But when he "miscounts", he stops just shy of the table and doesn't actually compress the barrel against the wood. It seems to act more like a stapler than a nail gun, activated by pressure rather than a trigger. I think the "nails" might also have some sort of sticking property to them. These two things together is how he can hold the nail gun to his hand and Tellers throat with absolute safety and confidence.

@Matthew Olsen orrrrrrr hahaha they turned the regulator pressure down on the compressor so it wouldn't blow framing nails right thru the piece of wood, and they can get thru the whole act without the fucking compressor kicking on making noise that would be hard for Penn to talk over. More over he just happens to land the nail gun perfectly over the "hidden nails" every time? Also what about when he fires the blank? The board is full of hidden nails that a magnet in the gun will magically pull up out of no where except for when he intentionally fires a blank? Also I'm not sure what kind of nail guns you're using assuming you have used a nail gun and are not basing your entire knowledge off a youtube video you watched explaining why you cant use a nail gun to actually shoot nails, but I can easily use my palm to compress the safety on a framing nailer

@Farb S i mean that would make the trick is no harder than doing it for real, since he would have to remember the order that the nails pop up perfectly. Co-ordinating the right nail to pop up with the gun would be impossibly hard. the gun needed to be presses down significantly hard enough to engage the cartridge of nails to release. you can see he is ramming it into the wood and the barrel clocks back into place yet he doesn't do this once when he is putting it in his hands. I've also worked in construction for a decade nearly im pretty sure
@TomTheSiberianHusky
4 жыл бұрын
How the trick is done: If you've ever used a nail gun, you know you have to apply significant downward pressure for it to shoot a nail. The end of the gun has to make contact with a flat surface and the barrell needs to be pushed back. If you press the trigger without applying pressure on a surface, it'll just shoot compressed air. That's the safety mechanism. You're welcome. EDIT(2 months later): I am probably wrong about this due to issues of safety. Read replies and you'll find the only civil discussion in the history of KZitem comments. I hate it when I make viral comments.

Exactly, it’s a pressure strike when he hits the wood that he doesn’t do with any other service The moment when he “loses” the pattern and is “confused” on why the nail gun didn’t shoot a nail is because he didn’t actually hit the surface hard enough with the nail gun. Watch it in slow motion and it definitely looks like he is slamming it into the board but not his hand, and there's also moments where it looks like there is possibly the top of a nail visible before he lowers the nail gun. jbroadway12 You’reoverthinking this. The nail gun is real, but every time that Penn has the gun pointed at himself or Teller, he doesn’t actually pull the trigger, they simply have someone else (possibly Teller) activating a pneumatic air gun with no projectiles or attachments are to make the noise that leads you to think Penn actually pulled the trigger. Penn basically spells out that he’s lying about the whole memorization bit, (the only things Penn had to remember was his lines, and to not pull the trigger of the nail gun while it was pointed at anyone...) and has spelled out in previous interviews that during the “death defying” stunts on his show, (and most professional magic acts) the practitioners are in no danger and are very nonchalant and relaxed during a performance, as everything has been calculated to ensure safety...

Inco gneito no it won't. It's a safety mechanism. The nose must have pressure on it for nails to fire out. Now if you use an old nail gun then yes it is possible to shoot nails anywhere at the pull of a trigger. How ever this trick is done really without the use of the nail gun. The nails are coming out of the board instead of the nail gun. The nail gun isn't even loaded.
@darktherapy
6 жыл бұрын
Yes a usual nail gun the tip needs to be pressed down. If not the gun won’t fire and you won’t hear the noise of the air passing through it. This gun makes sounds every time the trigger is pressed so it’s been modified. It doesn’t have any nails in it as you’d see them in the sleeve. It’s been covered to hide the fact it’s empty. It’s a trick nail gun. There are probably nails in the board already and there’s a magnet attached to the tip of the gun that pulls them up from the board giving the illusion they are shooting from the gun. Magnets inside each hole the nails are in probably holds them up so they don’t fall back down again. The noise from the gun is intimidating and gives the illusion it’s working. But in reality it’s a trick gun. Also that air tank would have had to refill itself during the performance if the gun was really using the same air pressure needed to fire real nails (the noise that would make would spoil the performance). In no way are there any nails in that gun, it’s far too unsafe to attempt with a real nail gun and pressing its safety tip.

