Great documentary, I had never heard of him, so it was nice to learn something about a sport I was unaware of. Paul anderson seemed like a big loveable kid, this was someone who was a real role model for the young boys at that time.

I remember watching him wrestle live on Boston television around 1957. Problem was he was too good. No wrestler could stand a chance with him. He would toss them across the mat with one arm while they tried helplessly to take him down. Wrestling probably just bored him cause he was so much better than everybody else. He just had no competition.

What's even more impressive...taking part in the Olympics even though he had lost weight and was sick AND coming home with gold..! It's not seen before and I doubt it will ever happen again.

No they were to far apart in history. The Russian was professionally trained by the government and was promoted as a a hero in Russian. Anderson had no surport not even in college. I saw this guy pick up a table with 25 people on it just for fun. He didn't need to record anything he was for real.

Figure the girls weigh about 100 lbs each...that's 1600 libs.

I am very uninformed when it comes to sports and how record keeping works, but as I got into watching the weight lifting of what Mr. Anderson was doing, I thought I heard that as an amateur his lifts were not submitted so he was not given the recognition he was due or the records held in his name, Couldn't film of his lifts have been submitted to correct those errors, and was those records not submitted for other reason, like soneone on purpose did not want him credited for those lifts ? Like I said, I have no knowledge at all about how that kind of record keeping works, but it seems something could have been done to fix that kind of major error especially with everyone in that sport knows that the official records that are in their books are WRONG....ITS KIND OF BOGUS , and not just unfair to Paul Anderson, but unfair to the person that the books say holds those records, and everyone competing in that sports knows the records are wrong...

I'm 5 10 and built a lot like Paul. I'm 270 and 19 inch arm's that are hard as rocks with huge shoulders. I don't workout and lifted weight my buddy who is a big weight lifter struggled with. People call me milla the guerrilla. I wish I'd seen this as a 18 year old I'd probably had started lifting to see how far I could take it. I always thought you had to be 6ft4 or so. My wife would joke that I needed to enter a contest cause I'd carry couches and things by myself.

While Russian lifters were financially supported by the government, Anderson simply couldn't afford to continue as an amateur/Olympian. An extra four years of training would've enabled some great lifts. As it was, his Olympic Gold Medal lifts were technically poor: His C&J being more of a push press. With four years of proper coaching, his C&J and snatch might've gone up enough to remain as today's records. That said, many of his word of mouth records are absolutely false: His 6,270 lb back was over-claimed by at least 2,000 lbs

A 540 lbs snatch? I don't believe that for a second. The best he ever did in competition was 335 lbs. It is highly suspect when the discrepancy between anyone's official lifts and the unofficial lifts is this huge. I don't believe half the stuff people say about Paul Andersson. I don't think anyone with some knowledge of strength athletics do.

Dumbass...he said he snatched it off of the rack..meaning that he picked it up at shoulder height then proceeded to press it to arms length...he was doing a press or jerk with th bar on stands at shoulder height....just enjoy the story for what it is...Anderson was way ahead of his time and far ahead of the athletes of his time....all records are eventually eclipsed...you can't compare sportsmen of different generations to one another....

Steroids were created in the thirties. Anyone traveling overseas could buy them. Paul Anderson certainly had access to steroids, which suggests why he required a kidney transplant. Steroids and a gallon of milk daily will destroy anyone's organs. I know Paul Anderson's early training methods. Like most American weightlifters, he trained too-often. He trained daily with heavy weights. The human body cannot recover from lifting heavy weights daily. The body needs time to recover from the overload and repair and rebuild. The ONLY way to accelerate the recovery period is with drugs. The primary drug for that purpose is steroids. Anderson was reckless with steroid usage and it ruined his health. Since Anderson, many powerlifters have needed kidney transplants from steroid use. Just the excessive consumption of meat & dairy destroys kidneys. The added use of steroids almost guarantees it. Anderson's great strength was from steroid use. He was ground zero. Whitewashing the truth hides the danger of drugs in the weightlifting and bodybuilding industries. Teen lifters will do anything to increase their poundage. Once they experience the increase in power it's near impossible to give up the new-found strength. They use steroids until their health fails, just like Paul Anderson. Incidentally, many of the "strength records" Paul Anderson held weren't "strict" lifts. For example, the one-arm press in this video shows Anderson pressing the weight upwards while dropping his torso and shoulder which gets him past his sticking point. Oh, if Anderson had a job he could affort weights. They are cheap. Used weights sre even cheaper.
