Love the way this guy interacts with his bird. Parents could take lessons from him on how to handle their children. Though this is going to anger a lot of traditionalists.

This helps with aggression but I'd like to know how to get a bird out of the cage, my bird is VERY territorial with the cage and idk how to undo that the last owner got sick and couldn't take care of him too easily so the bird started to rely on the cage, any advice?

Great observation! Smokey's nails are longer than usual and she did leave a mark on Dina's arm afterwards (not too bad). Her grip and nails usually do not do that. I handle her on a daily basis and her grip is usually not even noticeable.

What about when birds suddenly bite? My grey will be with me and then suddenly bite out of nowhere without any change in our surroundings. She'll even climb down my sleeve to get to my skin. I'm hyperaware and if I don't notice any potential triggers, it's unlikely to be anything environmental.

Hi, so my girlfriend has a Grey by the name of Dexter and I was able to pick him up without him biting me without any issues but we went away for 2 months and he bordered at a really good birs rescue here in south Africa amd when we came back he completely changed towards me, lunging to bite me. This was a really hormonal time for him but I was wondering what we could do after this exercise with him? I would love to perhaps send you a video so maybe you could help me if needs be or recommend the next step by referring me to the best video so I dont make it any worse in the future. Loved this exercise though and will try it this week

My parrot bites when I'm going to take it out of the cage, but once it's out of the cage it doesn't bite. Why is that??
@cindyandjoey
6 ай бұрын
When my new husband was first learning to handle my male Triton cockatoo, Joey, he was scared of that big beak. (This is the case with a lot of people!) I realized that many people don't understand how a parrot actually uses its beak. You parrot owners know that when a bird is climbing from one perch to another, it will often use its beak as a third appendage to steady itself while climbing. It will lean over, put its beak down first, and then step with its leg following. When people who are new to parrot interaction see that big parrot beak coming at their arm (as the bird attempts to step over onto it), they mistakenly think that the bird is going to bite their arm, so they pull their arm away---just as the bird goes to step onto it(!) and resulting in the bird falling or thinking it's going to fall! Then the bird gets mad and really DOES bite! (And you would deserve it!) Talk about a bad way to start out a trust relationship with a parrot! This would be like a new found friend you just made pulling the chair out from under you every time you go to sit down. Once I explained to my husband that Joey was just using his beak to steady himself, and to just trust in the "process" and hold his arm steady, everything was okay. Hubby was soooo proud when he could carry Joey around! And they became good pals. I mentioned Joey as his "best friend" in my hubby's obituary when he died young of a heart attack.

Would this work with pigeons? As I have two very aggressive pigeons at the moment. Its because they both don't like each other and have become highly territorial towards anyone and everything, one when on the ground will run to attack my feet.

Poppy Mason-Smith are you sure they don't like eachother? Sometimes mating behaviour can appear a little aggressive to us. And if it is mating behaviour, it's common for a pair of birds who were great with their owner before hand, to suddenly become more aggressive towrds you. I'm not a trainer, so I'm not pretending to know what's going on, but id say it's a possibility worth looking into. Ohh, and they don't have to be the same gender to see eachother as mates. It's rare, but same sex couples in the animal kingdom do happen.

Hey, I have been taking care of my brother's adult african grey for about 6 months and she generally never liked me but I want to cultivate a good relationship - she's been very territorial towards me even before my brother went away - but she's gotten somewhat worse and throws her food bowl in addition to throwing herself onto the floor and chasing me or even attacking my hair when I am cleaning under her perch cage. She has an open cage that is higher than my eye level and is around 20 years old - my family adopted her when she was 8 and she was originally my father's pet, then when he passed away my brother was the only person she liked so he took her. He has been away from her for just over a year it's been really tough for her so I just want to make her experience better by being someone she feels safe with me.

