Low power and high agility yea but then you got things like the gr 86 or brz for about $400 difference at msrp and and about equal the price at 30k each used same year and all the one thing I see the only thing I see the Miata has over a used boxter cayman or a newly used 86 or brz would be it’s convertible. now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying I don’t like the Miata I’m just saying it’s illogical to me when you have better options specially when you’re thinking of buying a new Mx-5 when you have older more iconic 98 and older Mx-5 for 15k or less especially if you’re thinking of the modding scene. I’ve even found independent sellers that’s sell their Miata’s for 2-5k so a newer Mx-5 doesn’t make sense to me

@@mondragonmsaul308 @mondragonmsaul308 As someone who has an NA and NB Miata, I get your point. However, the trouble with the GR86/FRS is the boxer engine. The miata has never needed improved oil baffling due to oil starvation while cornering. Unless you're pushing over 400hp, it's not needed. The GR86, however, will have a void warranty if the engine dies due to oil starvation, caused by a track day. This is despite the marketing about it being a track-ready vehicle. For this reason, the miata is more desirable than a GR86. I don't know if I would even autocross in a stock FRS/BRZ/GR86. True, this can be fixed with aftermarket parts. However, add the multi-piece head assembly, the weak head gaskets, the requirement to remove the cams to pull both heads, the hassle of a quad-cam on a 4cyl engine, AND the requirement to disconnect the pistons from the rods just to pull the engine apart. The comparison is a model of simplicity to an over complicated mess. I pulled the head on my NB with the turbo manifold and intake still attached. The camshafts were left in place as well. All the extra complexity on the boxer engine just to create a better center of gravity. The two are not even close in terms of upkeep. I see NA and NB miatas everywhere I turn. It is insanely rare to see a 90s or early 2000s WRX on the road today. That MSRP difference is just a bribe. Cheers.

Cars are getting bigger and heavier over the years. Even the Miata's closest peers have gotten much bigger in their most recent iterations. In this day and age, the Miata keeping it's small, lightweight built only emphasises more on what made it appealing in the first place.

Just like Jason Cammisa said. The affordable sportscar was perished because the enthusiasts got greedy. You have a simple 2-door coupe sportscar to start with, then the next thing they want is more power which is reached through fitting a turbo, then you have to add intercooler, give it wider wheels to accommodate the additional power, beef up the suspension, and it all adds up as a cost that the buyer has to pay. Suddenly it isn’t affordable anymore. Miata (and 86 to some extent) are still exist to this day because they don’t give what the enthusiasts want. They simply give what the enthusiasts truly need by simply keeping the original recipe.

Maybe a valid solution for more power is to perhaps make an optional factory performance package with a turbo 4 cylinder with decent power, bigger brakes and tuned suspension, maybe a factory body kit, and bigger wheels to accommodate larger brakes. So we can have both ?

Mazda did make a bigger Miata, which was the NC Miata. Using a shortened RX-8 chassis, it's the largest and heaviest Miata generation. It came stock with a modified 2.0 from a Mazda 3, but it's common to swap in a 2.5L Ford Duratec. It's still a two seater roadster, but it's pretty chunky compared to the other generations.
@KOrnhOliO1

Actually look up a comparably equipped NC vs any other Miata. Hardly any difference in weight and the NC is big enough for my 6'3" frame! Plus, you get 175hp, so it's the fastest! Not clunky at all. It also has a time wheel which is important for me getting in and out. NA and NB are fine, but no new technology! I can tell you don't own one, cuz no one who does says the NC is clunky! Just the opposite! It's the hot car for track racers now!!!

The one thing the miata needs is a coupe version. Better aerodynamics, lower weight, better chassis rigidity, much safer in a crash, etc... Mazda clearly thought of this too as they actually made just under 200 of them in the late 90s... but why not more??? It should've always been one of the standard options

It’s one of the last true bastions of the 90s era. Everything else in its category either disappeared or changed so much from their original vision that it’s hard to even compare them to Miatas anymore. Why would anyone ever want to sacrifice that legacy and kill the era of small, fun japanese cars?

Cars should be compared on price point, nothing else. MX5's are between £28K-£35K. If you're getting a car with more tech, which is bigger, and offers more power, in that price range, then go for that, because you're getting more value for your money.

I think that the appeal was customizability, with the idea that it was going to be sold in Japan and in an Era where street racing was starting If they wanted to make a Miata, they would just have to make a car that could be tuned up to easily fit more modern builds, but simply keep the "have fun" selling point

I think the only thing I'd change about the Miata is engine and drivetrain choices. For starters, rather than the 2.0L Skyactiv G, I'd offer the 2.5L variant, and give customers a choice on whether or not they want the engine turboed from factory. If not, Corksport makes a turbo kit for the Skyactivs (I helped with development back when I had my Mazda 3). I'd also make a higher price point model with the new Inline 6 turbo they use in the CX-90, and offer a limited slip diff with the inline 6 and/or an AWD drive train. These factors would effectively make it a modular, built to order car, with light fun, capability for big power, interchangeable subframes, turbo, bigger engine options, and even AWD. It would compete with everything. Mazda has the tech to do it but they're afraid of what it would do to their image if they bastardize the Miata like that (I used to be a Mazda Brand Ambassador).

The only thing I would change is a lightweight hybrid turbocharger. NOT a huge power build, a Hybrid K03 or K04 and some weight reduction to keep the balance. There is nothing wrong with the current model to be clear, except for the heavy safety equipment requirements. Thats no fault of Mazda. If you want a bigger car, then you just dont get it. Something that has changed is how powerful all cars are for the era. The miata has to compete with the BRZ/86, so I think between 200-300hp is the target, but keep the base model as another trim level. Before you keep demanding power, try driving a balanced car. You will even go down in power to have that feeling. (From a higher HP car to a lower balanced car)

I wouldn't say that it needs to be low on power, just that it should be kept nice and light. We don't want them to add heaps of weight in the process of making it more powerful, but if clever engineering can add power while keeping weight down, why not?
