Pat Upton was a friend of mine. Not only did he have a great voice and was able to hit those high notes in his later years but he would also stand behind the scenes and hit the high notes for the other singers that he travelled with that couldn't hit the high note. What a great guy he was and wow, how he loved his family. He was so very down to earth, just a wonderful home down country boy. I still miss him still today! RIP my friend and forever remembered in my heart!

R.I.P. Pat Upton (August 5, 1940 -- July 27, 2016). He died after "a long illness," according to media reports. He was a native of Geraldine, Alabama, and died there as well. He still had a terrific voice. I'm glad I found this video. I heard this song four days ago at the market. His group was called Spiral Starecase.

The Spiral Starecase was an American pop band, best known for its 1969 single "More Today Than Yesterday". Hailing from Sacramento, California, United States, the band was recognizable for its horns and lead singer/guitarist Pat Upton's voice. "More Today Than Yesterday" peaked at number #1 on April 23, 1969 on KHJ Boss Radio, at #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number #7 on the Cash Box Top 100. It is ranked as the 50th biggest U.S. hit of 1969. The group did record many songs for Columbia Records including several singles. None of those however could match the success of "More Today Than Yesterday", and the group disbanded approximately 18 months after the chart topping song was released. Poor management, squabbles over finances and a lawsuit also contributed to the original line-ups decision to call it quits.

So glad to be able to come here on YT and not just hear, but also see these great performances. RIP Pat . So glad that my preteen and teen years was the 70’s. We had so much fun listening and dancing to all that great music. There will never be another era of music like the 60’s-80’s. NEVER

That song has always been a favorite of mine, love belting the lyrics out when I hear it playing. When I read the date Pat Upton passed away, I nearly passed out. Its the day after my husband passed away...in the same year. Bob was also a musician-'a guitar player. This morning I found myself singing this song and then tonight I went to a local bar and after being there just 5 minutes, it plays on their satellite music system nearly knocking me off my bar stool. I told the bartender how special the song is to me. He is a young man who wasn't even borm when the song became popular yet he loves it also and said I should come to their karaoke tomorrow night and sing it. I just might do that.

More Today Than Yesterday is a classic that he left and will carry on thru time. I was 5 years old when that song came out but I heard it all my life. Now MY grandchild hears it and loves it.
