Phobe Romys Are you kidding me? Stipe is an example of a great front man. Obviously you don't understand music to realize that him and Merchant were supposed to be dwarfed by Gabriel. There's a reason they call it FEATURING. You don't try to show up the lead singer.
@JohnTaylor-it3kp

What Remgr said.. and if you don't see the artistic genius in Stipe or Merchant's own performances, you need to get your ears and heart checked. Baritone/Tenor is going to SOUND more powerful... but there's more to it than a big voice. Perhaps more importantly, why not just enjoy these great artists' collective performances? Why must one make one "better" than the others?

This is a priceless gem. The talent level is A++++++++. The best part is that all three of these great artists were hitting their peak. I love Pete Gabriel's music always have, especially the album this song comes from SO, but he's probably twice as old as Natalie Merchant and 10 to 15 years older then Michael Stipe. I love that the age gap makes no difference. This performance is magnificent, one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. the dj

I couldnt agree more. To try to put into words of the granduosity of this piece, would lead one to the infallible conclusion that not only are we not alone in this vast eternal universe, but that man is a non descript character playing in a role the likes of which all the gods are previewing, and yet at times, not only do I play the central role, but the gods interact within the play, as its being performed. A sort of inter-galactic rendition of "The rocky-horror picture show", if you will...

Pause at 3:21 and/or 3:24 and it reminds me of that picture of him yelling at the top of his lungs during the Apocalypse in 9/8 section of Supper's Ready - wearing the triangle over his head and the black cape. Sometimes it's hard to believe it's the same guy.

Nothing against Stipe as he is a truly great singer/artist. That being said, when Gabriel starts singing it’s like a high school athlete trying to keep up with a pro - just a whole different level. Add Natalie into the mix and then it just goes over the top. Amazing performance.

@greatbookie That's a little difficult to say. According to at least one source it is a reference to acid rain. As I understand it, at the time Gabriel was having a recurring dream of being in his pool drinking red wine, which was one inspiration. Early in his solo career he also had an idea for a movie called Mozo in which villagers were punished for their sins with blood red rain. This was intended to be the theme song, but the idea was scrapped.
