A real bona fide Maestro of the guitar, R.I.P. 1944-2021

Crazy because I just heard of him last night and it’s like the player and teacher I’ve been needing all these years. I never really listened to jazz until recently . Now I’m obsessed . His spirit musta sent me in the right direction . 💪🧞♂️

There was a period of time where Pat Martino was the best guitarist in the world. I was so lucky to see him and Joey Defrancesco at the Toronto Jazz Fest. RIP to both of them.

I’ve been playing guitar around a decade, mostly rock and blues, recently I’ve delved deeply into the world of jazz and have become hooked on the genius of Coltrane, Joe Pass et all. Pat is my most recent discovery and I can’t believe It has taken this long to dig his style. His melodic ability, willingness to share his knowledge and above all limitless passion for music has inspired me greatly.

A few years back when Guitar Player magazine had fine print quotes from great guitarists at the bottom of some pages Pat Martino was quoted as saying "there is a global war going on between mediocrity and dedication" (I think that's a correct quote). I've never forgotten that and consequently I feel like I never practice enough. Now, I'm sure of it!