If you go frame by frame at 1:28 you can see the head of another nail pops out of the board momentarily which means the nailgun tip has a magnet pulling nails out of the board.
@keaton718
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, he only slides the board a little bit sideways too. The nails are longer than the board so the table must have some trenches running along it where the prepared nails can poke through the bottom, allowing the board to slide a little bit too. The magnet in the nail gun just lifts the nails up a little bit, leaving them still wedged into the board. The gun may propel the magnet forward with each trigger pull and then retract it, allowing Penn to lean into it to hold the board down so he doesn't accidentally lift up the board. The board may also be held down with magnets too because it showed some unusual resistance when he slid it across slightly, or maybe some of the prepared nails just rubbed up against the side of the trench.

No. Its the other way around, watch the gun tip at 0.25 speed the nail is placed onto a magnetic strip on the board.
@DaveMcKeegan
Жыл бұрын
You are way over complicating it - its a regular nail gun firing actual nails into the wood. The only trick is that nail guns have a safety mechanism that they won't fire a nail out unless the gun head is pressed hard against a surface. When he places his hand in front its not depressing the gun head so only fires air and for the 'misfire' into the wood, he just presses the trigger just before it presses it against the wood
@acvgaming5601
Жыл бұрын
@@DaveMcKeegan Absolutely not. He even says in the act that there is never any danger. There is a 0 percent chance that the nail gun can actually fire nails. Not in a million years. Especially putting it up against someone's neck and ''misfiring'' it.
@bluetiger2468
Жыл бұрын
@@acvgaming5601 Agreed! It would be far too dangerous. Safety mechanisms are in place in case of an emergence, you should never rely on it. If Pen was only relying on the safety mechanism as he pressed it against Teller's neck, that would be incredibly irresponsible and dangerous. There is always that slim chance the machine might think it's pressed against a solid object. My first thought was magnets on the board with the nail gun pulling it out. I tried to see if there was a comment already pointing that out. Even when he moved the piece of wood, it didn't slide. It looked like it was intentionally moved to a certain spot. He doesn't move it at all for the rest of the show or lift it up. If you think about it, why did they have the table underneath? Pen says it's so that the audience can see the nail, but I believe that was a misdirection. To get the audience to not to question it. Because why not have the piece of wood higher up, have the table underneath, and do the trick that way? Then the audience would be able to clearly see the nail going all the way through the piece of wood but also leaving a part of it exposed on the top. It would also give the cameras a nice shot of the action.

If you watch the video at 1/4 speed - you can see how the trick is done. Took me a very long time to figure it out. But I know two things about them... One - they never do a trick where there is any real possibility of harm, even if the trick goes bad. Two - what Penn and Teller are... are masters at the old school misdirection. All their stuff is executed so...sooo... well. I mean even the simple stuff... like the ball in cup... like the quarter trick (behind the ear)... when Teller does it... it's so UNBELIEVABLY smooth and flawless... it truly is just elegant to watch... Penn is the same way... especially with card tricks... he is unbelievable in his mechanics control of cards... truly. And in this trick... he's such a powerful force... and you're so busy trying to take it all in... watching him... watching his hands... watching him talk... while he moves around... It's all really really amazing. I won't ruin how it's done... but again - if you watch the video at 1/4... and pay very close attention... you'll see how it's done and how Penn is never in any real danger. It's an amazing trick.

