To revive sad peonies, cut 3" from the stem with a very sharp knife. The stronger the slant on the cut the better. Place them in fresh, clean water and let them drink. Often times, if they do not drink well it is either a bad cut or, a previous air bubble in the stem. Cutting off 3" will solve both issues.

Peony - peonía. They are a late spring - early summer bloomer. Commercially they are now available nearly year-round. April - June in the Northern Hemisphere, June - August in Alaska, October - January in the Southern Hemisphere.

@MyFagaras The time that it takes a cut peony blossom to open fully varies widely depending on the variety, temperature and humidity. As a basic guide, allow five days...

How long does it take for them to bloom from super tight like these? Thanks so much!
@FlowerSchool

It really depends on the conditions. If you give them a cut and place them in warm water, then place a warmish room they should open within a week or maybe sooner. You could also create their own hot house by placing a trash bag over the top of the bucket. Good luck to you!

When you did the final you didn't make a long slanted cut and didn't do it underr water. How do you know when to do it under water?
@FlowerSchool
3 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question, Kim! As you probably know, floral design practices change over time and it's no longer considered necessary to cut the stems under water. Leanne does cut them on an angle so that they can have enough stem surface to drink well and hydrate. She also uses a sharp knife so it won't compress or crush the stem when it's cut. Thank you so much for watching our show today and we hope you will join us again very soon. Wishing you a weekend filled with flowers as much as possible!

I too love peonies. However, I am the wrong person to ask about "growing" peonies. I suggest a local garden club or nursery for advice. Enjoy the peonies!

Dear Leanne, I got my mothers a few peonies for mother's day but they seem to be dehydrated even though I give them enough water. The petals are not firm and do not hold up like when I got them. What should I do? Please help! Thank you!

I've dried peonies, they just need to be partially open not fully bloomed or else the petals will fall. Just hang them upside down. I have a coral sunset and its truly breathtaking.

That's a great question, Olena! Leanne likes to use at least three types of foliage for her designs. In this show, she used Umbrella Fern, Israeli Ruscus, and Lily Grass. Thanks very much for watching our show, and please have fun with flowers in the meantime!

Love your videos do you cut them in a diagonal or straight across? I cut mine diagonally downward last night and this morning they were wilted. Help!
@FlowerSchool
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind comment, Melisa! We usually cut our flowers on the diagonal and then place them in fresh water and flower food so they can hydrate well before designing. Cutting flowers on the diagonal with a sharp knife gives them the stems a longer surface area from which to drink. Also it helps to buy peonies when they are in bud form so they will last longer. We were so glad you could join us for peony care and handling, and hope this video helps keep your flowers fresh and beautiful. Look forward to seeing you again soon for more fabulous floral tips and techniques!

Hi Leanne, my daughter's wedding was yesterday, and most of the flowers were peonies, especially coral charm. They are absolutely gorgeous, and I'm trying to figure out a way to dry her bouquet. Any suggestions? Thanks so much

Hi Leanne, may I know how long it takes for a closed peonies to blossom in vase?
@FlowerSchool
8 жыл бұрын
Hi Shirley, A good question, but a very difficult question to answer easily. There are many factors to consider. Each peony variety opens at a different rate. And, environmental factors (about of light, ambient air temperature, water temperature, water ph) all play a part. That said, it could take a closed bud anywhere from two days to eight days to open.

I'm curious why you don't do the second cut underwater when you're arranging the display? Would this be necessary? Why or why not?
@FlowerSchool
8 жыл бұрын
+lookandsee4me The first cut is a "hydration" cut; preparing a dehydrated flower for storage in water and flower food. The second cut is a "design" cut; this is done when the flower is fully hydrated.
