Nice video on composting pile. I am showing this to the kids as we are planning a compost bin, or maybe just a pile for next year to use in the garden and flowers.

Good job. I use the same type of fencing. A couple of tips that will help you: Use a lawn mower with a mulching blade to chop up the leaves and bag it at the same time. They will decompose much faster when chopped up. I also keep a piece of 1/2" x 5' rebar nearby and use it to poke holes deep into the compost from the top and across from the sides. I do this in between turnings, helping speed decomposition.

earlier this spring I had bagged some neighbors tall grass that was more like hay. Anyway when I unbagged it today I noticed it had started cooking inside the bags. I guess the only reason it didnt continue and maybe start a fire was because it wasnt turned and didnot get any oxygen. Just shows it doesnt take much to get this stuff started.

For anyone interested I mixed a 50# bag of rabbit pellet food in my pile and I find it to be a great initiator for the pile. After just 4 days I have turned my pile once and have a temp of 145F. Glad to see it cooking so well already.

I had a bit of a setback- I have two of these bins going and everything was ok then I had a heavy rain and the heat was lost on one bin while the other bin remained heated. Even after turning the cold bin and adding a lot of starbucks coffee grounds it would not reheat. So I had to get more rabbit pellets and I now try to keep bins covered with plastic especially if heavy rain is expected.

@jamesc426, That is what a neighbor said too. I head that grass will just clump up and not cook. I guess it is worth a try since my current compost pile is just a pile of dry leaves at the moment! lol

will it hurt to put popcorn tree leaves in it, even though it may contain popcorn tree seeds. I plan to go over the leaves with a mulching mower and catch the stuff in a bag before I put it in a compost pile. Will it hurt to use popcorn tree leaves, even with the seeds??

I've been collecting weeds that I pick from my garden and letting them really dry out in full summer sun. They've been doing this for about three/four weeks now and I was just wondering if it's considered a GREEN Or a BROWN group?????

Good start up vid for compost, but I do have one disagreement. Once you have your first layer of leaves dont mix the rabbit food thru the leaves as shown here, just concentrate it in the middle especially if you are doing this in cold winter weather . let the fire cook on inner portion of the pile, will stay hot longer.

Nice common sense video , too bad no replies for the many comments. In my area finding anyone who sells rabbit manure is like pulling teeth.. Seems like one of the many questions people have is how much water to add. But I know a compost pile will make even cold but the trick is getting it started hot composting and its not all that easy.

If you are going to buy rabbit food anyway, why not put the rabbit food through rabbits first then use their poo for compost? That way you get better compost & free meat if you've already spent the money.
@seigeengine
10 жыл бұрын
Well, for one, you're going to get less nitrogen in the poo than in the feed. Nitrogen is essential to synthesizing amino acids, meaning the rabbit uses the nitrogen. The rabbit growing in biomass, shedding hair, skin, etc. all means you're getting less nitrogen out than you put in. Now, I'm not bashing rabbit manure as a nitrogen source here, but there's disadvantages to your suggestion. And on top of that, some people just don't want to deal with rabbits.
