Jesus pulled parables from the natural world to teach spiritual realities (the realities are connected by a common Maker); a well-rounded craftsman will have learned wisdom from his life experiences and it's wonderful to share that insight with others and help them break through sooner and easier than you did. It's so much deeper than just hammer & nails. Thanks for sharing with us, Scott.

I enjoyed this podcast. Obstacles....we all have them. I am now retired, but 8-10 years ago my ethics was formally questioned. My ethics had never been seriously challenged before, as I gave no one a reason to question them. I was raised by a good Christian mother and father that taught me daily to always do the right thing in my dealings with people My dad's saying was (paraphrasing) "you can't go wrong by doing the right thing". It was a very difficult 15 months to resolve the questions regarding my work, but I came through it well. I can say I spent countless hours and sleepless nights defending myself. When all the dust settled, my accuser wanted to be friends again. I was taught to forgive and forget, but I didn't honor that teaching and went "ballistic" on him to get my frustrations out. He got an earful from me, and honestly I felt better. I would never ever work with that man again, but today my general and absolute dislike for him has waned substantially. I am glad for that.

Really enjoyed this podcast, gents. For me personally, the bottom line almost always comes back to mental toughness. Not listening to the negative stories my mind wants to tell me. Understanding that yes, sometimes I have to hit that extra gear to finish a job. Ignore the elements, ignore the chatter, ignore your sore muscles and hunger and just, by God, get it done. Also knowing your limitations is important. Don't get in over your head. Stop and think for a minute before you make a confusing situation worse. Ask for help when you need it. You all said it best in previous podcast....."slow is smooth, smooth is fast." If nothing else, don't make more obstacles for yourself. A BIG thumbs up for both of you!

Important point about asking for help, when you need it. Unfortunately that’s usually when our pride gets in the way. But you’ll have much greater success if you utilize ALL your resources and not handicap yourself with pride.

You can knock a man down but if he keeps getting up there is no stopping him. Obstacles can be broken, climbed, or gone around we just need to step back and take a good look at it. Lots a valuable nuggets in there! Love your [Nates] recollection of when you knew you were at a point in life where it was time to explore an alternate path. Chucking your books and all your study materials in the trash. The visual must have been kinda humorous for an onlooker but I doubt you were laughing much at the time. I bet at the same time, it must have been like unloading a heavy burden and somewhat liberating in a lot of ways. Obstacles and disappointments usually seem to take up about 50% of life. Fortunately the other half tends to be break throughs and triumphs. When you seem to be encountering more than your fair share of obstacles, the triumphs always seem to taste just that much sweeter.

If you think of a paint job inside a house, 70-80% of the work is prep(tape) and clean up(anything but painting). But once you've prepped enough, it becomes second nature where you don't have to think about it. IMO, ppl who overthink need to be shown/instructed/mentored...someone to set an example.
@keithcurrams

@@RickyBobby_USA That is such a great way of looking at it. I overthink to my detriment, so what I've started doing is taking small steps. Insignificant steps, little tiny pieces of prep here and there. Any small easily accomplishable part of the task I can do right now this second. Laying out the tools. Cutting something. Clearing a space to do the work in. Opening a project file. Drafting an email. Little bites out of the elephant.

Hey Nate! No problem in that CPA thing not working out. I fought that test four times and realized that I was a good accountant but I was even better in IT systems connectivity, process improvements and earned my master black belt in Lean Six Sigma . After spending 2 years as a working manager of a rigging company, I went into the IT realm where I have done everything from being a systems administrator to supporting connectivity projects so systems can communicate with one another. Walking away from accounting was the best thing I could have done. But did I waste that knowledge? Not really because accounting is the foundation of business and I understand how everything that happens in a computer system and the processes used to enter data into or provide an output feed of data from the system impact the bottom line. The key here is to remember that God has a plan and our plans just not align with the overall scheme in the universe. My only gripe with myself is that I did not "fail faster" and move on into what I am doing now more quickly.