My bird just started biting me right when they land on me (like hard aggressive and sudden). Even if I have the nut ready and even if it’s completely optional for her to come to me. She lands and immediately chomps my fingers hard. I’m not sure what she is communicating. I thought she didn’t like the clicker (suddenly) so I stopped using it. But the behavior hasn’t stopped. I’m not sure what to do when she bites since it’s an optional activity

I am about to take on a 40 yr old female African Gray. I am a 55 yr old female. History on the African gray is she was with a man that passed away most of her life before my cousin took her. She then bonded with him. He stopped basically spending as much time with her and she had started plucking no feathers on her chest. They went out of town and I spent a week talking with her and getting as close as I can she will eat bananas out of my hand and takes it very gently. However I do know she is territorial over her cage. They're going to give me a different cage get her new toys. And as soon as I can get her to a vet. I listen to her when she's sleeping and I do hear a little bit of wheezing I don't know if that's normal. They have goats and they have the baby goats inside and I know that the chips put out a lot of dust. They have a purifier right next to the cage but just being 40 I'm curious if you have any tips? She has gotten onto my coat one time but unfortunately she started to get stuck.I had the wrong type of cloth on and put her in her cage immediately so she did try to come out to me one time. But being 40 do you think I have a chance of her bonding to me? If you think I'm going to cause her more stress and anxiety I'd rather keep her where she's at I don't want to do anything to hurt her

Territorial aggression is complex in that the bird's behavior depends a lot on what the bird considers his/hers. After many years, I rarely get bitten now but I have the scars to prove the difficulty of those early years.

I have a male cockatiel that gets very protective or terrestrial over new things, for example if I put a new toy in his cage he does not want me around it and he will literally just sit next to it and fluff up, other times he really likes things like plastic bags and he does the same exact thing. The really weird thing is when I take the object away he kind of wonders where it went for a second and then he is not aggressive at all anymore and kind of forgets and I can walk near him, pet him, have him step up and what not, but when the plastic bag is there he will not even let me come near him, like at all. Can someone help me with this, is it some kind of special bird psychological thing or a common problem, I do believe I have a good relationship with my bird so I just don’t know why this happens.

If we would try to practice like you show us here our bird would never sit still like that. He would most likely fly of to someones head or my hand. My husband gets bitten every time he tries to be with our bird. We work with rewards and with me he is ok, but with others he gets upset and A bit "agressive" in his behavior. Any ideas? Thanks for a great channel!

Malin Fasth birds don’t always WANT to interact with others they have to work on building trust and bonds with the bird time is the only thing that can really work and some birds will never want to be interacted with with anyone but their chosen person they can’t be forced that’s just a part of owning a bird that pair bonds sometimes.

As far as pellets go, you cannot go wrong with Harrisons Organic bird food, which is a very healthy pellet. They come in a variety of sizes for different birds, for a grey I would recommend Harrisons Adult Lifetime Coarse, but interchange to your grey's comfort. Another great option to include with pellets is called Roudybush California Blend, which includes healthy dried fruits, as well as pellets. This is what I feed my birds, and they all love it. It may take time to get your bird to switch to pellets, just take it slowly, and gradually ween them over.

Hello, I have a rescue bird since september and i did not do anything with him because he always bites and gives aggresive behaviour towards everyone in the house and he does not really like anyone. He is comfortable and talks and does tricks when we are outside the case but when we lay our hands on the cage he immediately bites and will not allow us to get near to him. We do not know his past and we do not know if he was tame before. How do we start? We have tried sticking a stick in the cage so he can step up but he does not understand and does not like it. He does sometimes let us feed him with our hands inside the cage but sometimes he just bites instead. It is hard to read him at that point. I hope you’ll respond since this is an old video.

Thanks for your insight on why a parrot will bite. We take ours for a walk outside several times a week. When he sees some people (like our very nice neighbors) even at a distance, he will immediately bite me -- hard enough to draw blood. So we look around before stepping outside, to make sure the coast is clear -- but that doesn't always work because he has such excellent eyesight that he sees the "threatening" person a block away, often before we see that person. Sigh . . .

