This is how corporations operate. Manipulation, Deceit, Disassociation and Fear are the four pillars many large businesses are built and balance upon. They tell you "we are all a Family" but they quietly, in a sub-paragraph, define what they mean by 'family' if that definition isn't outright hidden from view. They allow all sorts of rumors to be spread, even resorting to spreading a few of their own about where the business currently is and how its future propects are looking without every confirming a single one until backed into a corner and they do their best to never be backed into a corner. They are constantly making changes to the contracts of singular groups such as Logistics, or Quality or Front Line but these changes are NOT unilateral so they are playing the "Divide and Conguer" game getting the various hourly departments to be at odds with each other so they can continue to operate unobstructed. Any change to be made where the majority of the employees are supposed to appear to have a choice is made with a vote that will contain MORE than one item. In order to approve of the change the majority wants, they have to agree with all the changes posed and some will be just a single sentence that is the agenda the corporation really wants. They will, when nothing else works, resort to intimidation that layoffs are in the offing, future contracts are in jeopardy, and the future of the company is uncertain so that they need everyone to 'step up' and go the extra mile for the foreseable future. These problems evaporate when the deadline approaches if the corporation has succeeded in bullying enough employees to achieve whatever goals the company needed to address their lack of planning.

When I was a CNA at a nursing home, there was a lot of pressure to work overtime! I mean, I get it, and I don't envy the supervisor for her position, but she begged me to stay overtime once when I had just gotten back from being home sick and I did not want a relapse. And thankfully, when I did work overtime, I got paid accordingly. But that's not a place where you want to be asked to work overtime! On the flipside, my boss at a hospital I worked for as a lab courier had her moments where she ticked me off, being insensitive, but thankfully, she never pulled anything like this. She gave me a heads up like a week in advance or something one time when she would need me overtime for a week straight, so I had time to stock up on tv dinners. And I could count on one hand altogether how many times she had asked me to work overtime. The times she asked me on the spur of the moment, it was inclement weather and I had to stay overnight there anyway because of the heavy snow. So I would be there anyway. She was always fair about overtime and only asked me when she absolutely needed me. So I was happy to do it. Besides, there's no contest between just collecting specimens that were already drawn and entering them into the computer, and trying to take care of up to 18 residents, some of whom were very feisty!

Gotta share my fave story on this topic. By supervisor informed me that they wanted to have the crew work on saturday. I declined as i had a date planned with my girlfriend. He said they needed me to come in because the first aid worker had plans for the weekend and none of our others guys are licensed for first aid. I guess my girlfriend would understand me being the only one who can do the job and the overtime pay would be helpful. You're not getting overtime. Am I getting paid for first aid wage? No you're getting your usual pay. Okay, i guess I can do that since first aid is just manning the first aid station and taking care of issues. No, we need you to do your usual job as well. ..... ..... ..... So you want me to do an entire day of overtime for regular pay, at a rate $6 an hour lower than the guy who usually does the job, do my usual job on top of covering that guys job, be the only worker with no first aid available in case of injury, do all this because he has plans, and want me to cancel my plans to accomidate this? No thanks. You're going to keep all these guys from working tomorrow? No. You're going to keep all these guys from working tomorrow because you want me to give up my date, take increased job risk, and no pay benefit. All the workers were there to witness the entire exchange and were looking at my supervisor like they were expecting him to fire me on the spot. Long story short, my girlfriend and I had a great day at butterfly world and a lovely dinner together.

We had a great curriculum director, who really did her job well. When a new superintendent came on the scene, she did away with this practice, and fired the curriculum director. Then she asked the teachers to 'volunteer' their time after school to work on this committee. Her reasoning was, they had to cut the school budget, and were hoping teachers would be 'team players', and do it for free! The teachers said, "Nope!" Suddenly, money was found to pay them!

Always hated when companies did this crap. I would work over to get the job done only to be into my 3-4hr of an 8hr shift friday and told to leave early as to not go over. So essentially on the days i stayed over, id screw my personal life free time to help them out. Only when it benefits them but not you. As of this year so much ppl call out, i told my store manager and operations manager. Wouldnt it be nice if someone "Me" who is dependable show up for the shift? But ill only takevthe shift if you dont try and take or cut my earned O.T by weeks end. Agreed... that O.T looks real nice on payday!

Thank god my company doesn't do this they are the most flexible i have ever seen a company. Small business and family owned. Casual dress anytime, no OT required, can take off time when you want , flexible with doctors appointments or any other family matters, can leave early come in later as long as you let your department manager know. We aee absolutely spoiled. Not to mention great pay and benefits!!

This is the kind and nice way to say no, me I just give them the cold hard facts. My time away from the job is more valuable then over time pay, shame some of my co workers got used like slave labor by an inability to say no.

I listened to the whole thing, and I paid particular attention to when overtime pay was mentioned. I am entirely in support of working for overtime pay, and if overtime isn't available, then it’s crystal-clear to me that overtime work is not something about which the manager seriously needs to keep talking to the employee. (Hey, it’s obvious to ME.) 😁

The "we all need to pitch in a little more"........ how about fair wages so people ACTUALLY want to work and then you don't have the problem of not meeting deadlines? How about seeing it for what it is: companies only work because the lowest rung of the hierarchical ladder produces the end product companies sell to actually make a profit? What happens if you have no more floor-workers? Are the CEOs gonna do the dirty work themselves?

@@samellison4452trust me I feel the same way. But you can have degrees, or even everything it takes to fulfill a promotion. But if you haven’t done the grind with the team, you’ll get no credibility. Hence you will more than likely stay right in your spot. It’s just the way it is. In a review, they will tell you “Thank you for being super flexible, you are truly a team player”.

Plenty of people have done free work only to be passed for a promotion and offered just a measly 3% annual raise because a higher amount "is not in the budget." Promotions are not guaranteed. In the meantime, there are many people, especially post pandemic, that have switched jobs and gotten promotions and much bigger salary increases.

Weve been told to only work our shift. If it goes over were supposed to take a longer lunch. Not even leave early! I asked if i should apologize to a customer and call a manager when my end of shift alarms go off so they can take over. Granted, they can't do my job. Only one other person in the store comes close. No, no, no! Stay and just cut the next day! Im hoping the last day of the week involves a customer at 30 minutes before shift end so i can call the manager and let them know im leaving on time as i had been instructed to do. Im tired of their snift. Thirty minutes equates to $10 in my case. Go after those who are hiding and staying late.
