What's really amazing is that as I listen to these (over and over again) I can actually HEAR the evolution of Patrice's onstage comedy - when he wasn't riffing on the audience. "Elephant in the Room" has a bunch of bits in it that were originally formulated from these conversations. What an amazing man. I became a Patrice fan way too late. But my appreciation of him grows every day.

That’s how all of the regular comics were/are, because if you spend that much time in a room talking to other funny people and you’re all trying to have fun and make it entertaining, you’re going to mine a few nuggets that can be refined into something even better once you bring it up onstage. Bill Burr still does it on his own podcast when he’s just in a room by himself most of the time. Something happens that he comments on, or someone emails the show and boom-there’s another premise for something that can be turned into a fully fleshed out bit. When you go onstage and riff during a set, you don’t have the kind of time to throw out as much stuff as you could on radio. I haven’t heard Jim Norton perform in awhile, outside of a recent roast he did, which was fine-but he wasn’t the best one. His specials he’s done since this time period haven’t been as good, because the show and the guests were at their peak before they did the split show between terrestrial and satellite radio every day, and right up until they forced them out of their private studio XM had renovated for them before the merger. Once they moved to the SiriusXMs studios the quality of guests improved a bit because of who they could get walking through, but I feel like having the comics on air for 3 hours in their own little silo was way better. They could invite listeners up to be in their live audience, the guests were obviously committed to being there for a decently long interview because they went out of their way to be there and weren’t just wandering the halls and doing their circuit. After Ant went off the rails with his alcoholism, racism, and chasing women that were so young it was getting creepy (like 18 and under) and then got fired, that’s when it all started to go downhill. There were still good shows with Opie & Jim, but it was a different vibe. Then when Jim and Sam took their chance to snag Opie’s show out from under him, was when it declined rapidly and once Opie was out I was as well, and I stopped seeing Jim popping up in things and his specials and comedy were fine-but they weren’t making me laugh like the rest of the guys who went on to do bigger better things. So, my meandering point is that I think Jim, Vos and Bobby were much better when they were hanging out and doing radio together and mining for interesting ideas to explore, and since the slow death of the O&A show and brand, they’ve all faded as well. The guys who used to do O&A as less frequent guests have all had their careers take off because they started their own podcasts and have built up their own thing, like Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura, and Joe Rogan obviously. As far as those shows go, the Two Bears, One Cave episodes before Tom moved to Texas were the best because they spent more time in studio together, and that was the most like the vibes when O&A were at their peak in the XM days.

Patrice's laugh in this episode, when they get Bobo going, must have taken days off of his short life. It sounds like he laughs out a tiny piece of his soul. In the life of this ever expanding universe, we had lightning in a bottle for almost 42 years. I feel fortunate to have been a part of it, even just in a listening capacity. He's on my Rushmore of comedy. Also, I can't believe they didn't put Ant on the documentary, but they had Opie. If you're gonna pick one of the two, cuz they weren't gonna get em together, Opie was the wrong option.
