About two years ago I took a long drive around the Grand Mesa area in Colorado with a vintage Yashica Mat 124g film camera (instead of my plein air kit 😎). I was looking for old storefronts to photograph. Driving north on Hwy 50 just as you enter Delta, I saw this old abandoned drive-in Dairy King. Drive-in restaurants were more common in my childhood so the nostalgia factor was running high in my heart when I saw it.
I had to stop and examine this old Dairy King. I felt sure it had a story to tell. Who owned it? Was it a family run business? Was it a destination for a young couple’s first date? I knew then that I would one day try to paint it. I just had to learn how to paint good enough to do it justice. Two years later I felt confident enough to try.
The result is this 36x48" oil painting titled: "Soft Server Flavors at the Dairy King, Delta, Colorado."
