For me all of the army schools are like being a fish in a bowl pressed up against the glass. I'll never be able to get into them, but I genuinely am thrilled to hear of people and their journeys. Also, I noticed the change of pace to break and have a meal or time to fix kit/change socks which is rad.

2 days ago I did my 1st 12 mile ruck: 12.37 miles w/a 35lbs ruck @ a 16:07 min. per mile pace. I failed to reach my goal of under 3 hours for 12 miles. I'm going to try it again after I get my hiking boots back from being resoled. I did this ruck with my running shoes and immediately realized it was a bad idea. Age 50.

not sure where your rucking at? but when i did my 12 miller in the army, i walked to a light pole and jogged to the next light pole and did that the whole time, i was never in the best shape and i did it in 2 hours and 37 mins. you just need to figure out your pace and how to keep it.

@@hman7787 I get that, but I also get age is only a number. When I got my time it was probably my 50th, 12 mile. At fort Campbell Kentucky, the home of the air assault School we did a ruck every week. 4, 8 an 12 depending on the week. But the biggest takeaway is mental and keeping a good pace. Although I do congratulate you for doing it at your age, if your goal is under 3 hours which you stated. I was just trying to give some great advice to help you get there.

14-89 grad (yes when it was 4 phases). On the Peer Evals; they actually work themselves out. I heard all the stories while I was there and everyone’s opinion on how to do them or “beat” them so everyone gets through. The fact when I was there was that the weak could not hide and everyone who put in the effort made it through. If someone gets peered out “There is a Reason”,…they were weak and you don’t want them. Here is the important fact; you do your part and no one is going to peer you out.

1-90 grad (Winter Tab Ranger, 4 phases). Agree completely, except for Darby phase peer was partly group politics and alliances. Saw this one soldier who kept getting selected as TL (back then unrated position) by different squad leaders, because he had his shit wired tight. He was always busy, getting no sleep making sure his team was squared away. He made sure that day's squad leader(s) appeared squared away on his watch. He was from the enlisted side in a squad heavy with West Pointers fresh out of IOBC, they ganged up on him and peered him out. It was like WTF. Luckily he got a borderline peer, so ended up in different squad and did well. Those ring knockers, soon realized Ranger school is not a personality contest in subsequent phases, a few of them ending up getting peered themselves or a no go. So be mindful of the group dynamics in Darby.

That’s funny, in SF Selection everyone in my hut peered out this one guy. He didn’t volunteer for any clean up details, was always in the bunk first and he didn’t even sweep under his own bunk. He went to the Drop board and got an NTR (Never To Return). Something as simple as being a regular soldier he couldn’t do or even work inside the box. In Ranger school the team leader positions weren’t graded, so I got asked every time to be a team leader for many of the squad members and I went to Ranger School as a PFC. Me and a Marine were team leaders damn near every day in mountains and Florida. We did our best to get the squad leaders a Go. I did peer an E6 low once, but I made sure I put his strengths and his faults. He was squad leader when peer evals were being done and I know he read my evaluation. He was looking at me with that 1000 mile stare, or he was just droning. So I walked up to him and said I know your read the evals the way you’re looking at me. I did what was right for that period of time. He was an infantryman from the 82nd and was slacking off, and I was just a PFC and I told him I know he could do better than that. We both Graduated. I’m guessing I did good on peers they were never mentioned to me by any RI cadre. RLTW!

Being a good TL is a curse. Anyone whose turn to be in charge will always choose the poor bastard with talent. Its actually a good things RIs quickly pick up on that, and it can the make a world of difference between a minor minus or major minus. In Dugway, UT (Desert Phase) I was selected to go back to cantonment and swap out fresh laundry for everyone. RI let me changed my clothes there and haul back everyone's laundry bag with spare clothes. I forgot my atropine injectors in by dirty bdu's. That night had to go to night court in RI's tent I knew this was at least a Major Minus and get me recycled or dx's, since Dugway is considered a chemical threat. I wasn't the only one at court awaiting judgement, Dudes coming out in Tears because they got dx'd or recycled. My turn, they tore into me called me a dumb ass and few other choice words then the senior RI said "Sing me a song", my mind drew a blank only song I knew was: Pink Floyd's The Final Cut Lyrics "The post war dream". It saved my ass I didn't get anything, not even a record contract. Except told to pull my head out my ass your a day away from graduation.

my airborne infantry outfit had quite a few Ranger trained NCO's.At that time 63-66 you had to be an E-5 or officer to even test for it.I noticed three things which I'm sure others have noticed, they don't get lost , they can carry a heavy load forever , they can think when the rounds start cracking by your head.I was in vietnam and out early in the war. Many times I've wondered if I hadn't been so mentally tired and physically worn down after my tour would I have stayed in and gone for the school.I found both the airborne and Vietnam to be a mental and physical survival school without equal, and I've used that many times, certainly it taught me what a "bad day" really was.

I am an old Ranger, class 10-67, a pretty tough class but that is a story in itself! When I think of peer ratings, what comes to mind is who inspires the rest of the class. We had a 40 year old in our class who inspired us; if that old man could do it we could do it. We had an Israeli who could actually run circles around the formation while we all about to pass out from exhaustion. We had guy spit on his captures when asked to sign a paper during the escape and evasion, guy had balls. When we walked the plank with the steps and crawled the cable to touch the tab, I ran across which apparently inspired others. The things you do should be done in a way that inspires your Ranger buddies and you will get great peer ratings. I agrees with Gritty Soldier that you have to volunteer, and carry more than you load as well. Ranger is a title earned for life and many of us believe it is the highest award achievable by a solider, (partly because a CIB is not a title).

The last thing you need to worry about- unless you are a Goldbricker, or a Spotlight Ranger. CARRY YOUR LOAD AND THEN SOME. Pick one of your RI's traits, and make it your own. Be a beast, make it a point to step up and help your buddies, and focus on the task at hand. Join your team. Take care of your team, step up and take the Machinegun/ carry the Ammo. Don't make excuses. Just a few recommends, in case you really need to ask- You want to avoid being Peered out- Don't Be A D!@K. Remember- you join the community, you are going to be working either With the team you are going through with, or Someone who they know they are going to course with later, or before. People Talk, so keep it in the back of your mind that your reputation can either follow you, or go before you. One way- Or the Other. Go do good things, Ranger Pup.