a word of caution when one is in ballistic mode. Do not lose situational awareness. In 2007 my brother was part owner in a civil engineering firm and contemplating a buyout to semi retire. Then the housing mortgage implosion hit (see The Big Short). In August 2008 he emailed saying he was going to "go ballistic" to get through this disaster. A firm in Tucson the same size as his folded. He said it could have easily been his firm. He was using his plane to keep himself in front of clients to keep the contracts alive and Ambien to sleep at night.(bad mix) In January 2009 my brother and a partner/fellow pilot were flying to Yuma to seal a big government deal they had worked on for over a year. It was a day they should have driven and not flown. Many signals came that it was not a day to fly VFR but confirmation bias prevailed and they took off. They soon lost situational awareness and flew into a cloud that had pine trees and limestone. Game over. At the end of the day it does matter that you come out the other side of the obstacle alive and with important relationships still intact. Scott, we are the same age and share many of the same skills. I greatly appreciate your content. Keep up the good work!

The problem with imagining what the WORST outcome would be, is that if you have an active imagination that very often makes it worse because you are able to conceive of and hold in thought some pretty devastating scenarios. I have to do the exact opposite and actively stop myself from running wild with the what-ifs, and try to ask instead "what's actually really likely to happen, and is THAT a biggy?"

Oh man, this reminds me of the recession of 1980. My first. Id been in the bags for about 6 years. It was early fall, as I recall. we got up on a Tuesday morning and the interest rate had jumped up to and unheard of 14%, Thursday up to 18%. The following week it made it to 20%. I think it topped at 21%. It was nuts for about 3-4 years. Fun fact: the talking heads all said: it was all necessary though tough on many people. Yeah right, recessions only count when white-collar are involved. :)

I agree with the part about failing at college. I did not finish my college degree in the field that I was anticipating to working but I learned a lot from the classes that I took, like humanities and philosophy. I was going for a printing degree which I think would be pretty useless to me with the way the world is now. But nonetheless it was a great experience to go through even though by most people's account it looks like a failure, but not to me

Quitting is one of the most satisfying and rewarding things there is. Most of the time it feels like more of an accomplishment than succeeding. Succeeding usually just feels like what's normal and what's expected. But to quit something that you're struggling with, that hangs over you, that follows you, that reminds you that you can't do it, to have it stop renting space in your head, is among the best feelings there is. To just say "Fuck it" and dump it, and move on. Bad job. Bad education. Bad marriage. Quitting is wonderful. All "quitting" really is, is deflating the importance you gave something in your own head, that you're already unhappy with. Perseverance has its place, but is no more virtuous than quitting. The right thing for the right time and place.

6:24 let me just say as a CPA licensed in Arizona, I actively now peruse KZitem for craftsmen: framers, concrete, HVAC you name it. I firmly believe that this thing whatever it is that our country is going to through is a struggle in which the white collar professionals (the expert minority) whom I know well tries to impose order upon the handymen/craftsmen/specialist blue collar majority. All of the research I have done indicates that it will be an unpleasant transition similar to the 1960's and I think we see that now like this week and at the end there will be a much more equalized economy in which people working with their hands are valued more. Anyway point is I think if anything someone like me may have wasted their time seeing the CPA exam through and might have been better off in the trades. I think the coming decade will show that.

Hey Mates, this is gold. Love it! If I may, and I say this because I know you boys want constructive criticism, I’d encourage the podcast to to be cut free, or unedited. Purely hit record and then post it. Bam. I fear that the question the watcher may ask him/herself is, “something said?” or “what don’t they want us hearing/seeing?” And I know you boys don’t want that. Also, I know you’re scrapped for time, but don’t fall into the stereotype that today’s audience wants short videos. I call bullshit. Rogan’s hit three hours and we all know how he’s doing with that; therefore, if these convos aren’t finished with due justice then don’t cut-’em short. PS that antler coming out from under the table and out of your hands, Nate, merely made me piss laughing so hard. “Keep your dick in a vice, or taco, I don’t judge” - AvE

The man doesn't need to be a saint. Any person for that matter. You don't even need to agree 100% on everything with someone else: you might not like what he says on certain subjects and still other issues addressed by him might be useful, relevant, and true. Nothing is black or white absolutes, we're all shades of grey.
