+Jamie Bullock Well Paul is horrible at hearing his pitches when bending, so he bends sharp, Gary if he misses, it's still not as noticeable, probably cause he is much more musical, generally speaking. Paul = shredlord, nothing bad with that, it's just this piece takes much more concentration then playing metal, where you can bend a little shitty and still get away with it.

In another video Paul is singing this an octave lower, here he's straining on that range even though he's not a singer. But that's part of why he's so cool: he takes chances and always pushes it a little more. You can tell in certain shred moments.

I hate people who think that a cover has to be played note to note! I don't care if it's not the way Moore played it,it's how PAUL plays it! Gilbert is the greatest guitarist who ever lived as he admitted that he's never played the same thing twice. This goes to show how great a musician he is as he still retained some speed but never lost any emotion in the notes. It's like he's composing a masterpiece without trying. The stubborn grandpas saying he's not Gary need to shut up and realise that he was never trying to be!!!!!

***** He is one of my favourite guitarists when it comes to shred. BUT you must be tone deaf if you don't hear he bends stuff out of tune A LOT and VERY often. You simply can't expect PG to sound exactly like the creator of the song itself. Gary Moore has his name, feel, attitude and of course emotion all over this song, when he played it, which would be nearly impossible for anyone to match. I saw Gary Moore in concert play this song live and he was a guitarist that was truly emotionally connected to the instrument itself. Hats off to Paul and HIS STYLE of playing this classic!

Guthrie Govan also did a cover of SGTB. Both, Paul and Guthrie, failed in my opinion. It's not because they don't understand (the technical side of) this song................. they don't understand Gary Moore. First of all, (most of the time) Gary had a much rougher and rawer sound, he hated to be too clinical. But the most important difference between them, with Gary, you can feel him battling the guitar to make it do what he wants, he is on the edge of losing control, trying to get a feeling across. There is drama in that, and that is the real art. Conversely, Paul and Guthrie make everything sound and look too easy, there is no sense of drama in their lead styles.
@kiranchamling20
9 жыл бұрын
Fotzkopp1980 That's exactly how I feel, They learned the song insideout,each and every note and in between but couldn't understand the Gary's approach. He is indeed purer and rawer sounding guitarist, unlike many guitarists who tend to use tons of effect pedals. As an audience myself I love to see how Gary battles with the strings and everytime I feel like I'm on a roller-coaster ride which about to drop from 1000 ft. I don't know if any one has noticed this, Gary hits open strings (without sounding off) in between every phrases. I love that sound. PS for me there are only 2 guitarist in this world whose approach to the rawer sounding guitar tone are Sir Gary Moore and Sir Mark Knopfler, they both of given the Fender and the Gibson a benchmark tone.
@SomeDudeOnline

Fotzkopp1980 Claiming that neither Paul or Guthrie understood Gary Moore as well as you, seems like a very ignorant/egotistical thing to say. They may have failed the cover in your opinion but they weren't playing for you. They most likely played it to satisfy their desires. I'm actually fairly certain I've seen a Paul Gilbert interview where he named Gary Moore as one of his idols. I doubt he did a cover of this song because he thought it would be a crowd pleaser. He probably did a cover of this song because he loves it and feels very passionately about it. You have absolutely no idea what they know about Gary Moore or what they feel about a piece of music unless they've spoken about it or unless you're psychic. Just because they don't struggle with it, doesn't mean they're lacking anything.

He told me, that Gary was his biggest influence from a technical point of view, and overall his second biggest influence after Jimi Hendrix. Actually, i wasn't very surprised about that. And he also told me, that he still can't replicate Gary's approach of feel. So, i have an idea what Paul knows about Gary.

AlexanderRock911 I enjoyed the entire performance. The guy is an artist and sometimes art isn't perfect. Art is meant to be interpreted by the observer. When I listen to music I try to imagine what mental space the artist was in when they created, played, or performed it

Music, by definition does fall within the criteria of art. Why did you send me such an absurd and poorly articulated message? If you don't appreciate the artist's interpretation I don't care. You should find something productive to do. Enjoy your day.

abels121 Just saying, all music (whether it's Bach, Justin Beiber, or some old time Blues song) is art whether you want to believe it or not. I'm sorry that you're ignorant enough to believe that only certain music is art. You're argument is like saying a drawing by a 3 year old child isn't art just because it's not at the same "skill level" as the Mona Lisa. Next time you begin to argue with someone, you should really have some knowledge on what you're arguing about and not base it off your opinions.

Is there something Paul can NOT do?
@arss3169
8 жыл бұрын
+Greg Jonson Yeah, he cannot play blues guitar. He is a metal guitarist attempting and faking to play the blues. This is not "the blues". Paul is an incredible guitarist, but he is simply not a blues player. You have to grow-up immersed in a certain style of music, live and breathe that music to really understand it's feel, tone, style, and sound. He just doesn't get it. Just because someone has technique, that doesn't mean they can play every style. great musicians can fake and bluff their way through various styles. I bet Paul can bluff his way through jazz, but a real jazz-head will know he is faking it, and is missing the essence.
@DrinkWater713

+Arss You exagerate. It does take years and years to get a blues "tone" and "feel". But you dont have to grou-up immersed on it. That is bullshit. It's a skill that you develop. Expression is a skill. Not always a physical dexterity one, but it can be developed over time, just like playing ridiculously fast (like Mr Gilbert). He is still new to blues guitar, and if his hearing loss doesnt become a limiting factor, you will still see Paul Gilbert playing "master level" blues in like 5-7 years tops.

He cannot play the blues. Simple as that. Anyone that is a real blues fan can see that. He is a fantastic, amazing guitarist, but he isn't a blues player. Could Eric Clapton or Santana play like Yngwie? No, it isn't their natural style. Both great guitarists, but not metal players. Buddy Rich would have probably been a shitty drummer for Led Zeppelin or The Beatles. Possibly the best drummer in history, but he has no clue of rock n roll. He would have ruined The Beatles. Vai, Johnson, Satriani, are shit blues players. Amazing players, but they completely miss the feel and vibe and essence of the blues.

Actually, if you go onto Dimarzio's website, you'll see a video of Paul and Larry talking about Paul's use of the Air Classics. So, they were always a pickup that he used, just not typically in his Fireman.

@AE-hx7wy

+Spectral Ultra Cool, at least someone heard it ;) I pointed it out too. Paul's sharp bends is his biggest problem. I think he underestimate this piece, it takes a great deal of concentration to really focus on hitting those pitches. Playing metal bending sharp/flat slightly, is part of that style, but here you need to be really focused, and Pauls typical shredding just doesn't cut it. Paul's still a great shredder, guitar player, but his bends really makes him "fall flat" (sharp! lol) here.

Good job. I know some people are knocking him but this is how Paul expresses himself. That is the beauty of music. We all have a different voice. As for his singing. It is far better than mine. My singing has been banned in several country because of laws against torture. Lol!

Mark Griffiths Actually, an AWFUL lot of Gary Moore's work is "horrible shred-fest" - a lot of stuff on Dirty Fingers, for example, is a cacophonous, unmusical mess. (And I'm someone who started listening to GM with Colosseum II, and who still considers "Last Exit" to be one of the best instrumental/jazz rock tracks of all time).

SomeDudeOnline Well, lack of skill it is then. I'm a fan of Paul Gilbert, mainly his alternate picking pyrotechnics. His vibrato and bending IS kinda sucky though, there is no debating that. If somebody claims otherwise and can't hear it the person is either tone deaf or star struck, blinded by being a fanatic fan. I'm a fan, just not to the point of not hearing what is obvious, he bends out of tune. A lot
