Don't mean to be rude but those are little Rock Crab you caught and I know their legal in Cali, but where I live in Washington State Red Rock Crab has to be 5" and Dungeness 6-1/4" males only. Just wondering if Pacific Pier is the only pier in the Bay Area to catch crab? So many of these crab videos I watch on You tube in the bay area seems to be that Pacific Pier location.

its only illegal for COMMERCIAL fisherman to keep female Dungeness. A recreational angler can keep females though generally, we throw them back if they have eggs on them.

If the claws come off when the crabs are being boiled the meat will oftentimes get waterlogged which makes the meat not very good. Try steaming them next time, when crabs are steamed the entire body stays intact which locks in the crabs natural juices and the meat is firmer and sweeter. Also, spider crabs don't have a size limit, at least not here in southern CA. They are kind of a pain in the ass as they need to be scrubbed really well with a brush under running water before cooking and a hammer is required to break the claws but its worth it for their meat is even sweeter than the rock crabs.

That was the first one that I heard of that was caught on the Pier. Possibly the guys who go out on boats could tell you something different, but I swing by the Pier all the time and have lived down the street from it for years, so I know that it is an unusual occurrence in this particular spot.

First crack open the shell and separate the claws and legs, rinse well. Then crack the hard the legs and claws for easy cooking. Place it on a plate and into a steamer. Once it is done, let it cool and eat. No more post cooking cleaning and it already cracked.

Do u no how crabbings been on the small pier at halfmoon bay? Planning on taking my kids out ther soon for fishing n crabbing
@PacificaFisherman
6 жыл бұрын
They usually catch smaller ones off the small pier, and the water on the small pier is inside the harbor (Pillar Point Harbor)so it doesn't get the circulation that the water on the outer side of the jetties gets. the water, of course, being cleaner on the ocean side of the jetties. I don't go there much, but have heard from reliable sources that if you are going for Rock Crab (Dungeness are out of season right now), that you have better luck on the north jetty, i.e. the jetty closer to Mavericks. Here's the Internet page for the Pillar Point Harbor from the Tides4Fishing network. You might check on this as well before going. tides4fishing.com/us/california/pillar-point-harbor

Oh, but if you are taking small kids, then you want to stay off the jetties. Yes, by all means, take smaller kids to the small pier inside the harbor for safety reasons. The jetties can be dangerous, and if a sneaker wave comes, a small kid can easily end up in the ocean.

On minute 8:50, the crab had white spots on the back, can anyone tell me what are those? ,and would it be safe to eat crab that has a lot of those white things on their back or claws?
@PacificaFisherman

I think they were barnacles, and they will not affect the meat inside the body. Actually, the way I have been preparing and cooking them lately, I remove the telum, then remove the shell, clean all the slime off the top of where the sets of legs come together and crack it in half and drop the two legs sets into the boiling water. So the top shell would not ever go in the water anyway. It also lowers the possibility of consuming domoic acid, as most of it resides in the shell in the crab butter. I just get rid of that, and then it keeps from turning the water yellow and foamy and boiling over the top of your pot as well. I know some people really love the crab butter, but I don't eat it due to the risk it poses (domoic acid). And if you don't care for the taste of the crab butter, it is better to cook it this way as it will make its way into the water and affect the taste of the white meat.

rock crab is great. I travel up to SF from Socal every month just to catch rock crab. They're reliable and I always get my limit of 35. Dungeness? whatever...too hard to catch. If I get 1 or 2, great, if not, I got my rock crab :)

Awesome. The Rock Crab look like Popeye when you compare them with the Dungeness. The tastiest way I had them this weekend, was when I cooked a bowl of old fashioned Campbell's Tomato soup and let the Rock Crab simmer in the tomato soup pot on low for about 15 mins. Wow, that was good.

Yeah, it was great! I haven't had that Campbells soup for quite a few years, but got the idea and picked up a can at Safeway when I caught the crab and decided to eat it. I'll have to learn to make my own Cioppino some day, but as a fast meal, that Campbells was pretty good.

if you like simple recipes, here's a cool hack. People go to restaurants where you get your hands dirty and wear a bib to eat crab or crayfish such as Boiling Crab and all the other clones. You can go there and order a corn on the cob for not more than $1.50. You get a bag of sauce with the corn so you remove the corn, wash a crab, put the crab in the bag, and put the bag in boiling water. The crab is cooked inside the bag with the sauce, and doesn't make contact with the boiling water. try it!

Hey Dandy Dan Pacifica Fisherman. What's up? You seem to be attracting an evermore colorful assortment of fishing friends. Is that the new crab pot you recently purchased? It's a really good looking piece of equipment. The fishing pole that you were using looked pretty spiffy also, though I was not quite sure what you were using it for. All in all it appears to me that crabbing can be pretty labor intensive, particularly in view of the fact that you have to throw an awful lot of your catch back from where they came from. I really have to commend you for your scrupulous attention to the rules as they relate to the size of your catch. I have never known to flout the rules although I am sure you might be tempted if it's only off by just a hair. You are a fine example of an individual committed to first rate stewardship of the ecological system. I am wondering since I have never seen you out after dark when you are fishing if crabbing is better at night. I'm sure I have chewed enough fat, so I am not going to overwrite my welcome. I will however, wish you a happy easter holiday and continued good fun and good fishing.

Thanks. I have more videos coming soon on crabbing, and these were both done in the light of day. One video from yesterday evening, Friday, and then another from today (Saturday). In this video you will see more fully what I do with the fishing pole to catch crabs. It is called Crab Snaring and I do a lot more with full image shots from a tripod on this one, so it should be easier to understand more fully what I am doing. The crab pot. Yes, when I went back and looked at the video of the new crab pot myself, it did look like some glow in the dark blue alien drone from another planet, and I also realized that it does in indeed have a stylish look to it. You are right, It is very labor intensive, Today I came home with 9 crabs (Yeah . . . it was a good day!) and I am worn out. I did them all this time on crab snare (no crab pot). Happy Easter to you Lorraine, and thanks for the uplifting messages.

@PacificaFisherman

Most of the street parking in that neighborhood is not limited, except for the loading zone parking just to the north of the pier. And the parking in the lot where they hold the City Hall meetings is also not limited, except for their are some reserved spots up front that have signs which state when you cannot park in those reserved spots (Mondays when they have the City meetings). Update (by edit): Mon, Oct 8 7:30 PM I was driving by that parking lot tonight, and could tell they were having another town hall meeting (or whatever they call them), and the parking lot was full. As I am driving past the parking lot on Beach street, down near the end of the lot (far away from those "no parking on Monday" signs) I saw a policeman issuing a ticket to a vehicle that was parked in that lot. I saw him put it on the window, and there was not a "no parking" sign anywhere near that car . . . so perhaps one of us needs to call City Hall and find out if the "No Parking" signs refer to just those 4 or 5 spaces up front where the signs are all posted, or if there is perhaps another sign somewhere in that lot that prohibits parking on Mondays after a certain hour for all vehicles. It wouldn't make sense, because there is a good chance whoever was parked there, parked there because they were going to the meeting or the pier. But now I am curious, and I didn't want to give you bad information after I saw that ticket being issued tonight. I'll try to make the call sometime.