Thank you so much! I have a Green Cheek and she's quite sweet with me (most of the time, unfortunately I got her from a store that while is better than pet stores, as they do hand feed the birds from baby's, once they get to an age where they can eat on their own and are weened then the are put in cages and basically never touched again, so my baby right now is still unused to hands and bites. We're working on it!) she is very much territorial when my brother try's to pet her, and will always bite him when he try's to pet her. I think we will try this method! She does seem to be a lot more calmed and less angry when she is in a new environment, but I never thought to use that as an advantage for taming! She's onl 6 months and like I said, despite what they told me at the pet store she was not properly handled. I still wish I had gone with my gut and had just gotten a bird from a breeder out of state (my dad talked me into just getting it from this place because it's easier), But I love my sassy Chihiro with all my heart!

Yesterday I binge watched for 4 hours many a second or third watch. Our CAG is 17 I had mentioned this in your previous aggression video. I read everything I could on Greys. I waited 3 years after deciding on getting a Grey to find the right breeder and a collection of information where I felt I could make this life time commitment . I talked to "experts" about Zuri's change toward me. He loved me and I was his person and then suddenly it all changed. I understand about the fear after a bad bite. I am struggling with getting over my fear. Yesterday I actually started feeding him through cage his favorite treat. That was a very big deal for me.He knows I am afraid of him and now I am thinking that is why he still wants to bite me. I am just going to need to get past this. I am grateful that he loves my husband so much though.Honestly I think he stills loves me or I would have given up.Al his words are in my voice. I at least have some new techniques to slowly work with that I think will build my confidence and rebuild a loving relationship. Giving a treat to him and him being receptive to the attention was a very big deal. One thing the vet explained to me was that he turned on me because he saw me as his mother since I had hand raised him. When he hit puberty he wanted a mate and gravitated to my husband since we both handled him but I was primary care giver. There was also a tumble he took after his first wing clip.(He learned to fly and has never had another wing clip-If I could take wing clip back I would). The attraction to my husband seems to be in agreement with what you said. Do you think after almost 13 years of not being able to handle him we can get to a situation where I can overcome my fear completely and handle him? Thanks so much for all these videos. I wish I would have had this resource years and years ago.

My umbrella cockatoo will chase and attack any person or animal that walks into my room. Even if someone stands to close to her locked cage she will try to grab the person's clothing as it to pull them into the cage. I'm safe because i'm her primary caretaker so she will let me get away with almost anything. However I have worked with her well enough that in a public setting she is a sweet, loving and friendly bird.

Id usually avoid answering a question I know so little about, but since it's been a bit of time and no one more experienced is chiming in, I figure I'll give it a go. I know there are a few mating behaviors that can be lessened to decrease the possessiveness. Some involve areas on your birds body that we wouldn't expect are typically reserved for mates, another is regurgitation (sexy right? :/ ) . Birdtricks has a couple of videos about this on their channel that ive found super helpful. They are reward based professional bird trainers and free fly trainers, so they know some good stuff. Typing in birdtricks hormones should land you in the right spot. Ohh, check out the playlists here too. I'm a new sub, so I'm not sure if there's a video for that on this channel yet or not.

I wanna get a parrot just like smokey. There's a place that breed them in Tucson, Arizona. How old do you recommend me to get one, when they are still need to be hand feed, or as soon as they start eating by themselves? Another question, I work 10 hours daily and there's nobody in the house, is that bad for a parrot. That's why I haven't get one yet... ricardopr54 ; I know this isn't what you want to hear, but birds require that you spend a lot of time with them it can lead to things like the bird not liking you and getting aggressive to the bird being self destructive and start plucking itself or even mutilation as being the worse , some people say well if I get two birds they can keep each other company ,and sometimes this is true, but then the bird will never bond with you as it will have a mate, and you now have two birds that will be a problem ,so please refrain if you don't have time , sorry but it's true 😕

praveen pinto in another couple of his videos hes said he's been using sunflower seeds. I'm assuming it's the same thing in this one, but I'm not sure. Another good trainer I watch uses pine nuts. If you're going to give either of these as treats, it's a good idea to exclude them from the food in his daily food bowl, an exception for foraging toys is fine though. These nuts and seeds eaten in high doses aren't great for birds. Totally fine for training treats though.

