At the final part of the northern regions of Portugal, where the Douro marks the border between Portugal and Spain, we find the viewpoint of Penedo Durão situated about 2km from the village of Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Bragança district. It is a huge rock that stands on the right bank of the Douro river and belongs to the International Douro Natural Park (on the left bank of the river, in Spain, is the Arribes del Duero Natural Park). The cliff falls almost perpendicular over the Douro, just about the point where the navigability of the river ends, called "Saltinho" in which is located the hydroelectric dam of Saucelle (Spain). Penedo Durão is a schist promontory with huge slanting boards outlined against the sky, many covered in mosses and plants giving the stone a yellowish color. Vultures, griffins and peregrine falcons fly beneath the cliffs. The griffin (Gyps fulvus) is a vulture with a brownish plumage flying long distances gliding almost without flapping their wings. It feeds almost exclusively on dead flesh, passing long time hovering high in the sky looking for corpses and flying in circles. In flight it has a typical silhouette, huge wings, much larger than the body, short and rounded tail, completely open, and shrunken neck. In the images of this video we follow the flight of some griffins.
