Chain Lightning and Fireball both appear OFTEN in the spell lists of monsters with Counterspell. The list of ways that the spell slot could be wasted just grows and grows, and that does make a good case for Dehydrate as a spell.

Aww shucks, not only do I get a shout-out, but it's on a video about one of my favourite slept-on spells! You know me too well AAA. One thing that wasn't brought up is that when targeting plant and water creatures, the save result is one degree worse than what they roll. This means they can never crit succeed, a success becomes a failure, and a failure becomes a crit failure. It's like inverse incap! I actually realized this by complete accident while testing an encounter with some plant creatures. One of the test PCs I used was a pyromancer build. While I figured it would do well, I didn't even realize the rider effect until I grokked the spell. It ended up carrying the party through the encounter; when you have so much added weakness triggering and enfeebled reducing hit chances and damage, your TTK and overall survivability goes up immeasurably. Spells and effects that drop success results automatically are super slept on. It's situational a lot of the time, but that's the whole point of spell prep; you do you research, play smart, and get rewarded with more powerful and consistent results.

I really like your videos. So much content is just reading the books to us. I can read. I have been thinking Dehydrate was an uderappreciated spell. It is nice to see the math. Also, Congratulations! You channel is amazing and I look forward to more content. I was wondering if you were planning a video on mutagens? I read so much about people discussing how the cost does not outweigh the benefits, but I keep asking myself, what about rank 3 and higher? No one has done the cost/benefit of higher level mutagens and the effects on your stats. At least that I have seen. Thank you again.

BRB my Mosquito Witch is running to the scroll store to feed her familiar Dehydrate EDIT: One other thing about dehyrdate that makes it pretty good is that its a damaging spell that holds value at lower slots, as it both has a debuff attached (enfeebled) but because persistent damage will trigger weaknesses, meaning that even lower level dehydrates will do pretty good damage against enemies weak to fire.

more formulas please! i like also a quick comment about your visuals, no need to feel pressured: - you show a lot of stuff on a bright background and black letters, so maybe you could show the archives in a similar colorpalete - when showing the aon entries would be nice to use your whole screen, not just the bottom half-ish , so zooming in more and maybe disabling webcam (also use html formating to have the entry be the dimensions on the screen), a good guideline is the size of the other text you show - maybe you could use a clean latex style of presentation with some whiteboard aesthetics or use pathfinders iconic fonts and style? - also the art you use at the front and back of your vids, could be cash money if you include the artist name or maybe use an ai tool to make the dark magic around them move a bit for "uuh scray" vibes

The thing about dehydrated is it really shows its worth late game when its at higher level. Its a terrible level 1 spell because of how low the hp of enemies are and people dont look at low level spells later.

I notice that you often say that PF2E's optimization is highly dependent on party comp/cooperation. Could you make a video on how to "set the stage" as a DM that pathfinder is a cooperative game and what kind of conversations to have with your party members at the beginning of a campaign? Great video btw, keep it up!!!!

Also worth noting that it's almost never a good idea to run fireball if a PC is caught in the area, but Dehydrate would actually be pretty easy to remediate if a player got hit, since parties are generally decent at recovering

Honestly in my opinion even in the realm of just “it does damage”, fireball is massively overrated. Cave Fangs is my go-to choice for the most part. Range is worse, but same damage and a damage type that’s proooobably(?) better, and also leaves difficult terrain. Dehydrate is a huge spell though, I definitely overlooked it, it definitely outclasses

Wouldn't a Starspan Magus be the more sustainable spike damage build than the melee magi, considering the ranged combatant doesn't need to move between targets?
@cmckee42
Күн бұрын
I feel like it not needing to move makes it better at sustained damage, not burst damage. A melee magus can deal more on a single hit than a ranged magus.
@Mathfinder-aaa
Күн бұрын
@@oiman5733 It’s a spectrum! The Starlit Span Magus spikes damage much harder than most other martials in the game, but is still going to be less spikey than a melee Magus. Consider that (at level 11, where this video was done): - with a composite shortbow and +4 Str, Spellstriking with Gouging Claw, you average you’ll average 2d6 + 2 + 2 + 7d6 (average 35.5) plus 7 persistent damage, and - with a two-handed bastard sword you’d do 2d12 + 5 + 2 + 7d6 (average 42.5) plus 7 persistent damage. The gap is currently about 7 average damage, but as I mentioned in the video, averages don’t really tell the whole story. From anydice you can easily verify that 2d12 + 5 hits harder than 2d6+2 a full 93.83% of the time, and will have more than a 50% chance of dealing more than 8 higher damage than the bow! And in roughly half a level the gap is about to grow, when Greater Striking Runes get involved. It’ll be 3d12 vs 2d6, making those above numbers even more favourable to the melee Magus. That’s not even mentioning that between not worrying about covering and easily accessing flanking, the melee Magus will crit more often. A Starlit Span Magus has the advantage of being able to set up those bursts more easily and without being interrupted as easily, but the melee Magus will still burst way harder when it comes down to it.

The math is wrong. You should not be adding up 5% + 4.7% + 4.2%... You should instead be asking what the probability that the nth target didn't crit succeed and plot that against n. That is closer to 1- (1-.95^n). Rather than adding up each bar, you simply look up n
@Mathfinder-aaa
Күн бұрын
@@borg286 The math isn’t wrong, both formulas are correct! If you do 1-0.95^4 you’ll get the exact same answer as my math of 0.05+(0.05*0.95)+(0.05*0.95^2)+(0.05*0.95^3): 18.549375%. I simply used the method I did because I had 90% of the work done before I put a red box on the graph.