Penn lifts them by using a magnet or some other mechanism in the tip of the “nail gun,” which is designed to make the noise when he pulls the trigger. From there it’s all his incredible showmanship. The only thing I can’t figure out is how the nails stayed up after he pulled them, rather than falling back into the slot. I’m sure there’s an explanation, but it’s beyond my engineering skill to do that without any noise.

it’s way easier than that, you need to depress the end of the barrel slightly to release the safety and cause the nail gun to actually load a nail. if the end of the barrel doesn’t have any pressure on it, it won’t fire a nail, but it will still fire a pulse of compressed air. when penn touches the end of the barrel with his hand, he’s doing it very lightly without any pressure, so the safety remains engaged. when he touched the board, he pushes down and releases the safety.

I love this trick and is very original. It can be improved, I am sure by adding more "danger", for instance by showing the nails going into the gun (can be done with some rigging I am sure). The plank is the key, holding fake nails (plastic?) that are spring released when touched by the gun. When touched, the "nails" pops up. He just needs to aim a bit correctly at the position of this fake nail. The illusion is enhanced by making most of the nails not popping UP very straight (when the gun clearly is). I think it has been mentioned many times on the comments, but yeah. Also, if there is one thing giving away the fake nails is that he never touches or hits them ever.. :)

He could do that if he would be agile enough to secretly put a fake hand while distracting with blabber, and then simulate a huge pain. I think that would be epic. But well, then the nailgun must work well...

Im a construction worker and nail guns wont fire if you dont put some pressure on the tip of the gun for safty reasons. In other words, if he presured the tip of the gun against his palm as he did on the wood a nail will come out but he didnt. The triger in a nail gun works as an air trap which prevents from coming out of the air tank.

The lie is that he has a way to make the sound without a nail coming out. Whether that be a hidden button or a safety mechanism, there was no sequence to be memorized.

He could have also had the gun rigged with a magnet. Pulling collapsed nails up out of the board to create the illusion. That would be the best way that wouldn't include any sort of danger. As per his closing statement.

@@bradoc5067 The trick only really works if you don't know how nail guns work. Nail guns have a mechanism that only allows them to fire when pressure is applied to the tip. The one time the nail gun fires a blank on the wood is when he fires it before it hits the wood and barely touches it.

Slowing it down to 0.25X speed. I think there is a magnet at the end of the nail gun like others have said. If you watch 3.29, it looks like the nail is too far right to be aligned with the barrel. You can actually also see the lip of the nail come up as he is lifting the nail gun. And if memory serves right, Penn is very critical on keeping their acts safe. The risk of using a real nailgun would be too great except if it were shooting nerf.

He says both of those things in the act. For the nailgun, he immediately tells the audience that memorization is a lie. That's what I caught on but he's so charismatic, the PTCHEW PTCHEW is going off, and most importantly your brain instinctively goes "THAT SOUND MEANS NAILS" that you are still sucked into the joke. Then he shows people a "plausible" scenario with "taking the nails out" where ANYONE who hasn't used a nailgun (or know about it's safety features) will say to themselves "Yeah that makes sense, it will fire the air into an empty chamber". For the safety part, he described how "It is morally wrong" to have any chance of him hurting himself or Teller, because that would make the audience complicit in P&T's pain. He didn't want to do that to them. Funnily enough, Jackass does the same thing. All of the jokes, pain and humiliation of Jackass was done to the members of the crew, never to civilians, even when it involved civilians. I love how he literally told the audience (and us) that it is all a lie, but majority of us will believe it anyways. That's the power of magic.

I'm going to go with Occam's Razor, the nail gun is real and it shoots nails... but when he aims at his hand or Teller it's just a sound effect and a fake trigger pull.

Gimmicked board. This is basically like how you make a flower appear out of nowhere. The nails lay down flat, and when he hits them with the nail gun, they spring up.

The real trick is not Penn remembering the nail sequence but his ability to remember this performance and do it the exact same way every Time all the way down to his hand movements ,when he slicks back his hair and how he says things. Go and watched the synced up video of when he did this trick at 2 different shows and you'll see he does the exact samething everytime.

Nailgun is pressure activated. Pressure applied to both trigger and mouth equals nail deployment; pressure to only the trigger and not the mouth equals pneumatic hiss and no nail deployment. This is an inherent safety feature found in most nailguns to avoid injury. The belt with missing nails is the misdirection.
