I just started watching The Sopranos and I’m having a hard time taking that show seriously when the villain for the first two seasons is his manipulative mother. It’s also hard to get into that show when most of the characters have no redeeming qualities outside of saying “AYYY!!!” Or “Gabbagool”. It’s also hard trying to get into that show when most of Tony’s goons and the FBI act like they just started their day jobs. Tony shooting and killing people and he’s still walking free and it took the FBI until season 3 to finally get a wife in Tony’s house.
@mbriancohen
3 жыл бұрын
@@steverogers7601 I think you are short-changing it. Sops doesn't have the large message that Wire does, but the characters are every bit as complex and multi-dimensional. Saying Livia was the villain of Sopranos when Tony had to deal with hits and FBI informants is a little flippant. I think a big part of the problem you're having is that I don't think the mob portrayed in Sopranos is nowhere near as powerful as the mob of the 90s was. And, partly, the point that whites can afford to be more blatant in their crimes while blacks have to be more clever is a theme in The Wire: see season 2.

To those not understanding why Marlo didn't take the ring from Micheal. Because the ring was just a ring, him taking it from Andre not because he 'wanted a ring,' but as a show of his dominance, same reason he stole candy. When he sees Micheal has it, he thinks this guy was able to get the ring from Omar (or so he thinks). And he can see he has something more valuable than the ring, he has Micheal.

Based on this scene, I'd say it makes Marlo respect Michael more than he already did, based on the look of understanding that passes between him and Chris. When you think about it, none of these exchanges are really about the ring itself, they're about power and status within this society. Marlo may have said he's "not much for sentiment", but I don't think cared about taking the ring as part of what he was owed, especially since he uses coded language to coerce fat-face rick into giving him the ring (is that who that is? it's been a while). He doesn't say "give me the ring, that'll pay down your debt some", he implies, "I have power over you, I'm stronger than you, give me the ring". Then you have Omar taking it; Marlo doesn't really look like he's afraid of getting shot, and I doubt he cares that much about losing the money, since he has so much already; he just doesn't like being weak. With Walker it's also not really about the ring itself, by then we already know him as a violent bully who loves abusing his position of authority. By taking it, he's affirming "i'm better than these criminals; I have power over them". I think this also explains why Namond reacts the way he does, and illustrates the key difference between him and Mike: Namond is playing at being a tough, ruthless corner boy/thug, but Mike actually is. Namond was happy to harmlessly toss paint on Walker from behind a mask, but wouldn't try to assert his own power/influence, since he doesn't have much; it's his father's name that's gotten him where he is. For Mike, though, it would be crazy NOT to take the ring, since the exchange to him wasn't about a simple prank, it was about power, telling walker: "you can fuck with us and break our fingers, and THINK you have power, but these are our streets, and you don't. Weird, that kinda turned into an english paper before I realized it. Hope someone enjoys reading this at least. - u/MazzyStarsoftheLid's comment from Reddit

Solid explanation IMO... It was cut short above, but Michael also asked Marlo if he wanted the ring - to which Marlo replied "nah, you keep it"... It was a great move by Michael as he gained respect two-fold here by first having that ring, to begin with, then by offering it to Marlo, the Boss, because he liked it (Michael showing Marlo respect, but not out of fear)... Marlo deserves some respect too considering he didn't want the ring that way and believed Michael was now the true owner of that ring based on your above explination.

I think the ring symbolizes the gift and curse of Power. Its shows how quickly power is gained and lost not only in the streets, but in life. More importantly, everybody's reign is only temporary. Whoever has the power becomes a target for someone else who wants it.

Marlo is an interesting case. He does so much to protect his ego (ex: killing the security guard after losing the poker game) that his interactions with Mike leave you with a couple different interpretations (ex: refusing the money, letting him keep the ring)

Agreed! I thought that scene was cold AF with regard to Marlo turning down the ring in that now he's the "Brutha' that got his sh*t took" and in his head the law of the street applies to him too "if you can take it from me then it is yours" (a weird kind of a pride thing)
@ericm9411

@@ShiddyKong I love how in their first interaction, michael wouldn’t take his money and Marlo calls him a punk for it. Michael stares him down and Marlo calls him “shorty” and says there’s no problem. then the ring scene comes up and Marlo sees the ring Omar stole from him, asks Mike where he got it from, and Mike just says “I took it from a nigga. why u want it?”. Marlo, again, says “nah you keep it shorty”. Definitely got his ego put in check both times
