Here’s a quick way to patch up small cracks, knots, or blemishes in wood with an inlay. This is an awesome alternative for times when you don’t actually need the holding power of a bowtie/dutchman/butterfly/dovetail key. The best part is that using a template makes it easily repeatable and extremely accurate for a super tight-fitting joint.
The cutting boards in this video are both made primarily of knotty alder, which is not the best choice for cutting boards and they had lots of voids that needed to be filled. The first round of patching/filling was done with epoxy, but after planing the boards down, several new cracks were exposed. I didn’t want to use more epoxy because it has a tendency to stain endgrain. So, I decided to try this method out and I’m super happy with the results. This method is definitely not limited to cutting boards.
