4:31 "Les établissements privés sous contrat" (private establishments under (public) contract) are private school that get subventions to pay, for example, the professors who are civil servants. They are, on principle, identical to public school on the learning aspect but can change on everything else: food, furnitures, size of the library, extra-curricular activities (among which are potential religious cursus), etc... "Les établissements privés hors contrat" (private establishments without (public) contracts) are still obligated to teach the mandatory cursus, but can use their desired methodology, different from the public one, for that. And professors are not civil servants, hence why it is more expensive. Also, scholarship students can only go in public schools or private schools under contract. 8:12 homeschooling isn't illegal per say in France, but it functionally is except in very specific circumstances: heavily handicapped kids, kids with major health issues, kids who are professional or semi-professionnal athletes and need to have their schedules adapted individually, kids from nomadic families for professional reasons.

"Français Langue Etrangère", would translate more as "French as Foreign Language". Literally. Your translation works too, though. Nurseries schools are highly regarded by single parents and married couples who wants to keep working full time. Some quit their jobe, take a sabbatical leave, switch to part time or even switch jobs to be able to raise their kids themselves for those first crucial years. Places are limited and private nursery school isn't affordable for most families.

I am Québécois and I learned a lot a lot about the French school system. Our system in Québec is totally different.

Thanks for the video. Very informative. How did you solve the hurdle of school registration for the visa application? Did you end up registering in private school?

My daughter did the British international section in a public school in Paris and you had to be bicultural! French kids without having lived abroad can not enter the section. She got accepted in many universities abroad and chose to study at McGill. She has graduated and works now in Canada as French speakers are very in demand.

Oh wow, that is interesting and helpful to hear. Thank you!! Congrats to your daughter, too. I've heard those programs are not easy and it sounds like she did well!

We are very grateful for the French school system, we paid zero for her education. We did pay a decent amount of social costs and taxes, but that's part of living in France.

Thanks for the information! If I recall from another video, you decided to take your daughter out of public school and move her to a private school. If I’m recalling correctly, was there a particular reason for the move? And what’s a realistic tuition range for private schools? Thanks!

Thank you for this helpful video! Im wondering, in your school selection, did you learn if you must attend the public school in your neighborhood or "district"? Or can you choose among multiple public schools in your city/commune?

The public school is selected by your district (la carte scolaire, the school map). Normally there is no possibility of choice (except to have another address).

We found private international schools had a lot of extra curricular activities the other schools didn't have.

Yes because they can afford it through the tuitions the parents pay. Public school offering free education do have limited budget and focus on academics. But then city town and region, government often offer discount to practice extra activities in sports, music, art associations.

@@alaind276 Je confirme. Depuis Macron les critères d'autorisation sont très limités. Si ce n'est pas pour des raison médicales, il est difficile d'obtenir l'autorisation d'instruction dans la famille, en tout cas pour la maternelle.
