Sounds like, he's in a dark place, but he hates dragging his mother down with him who's constantly trying to help him. He wants her to be happy. It's also common for people with depression to push people away and seek isolation.

The video is misleading. The song is about his exwife whos voice you hear at end of the video. Justin told me this himself. A tortured soul like so many of us, but a great guy!

John Mobley Yes it’s about her, the video alone is misleading. He’s not going to tell his mom that his memories make a porno feel like home. I don’t know Justin’s mom but some men let or expect their mothers to be their crutch and therapist all their life, and she can be too involved in his relationships, the man who tells his mom about his problems and avoids the partner. Avoids conflict, it’s an addiction to dependence on people to save you and not yourself. Anyway yep it’s his ex think her name is Mamie?
@southerncross5360

Richard Nelson Maybe family but not your ex. He’s seen talking to his mom not his ex, so it’s his apology to his ex, he told his but not the ex. Those who expect parents or family to bail them out of conflict in life. People don’t fix or heal us that’s an inside job.

The music video for "Hate Me," directed by Kevin Kerslake, begins with Furstenfeld sitting on his bed holding an answering machine and playing the tape of his mother which can be heard at the beginning of the song. After the message stops playing, Furstenfeld begins to walk through the house, seeing memories of him and his mother - her talking to him as a young boy, taking Prom pictures, and finally attempting to wake him from a blackout - replay in different rooms. These scenes alternate with footage of Blue October singing the song in the house's attic. At the end of the video, Furstenfeld takes the answering machine to a cemetery and lays it on his mother's grave.[3] The video led many fans to believe that Jeremy and Justin's mother had died. Rokie is in fact alive, and she plays herself in the video. The fictional narrative about her dying was conceived by the music video director.

I’ve always interpreted the “make a Porno feel like home” part as if Justin was saying that his emotional distress has become so great that he has lost emotional connection to his memories, like most people feel towards pornography.

I follow this band. He actually wrote this song for a girl he was dating, he first wrote her a song called Calling You for her, and after they broke up, he wrote this song. He has such a great story in all his songs about his life. Fear is a great song, it's good to see him and the band in a much better place now.

That’s not right. This is about his mother. Which is why his mom is in the video. She put up with so much for him. And he wants her to hate him because he feels he deserves it.

@@zachabbott6899 Richard Glenn is actually correct. He wrote the song for an ex-girlfriend. I've been to Justin's Open Book Tour concerts where he talks about his songs and the meanings behind the lyrics. In the video, yes his mom is featured. That was the video director's idea to use his mother. But honestly the song can relate to anyone that has hurt someone and doesn't want them to hurt any longer.

Of all the songs that could have helped the band break through, it was "Hate Me," his open letter to an ex-lover who bore the brunt of his battle with addiction. Furstenfeld said the song's success felt like vindication. "I'm really proud of the fact that that song was the one," Furstenfeld said.

When I was younger I used to listen to this song over and over again. I had thoughts of suicidal hate. I thought about how much my pain was hurting my mom and I didn’t want that for her. I understood the words hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you and they hit home for me. Until you’ve been in a point of pure and utter depression to the point of hating your reflection in the mirror you don’t have a true appreciation for those words.