Do you think that it's a good thing to free fly with a pet parrot ??

I fully support those who free fly when they properly take the time to learn for themselves what is needed to prepare a bird for outdoor flight. I do not support those who simply take an untrained bird outside with the hopes that he/she will return because of mere trust. Free flight requires that the avian candidate be of utmost physical health and have already gained the necessary flight skills indoors to control themselves outdoors.

Thanks so much wings n paws for the video uploads, they are really educative and very objective. Please help me out: I have a 3 months old CAG I purchased recently. Anytime it sees me or hears my voice it makes this "quiiii" sound repeatedly and when I approach it gently it's increases the sound level, what exactly is going on?When I try to lean towards it to observe it puts its beak on my fingers or hand or toes and as though pushing it away or or stop them from moving but it doesn't bite. What does this also mean?I release it from the cage to have some time out, play with toys or navigatext the room, but when I perhaps walk out and return and it sees me, it begins the same "quiii" sound and puffs the feather and run toward me sometimes with spread wings like it's going to attack. What's the interpretation of this action.? Am I doing something wrong?, if so what do I do to curb the situation because I don't want it to build any unwanted behavior caused by my inactions, actions or ignorance that has to be undone later. Thank you once again and hope to hear from you soon.

Love your videos and Instagram photos, Smokey is such a sweet girl. I also have a cute african grey parrot girl that just arrived home (4 months ago) but she is older, she is about 25/27 years old, we have rescued her, she has spent all her life in a small cage, never leaving it, it was such a heart-breaker to see her that way, now she is free, with a big cage for the night and she can fly again in the day :) She got bonded to me and not my husband, but she still bites a little on me, never too much, it never made me bleed or something like that, she also bites our feet when she's on the floor and especially when are all in the kitchen (that's where her cage is for the night, for the day I put the cage in our living room although she is never inside for the day). We love her to pieces but I would love to get her out of bitting. Also, she comes from a very bad habit of eating peanuts and sunflower seeds on a daily basis and now I can't make anything with her and reward her with treats she doesn't want them, also the foraging I have done for her it doesn't work, she doesn't try to get the food out, she just wants to destroy the toy. Any tips ? Thank you so much for all your work. Oh yes I got to potty training her in a few months only, so this is great :) thanks for your tips on that too.

Know Thyself and you'll know the world hey, I'm no bird expert, but I do have a suggestion regarding the sunflower treats. My bird is a lot more receptive to treats that haven't been given to her for a while. Maybe if she's showing no interest in sunflower seeds, don't give them to her for a day and then try again the next day. If that doesn't work, give it a couple of days and then try again. I don't recommend feeding them to her as part of her meal because that many sunflower seeds won't be good for her, and they will lose their effectiveness as treats. I know I for one am much less excited about my favorite food if I have access to it whenever I want it. Good luck :)

My African Gray Bites me whether he's inside the cage outside the cage it doesn't matter. Last night I was laying on the floor he came up to me and bit me twice now I have two nice cuts on my hand. Someone gave them to me around 20 years ago. If he bites me one more time I'm having him euthanized

One month is a really small amount of time for an older rehomed bird, I have a 6 year old I've had for four months now and he is only just starting to bond enough with me to let me scratch his head and be more gentle and less fearful. I see this comment is a bit older so hopefully you've had success in building a good bond with your bird 😊

Year 1998 my father bought Yellow-collared Macaw she is now 22yo and she almost always tries to bite me and I havent done anything bad to her. Im not scared if she attacks me but I dont like to get bit. She always attacks me when my dad is around so does that mean she thinks im going to do something to my dad or something? She also attacks me if my dad isnt around. I need help cuz she has been attacking me for over 10 years.

While making sure someone isn't bitten is very important, it's equally important to be aware of the fact that you may very well be bitten. And if you own the bird, you will almost definitely get bitten, just remain as calm as possible and admonish the bird in usual fashion when responding to poor behavior. But, just keep the fact in your mind, you may very well get bitten even if you're just helping in training the bird.
