This week was exciting for state lawyers and their support staff as the biggest announcement of improved work terms and conditions of employment was announced by the Minister for Justice and Attorney General Pila Niningi.
But with it came challenges from the government. Everything comes with conditions and the ultimate ones being not to compromise corruption. It called for highest display in their code of conduct when discharging their duties.
Mr Niningi, a faithful member within the James Marape government had to highlight his experiences to stress his points
He said during the famous political impasse of 2011 between Honorable Peter O’Neill and late Sir Michael Somare, the late Jamie Maxtone Graham approached him to give legal advice. He declined.
Mr Niningi went to share that he was Chairman of the Land Board and never has he acquired land corruptly for himself, friends and relatives.
His another interesting story was when he was executive chairman of Telikom and the world was crossing into the new millennium with the fear of Y2K bug and computers would stop recognizing year 2000 and beyond. Mr Niningi managed a K200 million funding for this. He said he never misused the money and when late Leo Hannett from Bougainville took over from him. He gave the vehicle and a side arm pistol to Mr Hannett. He unfortunately declined to get the pistol as it was registered under Pila Niningi.
When Mr Niningi was appointed the acting provincial administrator for Southern Highlands he said he realized the system was vulnerable to abuse.
" I had no interest in taking advantage," he said.
He said many do not do that. Mr Niningi challenged state lawyers avoid corrupt practices describing them as walking through the front door and out the back door.
