Persona 3 may not be my favorite game of all time anymore, but it certainly is the most important game ever for me. It taught me so many lessons on how to live life to the fullest, the importance of bonds and how to best deal with the reality of death. I played it during a very confusing and complicated time of my life and it definitely made me see things differently. I am eternally grateful for Persona 3 for all that, and your amazing analysis did the game the justice it deserved. Thank you.

Thank you. The protagonist's name flame war is almost as bad as DBZ's music score argument. The main problem is that the manga more often than not comes out at the same time as the game so people take the manga name as gospel before Atlus puts out an actual cannon one. P2 handled it the best by having a "default" button. No fuss no muss. Anyways, I disagree with the acknowledgment of past games you presented. I feel the disconnect between the two halves of the series is because simply the staff is too loyal to touch Satomi's lore rather than a different style of world portrayal based on rules. This was evidenced by the fact that even though Atlus owns the characters, they expressly went and got Tadashi's approval to do remakes of 1 and 2. On the contrary, I feel the overall world-building benefits from each cast having different rules. It allows them to effectively portray that people see the world differently from one another. For example one of my all-time favorite moments is that in the Arena games, the P3 cast has to get used to summoning their personas the P4 way. You can make it out to the P3 cast literally having to alter their worldview.
@basilofgoodwishes4138

He never said the past games should be acknowledged in fact he said that there is no point in finding a continuity and linear progression from P1 to P5, since it's all symbolic, therefore continuity sucks. He is essentially defending the continuity errors presented since P3. This is fine if you view every persona story as different worlds, but from a greater perspective, continuity is shaky at worst and non-existence at worst. That the staff is afraid of touching Satomi's work is more an excuse to change the series and ultimately doesn't disagree with your last paragraph, in fact, it supports it. I have the opposite view, a series with multiple sequels has to be true to itself and never abandon it's core values and lore, because you end up with the dumpster fire that is the Sonic games years ago and the Assassins's creed series that in their search of getting money from the success God of War and Dark Souls (two franchises taking the opposite approach from middle age Sonic and Assassin's Creed ironically), wherein they steal their mechanics. You can keep continuity and still have different protagonists and stories you can do, for instance Zelda, the Mother series and JoJo do the same thing, though the latter is not a video game. There is no need for a false dichotomy here, you can do new stuff while being true to the old stuff. That is called keeping continuity.

I always saw the decision to make the protagonist a wild card as a metanarrative tool to represent how they are the avatar of the player, i.e. they represent millions of potential people and therefor don't fall under the same rule of only holding a single Persona.

Persona 3 remains my favorite game of the series. I know it's a Debbie-Downer for a lotta gamers lol (hence, why it isn't as hyped up as Persona 5 or 4) but Persona 3 really hits you in the FEELS. Just listening to some of its soundtracks play during your analysis video made me want to cry. I played Persona 3 when it first came out during my twenties. Now, I'm a middle-aged gamer. I've lost a lotta loved ones. My body no longer feels the same. Persona 3's message is more relevant than ever for me, as I suspect it'll be for a lotta gamers who eventually grow up. Thank you SO MUCH for doing an analysis of it.

The issue with non party member control isn't that the AI is bad. The game was built around the player properly using the tactics menu and scanning the enemies. But players expected that the ai would largely make the right decisions if they just left them to their default tactics setting, or sometimes one of the more other general ones. And a part of it is also likely looking at how Persona 4 and 5 works with the AI, where there is a lot less in terms of options on how your party members act, since those games were made with player's selecting party member's actions. Obviously the reason they made the party members choose their own actions was because they wanted the player to feel like they were a person in the group and we as people can only choose our own actions. The challenge they had as developers if they wanted this was to give the player options on how to direct their allies without giving them direct control. This conveys that the party is communicating during battles, but are giving each other enough autonomy that they can work within the suggested tactics. Personally I think they did a really good job, because the alternative would have been to make the AI so competent that it would generally always take whatever action was needed with minimal player input, but this would lead to it feeling like the party is not actually communicating with each other. Instead of a team, it would come across as a bunch of random characters just happened to be in the battle together. And while direct control is more convenient, it does feel like something was lost. Persona 4 and 5 more or less contextualize this as the team leader literally telling their allies what skills to use, which kind of sucks because it makes it seem like your allies have no autonomy and therefore little to no personality in battle. But because the combat was developed with direct control in mind, you would be heavily restricting yourself and making things way harder since the AI in those games aren't as adjustable.

