I've just seen this video. It confirms to me one of the reasons our driving standards are so poor these days. This test should have been an immediate fail in the first few minutes of the test. The applicant crossed the centreline to pass a parked truck and trailer unit while an oncoming car was approaching. There were vehicles parked on that vehicles side of the road that further narrowed the available space. They passed with less than 2 or 3 metres between them. That display of driving could have resulted in a charge of careless driving at the least. The correct technique is to stop until the oncoming lane is clear then pass. The Testing Officer made no attempt to prevent the applicant carrying out that hazardous manoeuvre nor did she comment on it. It was a pretty damning indictment of current testing standards. To put my comments in perspective, I was an MOT Traffic Officer and, as such a qualified Driver Testing Officer. We were trained to far higher standards than todays Testers. I was also one of the first civilian Testing Officers employed when Driver Testing was taken from the Police and privatised. I was also in that role when the new 3 part testing regime was introduced and we were responsible for developing test routes for the new full licence test. I could fill pages with the abject stupidity of the NZTA, formerly LTSA, the AA who took over the contract from Driver Testing NZ, and VTNZ. Suffice to say that commercial enterprises such as the above should not have been contracted to carry out duties where the customer is often wrong. They have a powerful interest in keeping their customers happy and the two roles should be mutually exclusive. Driver Testing should be a Government provided activity and be much more closely monitored.

Not arguing with you about the lane crossing at the beginning there as i have heard mentioned exactly what you have said however i have been taking driving lessons recently and that exact scenario occurred and the instructor said that as long as there is enough space to pass, indicating 3 flashes to show that you will be crossing the white line is perfectly acceptable, which he did. ideally he absolutely should have waited but just thought i would mention what i had been told recently

Seems like they stopped forcing applicants to turn right at the end of Katere Rd as their final horror to cross 4 lanes back to VTNZ

@facesandplacesNZ - just a quick question, did you drive there (to VTNZ to take the test) by yourself or were you with a supervisor? Thanks for uploading by the way, very informative!

By law, you are required to have a supervisor sitting next to you whenever you are driving.
