The sad part is companies like Big Idea and James Brand have done such a good job of marketing that they've turned the people they're ripping off into their loudest defenders. They've tapped into the lifestyle aspect making them seem legit while paying off creators to give them infomercials and selling at a price point high enough to make a consumer feel the need to justify and defend. They make mid tier products but they have a top tier understanding of psychological manipulation.

I agree Every Day Gary, There are tons of way over priced EDC items on the internet. People don't realize that just because it's the most expensive, doesn't always mean it's the best. If they have money to throw away and it makes them feel special having a high priced EDC item, then good for them. But I don't need expensive gear, just gear that works as it should.

Oh 100% yes! $100 ballpoint pens or a $175 Ultim fountain pen that has the same nib as a $30 pen? It's total insanity but they'll drive go-carts around the office laughing the checks to the bank I guess.

At Walmart, you can get a two-pack of Hart brand box cutters for 8 bucks, and they are VERY similar to the Big Idea box cutter. Love mine, been using them for a year or so. Lost a couple though, which is why I wouldn't spend $80 on something like that.

For a box cutter, I like having the $20 Milwaukee Fastback that has a bit driver. It's nothing special, besides it has a bit driver and utility knife. Mine has been used for outdoor mulch and rock with different side jobs and I was able to tighten up exterior screws I find that the home owners ask me to tighten. It's so nice that both are in my pocket. I have a set of double sided Wiha bits in a pocket tool pouch that I keep on me, so I rarely have to get another tool. I rarely don't leave home without my Knifeless Rebar as well. They both paid for each other more than 10 times, not having to go to my vehicle to get a tool or driving home to get the proper tool. Just in gas alone, I probably saved more than what both costed me. I agree with you though. I picked the Knifeless Rebar because I can go anywhere with it and it's nothing special. It doesn't have Titanium or special steel in it to drive up the price tag. Both tools have everything I need and since both can tighten a screw, I can tighten a double screw hose repair end or use the Rebar pliers to hold a nut and the Fastback for the screw. I even repaired my bicycle, when I went on a long bike ride and my coaster brake screw came loose. I have 1 free titanium clip that holds my car key to my belt and it's scratched up from use. I don't see why a aluminum or steel would be any different though. I just don't get why Titanium is any better. My friend has the Titanium Leatherman Charge and it's heavier than a Wave or Charge plus. It looks nice but he rarely carries more than a knife and it just sits on his dresser. I just don't get all this special material hype neither. I can understand wanting a knife with a G10 or Micarta scales, but special locks and expensive designs, I never got into. The most I spent on a knife was $50, and it was used so much when I was Semi driving, that I ended up giving it to a young guy that didn't have a knife to cut open to shrink wrapped pallets. I had another knife in my truck and that 1 was sharpened so much but it was maintained and that guy was excited to get it. I bought $40 and cheaper knives/multitools since, but Leatherman raised prices, so my next replacement Rebar will cost $80, if I lose mine. It used to be $40, I believe. 😞 It's still a basic design, with a 40 year warranty and I have warranty claimed my Knifeless Rebar twice, so it's definitely worth it. I got a new one the 2nd time, with the stupid new wire junk cutters. 😢

We agree very much on this Gary. Especially on "James Brand" and "Big Idea". They are SO overpriced. I can equal or exceed everything that they make for far less money. If I wanted to, which I don't. For years I've gotten by just fine with a Victorinox Manager, an EVO 14 and an Ontario Rat 2. I could buy 20 Rat 2's for the price of that James Brand knife. But I don't need to, because one Rat 2 will last me for the next couple of decades or more. And I won't fear putting it to hard use.

I saw some random, hideous red, shark shaped pry bar on ebay after clicking on a random seller's bad review. The reviewer was upset that the item came with a plain black lanyard instead of the red/black lanyard pictured, and didnt accept also the $30 discount for lack of original box packaging. The item was $695. That knife at least required a pipline of careful production of the steel, grind, edge and machining of titanium etc. This ugly pry bar bittle opener at $700 is insane. Also recently saw some Flytanium knife scales that were fine -- flytanium makes some beautiful scales called "lotus" for $80 -- these "playge x flytanium" scales were listed at like $1,100 ...

As long as there are gullible people in the world, who want to show off. The three things you showed, and I agree, I'd never buy any of them. But there are people who will, and as long as those people exist companies will make over priced crap. I carry a wallet, made out of nylon, I've had it for 15 plus years, and its still going strong. Keep up the good work.

A Bic pen writes the same as a Mont Blanc. A Timex tells the same time as a Rolex. A Bic lighter makes the same flame as a Dunhill. Yet each of the luxury items sell well, so obviously there is a market. It all depends on the customer, their taste and money. As for knives, I have many (some expensive) but a $30 Swiss Army Knife has served me best.

There's obviously a market for luxury products and in a lot of cases when buying something like a Rolex you are actually getting something for the money. The same could be said for something like the Chris Reeves Sabenza it's a luxury knife and it's made to be a luxury knife. While I wouldn't spend that much on a knife or watch in the case of Rolex I at least understand their price point. With Big Idea and James Brand you're paying a luxury price for a pretty mid tier product. They aren't using the best materials, they aren't bringing any real innovation to the market, and they aren't making anything close to a luxury product they just pay off influencers to get on their knees about the brands.

@@CanItAlready I think you missed my point. The “market” encompasses a range of values for items of identical utility. But as an aside, I don’t begrudge any seller their profits, no matter how obscene. It’s called “capitalism” and it beats the hell of the alternatives.

@@sadisticD Rolex is not a great example, not knocking their quality here but they're heavily overpriced. They utilize marketing, hype and forced scarcity, and vendors have no to little say on which models they get delivered. Breitling makes just as good watches for less than half the price, and you can get whatever you want, wherever and whenever, plus their watches are way better looking in my opinion.

Hey Gary, point of production - you should boost your audio. Either move the microphone closer to you or boost it in post production. You're way to quiet and aren't able to compete with other videos. I love your content, but as soon as I hear your audio, I tend to click away to another video because I know that as soon as you're done with your 5-7 minutes, if I've adjusted my audio to compensate for your poor audio quality, I'll be blasted with loudness if I'm not sitting there with remote in hand. Just food for thought. Feel free to disregard. Love your content, and will continue to watch.