The way I view the persona games after the events of 2 , and introducing the lore/story of 3 itself i come to believe every game is a means to improve humanity’s overall well-being and a means to improve one’s self with each title being one step closer to that . All these games have their own interesting story’s and cast’s I love every single adventure Altus has given to us and I can’t wait for p6 in the far future . Sooner or later we’re gonna get a persona Q type of deal and a game release for home Consoles and when they do I think we’ll finally see Philemon again and all protagonists of each game make a return (All and all these are works of fiction , and I wouldn’t implement everything into irl . But saying you “can’t learn” something from these games would be a complete lie they teach common sense outside of the gods/demons/human stands brawls going on in crazy sub worlds 😂)

Another note to add in regards to Jesus parallels is that when taken from the perspective of a Gnostic Jesus the decision to make the main character's persona Orpheus just strengthens that link. Within many of the most famous forms of Gnostic Cosmology involve an emanation of God called Sophia (Nyx in this case) descending into the abyss and giving birth to the demi-urge who in turns births the material world, and traps Sophia in it as the spirit of humanity. Emanations of God in Gnosticism come in male-female couplets known as syzygies and Sophia's consort is Christ who descends to the material world (what was once the Abyss) to save her. This is quite a clear parallel with the story of Orpheus descending into Hades. The Fallen Sophia archetype appears quite a bit in Japanese media. Evangelion specifically even had its Fallen Sophia (Lilith) represented by the "Black Moon" which was her vessel and reclaims the souls of humanity. The Japanese seem to have a distinct fascination with Gnosticism (as did Jung, mind you), and I believe it has to do with its parallels with the Shinto creation myth. In the Japanese creation myth, Izanami and Izanagi were the last in a series of male-female couplet deities, much like in Gnosticism. Izanami eventually gives birth to Kagutsuchi who kills her upon his birth and signified the end of the creation of the world (and would also signal the beginning of death). Izanagi must descend into the Underworld to retrieve Izanami but, much like Orpheus, fails specifically because he looks at her. He closes off the cave to Yomi, separating life and death, as well as Izanagi and Izanami, and whilst Izanami vows to kill 1,000 people every day, Izanagi insists he will give life 1,500 people every day. So they also take on this duality of life and death.

This is a off topic but I've seen these archtypes of the sun hero in Media with the biggest one being in an Ongoing piece of media (Spoiler Warning) One Piece This archetype along with its Rebirth is seen in Luffys Power and Rebirths, with his main enemies representing the Ocean and possibly the Moon. In his fight against a man called the king of beasts he is first defeated and thrown in the water being baptised and then he is defeated again and is killed. With people commenting how they couldn't sense him anymore. He is then essentially reborn and uses his true power of the Sun God named Nika (the sound effect for smile) that is shown to come from the myths of people who came from a Moon Kingdom. His enemy that represents the ocean uses the power of darkness at the bottom of the seafloor and the power of rumbling and waves, Blackbeard. The one representing another aspect of the ocean, the man who killed his brother, uses magma. The one that might be the Moon is also the other version of the Sun representation as they run a government that is steeped in references to Christianity and see's themself as the ruler over all. They even sit on a chair that is modeled after the vatican square along with having an ability that allow them to erase and snuff people and places from history. The whole crux of the story is about Luffy's passion to sail the sea and be the freest man in the world with Pirate King being only a title to him for this end. He is also hard predict with arcana as a man who had a power to make predictions with it could never make one where Luffy would truly fail. It was also revealed that the devil fruit in the series (thats based on fruit of knowledge with there also being a Adam and Eve Tree and Tree of Knowledge in the story) come from Desire. The desire to see what a human could become. Its possible that they are made from their own tree that draws from the Collective Unconscious.

