So I have been a Panthers fan from literally before day one, and probably have attended 2-3 games a year at BoA stadium and continue to live in the Charlotte area. So I think I have some informed takes on this: - I totally disagree that BoA is "obsolete". It's only about 25 years old, has been well-maintained, several renovations have taken place over the years, the location in Uptown (don't call it downtown!) Charlotte is a good one especially with great views of the rapidly growing skyline. D.G. calls it "boring", but actually the seating is pretty idea for football. I've never heard any Panthers fans at all complain that a new stadium is needed. I will add that perhaps my personal complaint is that the lack of a roof or any sort of overhang results in some uncomfortable experiences with the heat during early-season 1PM games especially in the upper deck that faces the sun. I guess the trade-off, however, is that late season games don't get very cold. It's also kind of unfortunate that with Charlotte FC's arrival they switched over from natural grass to artificial turf, but I do understand why. - That said, David Tepper's primary motivation for wanting a new stadium is that he wants a roof, as he seems to be very interested in the ability to host basketball games, more concerts, etc. so DG is correct there. - The expiration of the deal with the city is a bit more complicated than what DG presents here. The stadium is actually owned by the Panthers as it was built privately with PSL's back in the 90s. So it's not really the expiration of a lease. IIRC, the agreement that the team would remain in the stadium until 2023 was part of an agreement between the city and former owner Jerry Richardson as a condition for the city to be willing to contribute to renovation costs. - So if Tepper were to relocate the team, he'd still have a stadium on his hands to deal with. I believe that in this case part of the agreement was that the city has the option to purchase it a "fair market value", however that is determined. - Ultimately, I believe DG is correct that the chances of the Panthers moving are pretty slim. Charlotte is a very fast growing city with a lot of money and seem to have solid fan support, even last year with a pretty bad team they averaged about 71,000 fans per game. I think Tepper and the city will be able to come to an agreement on a new stadium without much trouble, especially since he's got a ton of money and may not need to rely on city funding as much as situations in other NFL cities have. It's also worth noting that in addition to the Panthers and Charlotte FC, the stadium annually hosts the ACC Championship game, the Duke's Mayo Bowl, and quite often at least one early-season college game.

My guess is the Panthers sign a short-term extension of the lease while they and the city try to come up with a deal. I doubt Austin is an option as the Texans and Cowboys would in all likelihood not allow it and other owners would agree as they wouldn't want another team intruding on their territories either. I don't think sports teams really bring anything to a city, other than to make people feel good. Lost a hockey team in the 90's. It was going to be all doom and gloom, people were going to leave the city, business's were going to shut down and all that. People didn't leave, pop actually got bigger. More business's started up, cause people spent the money somewhere else besides sports. The city actually brought in more revenue, cause they didn't have to worry about breaks and incentives to keep a team around. Now having said that, I'm glad my team came back cause it helps pass the boredom when you don't have a major team.
