Pistols broke up on 1/14/1978 after their final gig at the Winterland Ballrom in San Fran. Rotten left to form PiL (with ex Clash guitarist Keith Levene and Jah Wobble), Sid went solo, and Paul and Steve were the only Pistols left. So, they wrote this song, about either one of the Johns that left (Sid's real name was John Ritchie). They went on to Brazil to record with train robber Ronnie Biggs, eventually came back and had Ed Tudor-Pole sing for a while. Where this is filmed, Idk.

I prefer the version on the Great Rock n Roll Swindle which as others said is sung by Paul Cook (and not just because as a singer and a drummer I like it when someone does both). I didn't even realise there was another version till "Kiss This" came out....and even then I thought it was an outake until I bought a second hand copy of the single on Ebay!

There are two versions of this song, one with Paul Cook singing (from the film the Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle) and this one which was the single version with Steve Jones on vocals. The middle 8 has different lyrics. It was recorded well after John Lydon left the Pistols and prefaced Jones and Cook as "The Professionals" whose songs all sound very similar to this.

I know the Ex Pistols was a completely different band, but it was the only thing I could think of where Steve and Sid worked together outside the Sex Pistols. And, yes, Matlock and Sid played together, it was a one-gig band, The Vicious White Kids. I forget who the drummer was, I think the guitarist was Keith Levene (soon to be of PiL), Matlock on bass and Sid sang. They did it cuz Sid saw Glen in NYC, Sid was broke and said they should do a gig together.

Paul: Silly Thing was a thing Steve and I put together for the film. It was originally called Silly Cunt. It was about Sid or it could have been about Malcolm. Everyone. It dealt with the stupidity of the whole Pistols fracas after we had all broken up. Steve's singing on this track. Steve: Classic Pistols riff; too bad John didn't sing on it... I sometimes wonder what we would have sounded like had it carried on...

I knew Steve New played with Sid (he also was the Pistols' guitarist in the days when Jones was still on vocals). Also, fun fact about Keith Levene: when the Pistols and Clash were touring together (before Mick Jones got all bitchy about Sid's swastika shirt), Sid told Levene the phrase "Belsen was a gas", and, with just that, he wrote the main riff to "Belsen Was A Gas".
