man, the olympic trial stories are heartbreaking. First the one about the two friends having to square off for a spot on the swim team, and now this. Brutal for the runner.

Is it brutal? If a 7th-place runner fell down, would it be news? Unless a runner intentionally interferes with Athing's path, i.e. trips her, then she's responsible for staying balanced and running to come in 1st thru 3rd. It's pretty fair for all competitors. Any "re-do" like PTI is mentioning is ridiculous. And a "special exemption" after running the race is a slap in the face of the other competitors who kept their balance and ran their hearts out. I feel sorry for her, but not too sorry.

@@machtnichtsseimann I wasn't suggesting a "re-do". I was just saying. And no, it wouldn't be news if a 7th place runner fell down. I don't know track and field very well, but it's suggested here that she was a heavy favorite to qualify. And to me, it seems the mistake she would be rare or uncommon, so... yes, brutal. A runner who was a long shot to win in the first place falls... not as brutal.

@@joeseddit - I wasn't implying you were, I was thinking it out here in the Comments. My idealism plays out where hopefully we would ALSO believe it to be as brutal for the 7th place finisher. Why wouldn't it be? They trained just as hard ( maybe harder ) than the favorite, their dreams are deep and profound, yet we dismiss them, because we almost worship the favorite? THAT seems quite brutal, how we treat the 7th place finisher. In the true Spirit of Sport / the Olympics, we could be much more sympathetic to the lesser-knowns. Reality tells me that it is America, we worship our stars, so I get it. Yes, she was the favorite, or definitely to qualify. I still feel bad for her WHILE feeling good for the women that competed fair and square and didn't fall. ( Not sure why it's brutal to lose, actually. It's a given possibility every time an athlete competes. Human error, mental lapses, technique is off. The NHL's best goalie had some bad games recently in the Finals. Stuff happens. Rory missed some putts. Very disappointing. Maybe society could do a MUCH better job helping our athletes to not live in shame, but encourage them to go on with a strong, positive attitude. Sorry, so long. I played sports and can see this from both sides, competitor and spectator. )

@@machtnichtsseimann Well again, maybe I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that falling during a race is a rare ocurrance. Had she not fallen and still lost, not so brutal. I also found it brutal, or sad may be a better term, when the two friends had to swim against each other for the last spot. So no, it's not really brutal to lose, but to lose in that fashion seems brutal to me. And as far as I'm concerned, that's good. That's what's great about sports. Reflects and prepares for life. It's supposed to be brutal at times. And apparently so is life because it's been that way since the beginning of time. I appreciate your comment but respectfully have to say that that's your idealism, not mine. I find your position too soft. I don't feel it's America or society's job to coddle the loser. If the loser wants to become a winner, he/she must learn to go on with a strong, positive attitude regardless of the outside noise just like any successful person had to do at some point along the line. I'm not a fan of this "everybody gets a trophy era". What's the point in even competing or keeping score?

@@joeseddit - My previous comment: "Maybe society could do a MUCH better job helping our athletes to not live in shame, but encourage them to go on with a strong, positive attitude." You agree with having the same attitude. Where did you get the idea or impression that I am being SOFT here!? LoL. If anything, I've stuck to my position to NOT coddle Athing Mu in her failure. If you find my extending common human empathy for her in her pain as "soft", then we disagree on that. Simple empathy is not coddling. ( And I don't support in any way kissing her backside and worshiping her. ) I'm not into being cold towards competitors who, as in this case, fell during their race. They worked for years to compete for The Olympics, and now? Agony of Defeat. It's good and human to acknowledge their pain briefly THEN focus on celebrating the victors! We can walk and chew gum at the same time. And I absolutely AGREE with you on participation trophies. That is where Society went soft and forgot some of what Sport is about. Goals, striving to win, accomplishment. Competition, done right, is a great thing. To hand out a trophy to everyone is a fundamental disrespect of Sport itself.