Honestly when I first played through P3 after 1-2ep I hoped that Ikutski was to be a boss. Was kind of disappointed that he didn't have a Persona. After knowing how most of the Personas (in the story) were Greek and Roman I always had thoughts of Ikutski summoning the Moirae sisters regardless if he became a boss or not. Loved his as a villain along with Strega and its Takaya.
@Daniel_Coffman

Persona 3's AI may have its flaws, but I definitely know that one part of the reason why you can't control the other characters is simply because of the isolation from others that Snickety mentioned in this video; you cannot control other people in real life. You cannot determine what they do or how they act or react. The only person you have control over in real life is yourself. There just really needs to be a way to make the AI better. However, I'm not sure whether or not that's possible without possibly also messing with the enemies' AI. However, I haven't gone into the game's code, so I don't know. I also have to wonder if perhaps Takaya may be representative of how Judaism views Jesus. Some Jewish people think that he didn't exist in the first place, but others actively think of him as a damaging false prophet.

I would llke to add that also that not only the shadows represent the downright meaning of each tarot card, but the party members, at least until they get their ultimate persona. With the exception of Shinji, Chidori, Jin and Takaya, all the characters archieve the upright meaning of the arcana, and this is also reflected in the social links, I know that there will be a future video, but all the characters at beginning of the game were downright. If we take in consideration all source material, aka movies, games and manga, Makoto was apathetic, living by the sake of living, he wasn't embracing life at all, but at the end of the game, he is the most alive of all the characters. From someone who don't care at all to someone who is capable of giving his life for all the humanity, and only because he found In SEES and the characters he met throught the games something so precious that he could'nt let it end that way.

The protagonist does not obtain the World Arcana, but the Universe Arcana. Splitting hairs, I know, but it comes from the same deck as the Aeon card: the Thoth deck. The symbolism is essentially the same, and thus I see why you gave the world arcana. Symbols, not canon right? Regardless I think its important as a way to show how the protagonist is unique among any of the Persona protagonists, before him or since him, as only he has this one great power that even Igor, the master of fusion and the Velvet Room, did not think he would ever see in his existence. Its why the card is never show in Persona 3 the game, though it would be shown as the World in the movies, and slightly by extension in Persona Q, as Messiah was retrofitted to the World arcana. Thankfully this was fixed in Q2 Fantastic video otherwise. I was super excited for you to explore the concept of death as it pertains to this game and you did not disappoint

I remeber in 2010 having just bought a used ps2 and copy of P3 FES because I watched partially through a let's play of persona 4. While alot of symbolism regarding tarot flew over my head I still enjoyed the reference to greek myth and memento mori being represented through the persona summon, characters, and the near ending game. After playing more of the series I still prefer 2's more canonical story telling, characters persona mechanics, and the rumor system and still bummed that persona series departure from it means it's highly unlikely to have another game like the P2 duology, but I guess thats why those entries are so important to me. That being said P3 being my personal introduction to series was still signifigant and remains my favorite outside of the classic series.

This was excellent. Very well done. I'm looking forward to the second part. My favorite SMT game is actually Digital Devil Saga. There's a lot to unpack there relating to the symbolism relating to Hindu beliefs and the cycle of Samsara. It's hopefully on your agenda for a deep dive in the future. The second game even has my favorite law/chaos/neutral routes, even though the game doesn't actually give you a choice. They all have good merits and represent a choice with much more moral implications than simple "law good, chaos bad" dynamics that several other SMT games have. The other game that requires disection is MONARK. While it's not a particularly "good" game from technical or gameplay perspectives, they did a lot with a small budget, and the writing and characters are complex and realistically cynical. My personal favorite is the one who spends all her time in study and reading but only has mediocre grades, since she only studies and learns out of personal curiosity, not out of a need to achieve academically. That kind of sounds like me: I spent much of my formative years in libraries and have read and retained thousands of encyclopedia entries, but went to summer school every year and was a total academic failure. School was a waste of time for me. The only benefits it held was a place to eat lunch and meet girls. I'm retired and middle aged now, and I still spend most of my time reading. I'm probably one of the most well read and least educated people you'll ever meet. Anyways, I'm a big fan of your work. Keep it up!

