Thanks so much. I had not realise the change, especially as I struggle getting to grips with the K3.3. Thank you - I will be taking care and checking that out.

Thanks for this, helpful and informative. Big help to the Pentax community, this will help cut the time in figuring the best settings. Mk111 is turning out to be a classic I think, great camera.

Kobie The back button works great on the K70 & K3-11 for BIF. I went to Newport Beach CA on last Sunday got great pictures of BIF with the K3-11 and the Pentax 55 -300 PLM with the waves crashing in the background

I agree. On all previous PENTAX cameras, back button focus works beautifully. But something has changed with the K-3 III. I never had issues with my K200D, K-30 or K-3.

AFC = in motion. It is better for shooting birds in fly in open sky without movement background and can let the camera choosing auto focus. When you use AFC shoot the water with the duck stands still and the water waves move, of course , it will autofocus the movement waves and that is why you miss the duck focus (in this case you can only use the centre point) . To shoot flying birds on the lake or ocean background, you need to use centre point. To shoot the birds flying above the lake, your lens points above the water, you can use auto focus with AFC.

Sure! That´s the first thing I´ve seen on the video, the cormorant, right when you were saying there was nothing around I was telling "hey there at your back there´s something!" :D :D For that static small subject I believe AF single will work best. For such kind of subjects the K3-II I tried before buying the D500 was amazing. Pin point nailed focus. Even njo matter how dark it is. Yes, faster and more accurate than the D500, which I have to use single point to get best result. If it´s at AFC is not able to be so accurate. Tracking is another story. But focusing a branch of a tree, a bird in between branches, etc, even at AFC the K3-II showed me better results. So this new beast must be even better!. But don´t pay so much attention to the point showed by the camera, just check if where you focused is in focus. That´s what really matters. Think the camera has a lot of points in between the selectable ones too. I have a lot of birds in flight in focus and the focus point is in another neighbour. :D I believe the camera has the possibility to allow you adjust the tracking ability. It would be interesting a video about it. But you would need action for that purpose. At least birds in flight crossing between trees or stuff like that. Regards.

Super useful stuff! I have the K-70, and as far back as the film era, I usually shoot in Av mode.I've been "starting" to experiment more. How reliable do you think Pentax' Scenes mode are?
@KobieMC
2 жыл бұрын
The scene modes used to be really good (film days with the MZ series cameras). They aren't bad now (K-S1/II and K-30/K-50) but they aren't as good as they were with the MZ series. They do help with some things like white balance and contrast/Saturation. But I prefer to just shoot raw and edit the photo as I envisioned it when I took it.

I would like to see the planned video about taking birds in flight. I was able to shoot swallows last two weeks with the 55-300 PLM and K-3 III, and I really struggled at first. A lot of times, it wasn't able to acquire focus on anything, and blue sky was the worst. And it was often impossible to focus at infinity at 300mm. In the end, I have several good shots, but for a good part of them, the K-3 III didn't see as focused. I have such troubles since getting the lens, especially hard to focus on cruising airliners. And then I cleaned the K-3 III, a bit of the tiny vacuum over sensor and around. I then tried again on airliners, and it worked fine every times, using same parameters as before.

Hi Kobie, Thank you for another interesting and very helpful video. I own a K-3 iii and find the autofocus system complex. It's difficult for me to choose which option to use. Your views are helpfull and I hope you can tell us more. Best regards.

Very interesting. I find the AFs & AFc a bit difficult to get correct. And when I look at SFXn. I'm lost.
@KobieMC

The AF is more exacting on the K-3 III since the AF point is much smaller than in previous Pentax cameras. It does take some getting used to. For the S.Fn it takes some playing around to really understand how it works. My suggestion for the S.Fn is to limit the amount of functions to only things you change often. Such as AF.S/AF.C and maybe AF point modes.

I don't understand. On my K-3i I will be in AFC, SEL expanded where I can move the AF point around and it focuses on whatever is at that point. Then if that thing moves it tracks it. The K3iii cannot do that? Why doesn't it focus on your focus point and then track from there?
@KobieMC
2 жыл бұрын
The K-3 III has more AF.C options and is a more precise camera in a matter of speaking. For the most part, yes using regular SEL expanded does work. But not the same way as the K-3/II. The K-3 III is a more exacting camera and each setting has no wiggle room. If you're using AF.C, it should be with a moving subject. With the older cameras you could "cheat" because they weren't that smart. You can get away with AF.C in SEL expanded like the older generation by turning off the RGBir sensor coupling. But then you don't get the advanced tracking the K-3 III offers.

@@KobieMC I think I understand better now, thank you. I think I will have to look at the new K3iii modes in detail to truly appreciate it. I was worried the take away was that the AF got worse with the new camera, instead of better. Sounds like I was wrong. Thanks again for your great videos and for responding to us viewers. I really appreciate it.

@@jbp6759 At first glance, I can see where there would be some confusion, I look at it this way... Older Generation Pentax Camera AF.C = "Oh, you want me to follow what you focused on if it moves? Okay, I'll wait until it moves and follow along as best I can". K-3 Mark III AF.C = "Oh, you want me to find things that are moving to track where they're going and how fast they're moving? No sweat! I can even scan to find moving things, just tell me the specifics of what you want me to do and I'll get it done".

@@KobieMC That clears it up for me, thank you! I hope they add a mode that's more old school just with better tracking. For wildlife I don't need the camera to choose what to focus on, but to stay focused on what I tell it to. For people it is very nice for it to automatically find a face or eye, but again, in a crowd it is nice to tell the camera what to focus on and it keeps that in focus even as it moves.

Not only in water. My girls played badminton and I pointed the camera center AF ring on their bodies and it hit mostly the forest. AFC mode. Girls moving, forest still so that it takes moving subjects are not correct, it justs hit anywhere except what you aim on. 15 000 pictures and endless testning on birds, sports, bicykle race, motocross etc etc, just bullshit unfortunately. K1-ll works much better. Shoot 4000 pics last weekend with Canon R5, IQ sucks but tracking wow here we speak.

Why does Pentax even have these autofocus modes and settings if they don't work and you have to use something else? Af.c auto dosen't work. Solution. Use another focus setting. Then why have af.c auto? This is without using bbf even. It doesn't lock on to movement for me. It focuses on either the closest possible point, some random spot, or refuses to even select a focus spot and just takes an image.
