Pah-Lak (Tibetan for “Father”) is an English play based on intensive research - it is an examination the future of non-violence. The play focuses on the role of Buddhism in the lives of Tibetans and the dichotomy of the resistance movement that has emerged from decades of oppression, discrimination and marginalisation. Indian theatre director and playwright Abhishek Majumdar developed the play through rigorous research in Tibet and in collaboration with the Tibetan community in exile. The Play premiered on 3rd April 2019 at Royal Court Theatre, London with support from Reimagine India, Arts Council England. In 2022 the Tibetan director and head of “Tibet Theatre” Lhakpa Tsering and German theatre director Harry Fuhrmann in collaboration with Abhishek, have realised a new “Pah-Lak” production, translated to Tibetan language, with Tibetan actors and musicians.
The India premiere was held in Mcleod Ganj, Daramsala on 1st October 2022. The play then toured through North and South India. On 9th May 2023, the European premiere took place at the Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen. A two-month European tour was organised in cooperation with the Tibet Initiative Germany and the Swiss-Tibetan Friendship Association. In total, the new production was performed over 40 times in 24 cities. In this documentary film you can see the development of the new production.