Been watching your videos for a few years, since the episode on P1 on the PlayStation Classic. Another excellent watch from you, your quality is top notch and your analysis is both entertaining and informative. I have loved these games ever since I played P4 Arena which drove me down the rabbit hole into playing 1,2,3,4 and then 5 when it came out. I had such an amazing experience with this series, those first 4 games remain some of the finest storytelling the medium has to offer and although they are different in style and gameplay I truly believe that 3 is a worthy successor to the Persona’s of yore. 4 and 5 remain fantastic games in their own right and in many ways are superior to the outdated combat of the originals however 3 exists in the perfect centre between the dark and intriguing storytelling and writing of the first games and the updated gameplay of the later ones, including ingenious additions like the social links and the calendar system. What a brilliant game.

I guess just 2 or 3 arcana side-chars takes around 20 minutes JUST TO EXPLAIN THE BASICS EVEN BEFORE TO TELL THEY'RE OWN STORIES!) AND THE CHARS! OH GOSH! THAT WOULD E A LENGHTY ONE! But I want also the PSP version chars pov if possible

I only found you recently, and you dropped this video just as I finished catching up on the rest of this series. Thank you!

16:56 Hey, I haven't played any Persona games because I have neither the time nor the want to play them. I struggle with finishing games a lot, and RPGs are the hardest for me to get into at all. I watch videos about them because I know I'll never actually play any of them. And... I know I won't appreciate them the same way if I did play them. Unga bunga goblin brain wants action, not thirty minute cutscenes about a story that I don't play games for.

I was wondering if you were going to mention the Remake... Of the PSP version. But... I think this video came out before the remake, so probably not

I really loved my time through P3P, then mid november, saw the "big spoiler" and then my file exploded because technology is a fun one killing my motivation for the game. but thinking back on it, if I were more earthly and knew the intro's meaning, "Memento Mori", "Remember You Will Die". Maybe it'd of spoilt the ending right there. Did my obliviousness help or hinder me? I truly wonder. Persona has been a lovely series to me, and while 1 and 2 are (literally just SMT games) I definitely think I like 3 the most.

The amount of times I screamed, “OH MY GOD YES!” When I saw this video in my recommended is a little concerning considering I woke up my family 😂

I was determined to finish Persona 3 FES before watching this, and I'm glad I did. This analysis helps to enhance the experience of the story and its elements that I otherwise never would have thought on their meaning.

I have been wanting to watch this video since I first played this game 10 years ago. Thanks for finally making it.

After watching this video, playing through P3 and watching Evangelion I feel the need to make a video explaining why Persona 3 and Evangelion have almost identical over-arching stories and symbolism.

If we are going off what you said (which I completly agree with), doesn't that mean that most of the cast are deep down really, really blunt and boring?

I couldn’t watch this until I finished p3p cause I felt like it’ll be a great disservice for me to not experience such a great game first unlike the first 2 persona game which are hard to experience for yourself man it was worth and I can’t wait to play the remake of it also great job with the vid man keep it up

Excellent video like usual. Haven't played Persona 3 since almost 10 years ago, so I think I may be due for a replay. Will be interesting comparing my own analysis and my memories of playing the game back in 2014 with some of the interesting philosophical parallels you've brought up in this video.

My favorite persona game. I watched Super Jeenius's LP of this game during high school and felt immersed in it.
