Its simple, the more tanks the more brake aplications you will have between compressor cycles. My truck has 9 tanks , one is a wet tank 8 are used for supply. The more axles, airbags, brakes and certain accessories the more air your going to use. the travel in the suspention, fan hub, seats all use air just about all the time. Do not reduce the amount of air tanks because you may run into problems on the road. No air = no go anywhere or might dynamite the brakes while your moving becoming a expensive repair or resulting in a fire or at the very least resulting in having to listen to the low air buzzer that will drive you crazy.

the reason you have three tanks is because you have a primary that normally runs your front axle air brakes a secondary that normally runs your rear axle air brakes and a wet tank which holds all your moisture from the system and your primary and secondary tank are two separate systems so if you lose your secondary tank you still have front brakes

You have as many tanks as the truck demands. Depends on volume required to run everything. I think I have 8 or 9 tanks between my truck and trailer. Think about a shop air compressor and how big a tank reserve for demand. But u need at least 3. Wet tank to collect moisture and then a primary and secondary tank

Might want to take some more precautions with your Acetylene tank. After they have been laying on their side they need to set upright, I usually go with 24 hours (I do not know the exact spec), so that the solvent can settle back into the porous material in the bottom of the tank. If you draw too much of the solvent out the Acetylene will become unstable and cause your tank to blow sky high!!! As for transporting it on its side, just be careful again so that you don't break the porous structure in the bottom of the tank. HAVE FUN and thank you for the great videos!

Hey buddy. Sometime try NX gas, it's propane with something added. Much more stable than acetylene, there isn't the requirement to keep the tank upright like with acetylene and of course isn't the explosive potential with too high of pressure usage, you don't have the pressure limit of 15 psi or whatever it is. You can use your torch you already have. You have to have a particular kind of hose because the propane is more caustic to the hose and it requires a propane tip for the torch. I use it now instead of acetylene and I love it.

You have a primary an secondary system, the air goes from compresser to dryer, then supplies primary then secondary, brakes are primary, caban suspension are secondary, you can eliminate a secondary tank, many trucks only have 1, but def need 2 for primary

About your roof! you're in a perfect situation to "unibilt" the new flat cab cap to accomodate the wider seal of the unibilt cab. simply cut out the hole wider for the top to match the existing seal on the sides. The end product, the top should look exactly like the bottom does. You just need to "unitbilt" your sleeper now which is a very popular mod guys do with those sleepers so they can slide their seats back to the bed. It will have a narrower walk through seal that you just need to widen to match your new unibilt seal. This is actually a very very good conversion you're doing with the roof as the flat cab tops are alot more desirable right now than the ultracabs. With the "unibilt" modification that just adds the cherry on top for even better resale value as well

Most trucks came with 3 tanks the primary witch the compressor goes to that builds air then feeds the other 2 they have check valves to keep air from going back into the primary tank some trucks were order with a 4 tank they use that for the air horn so you don't lose air to quick and the relay valve above the rear axle witch is the service brake when you step the brake pedal to stop and to activate the parking brake as well

U probably need all of them, 2 probably do the brakes, 2 probably do suspension, or however. U gotta chase main line back to compression, then see how they branch off each tank to the valves. Brakes, suspension, if u go to Pete dealer they can look up the vin # and give u a build sheet of air valves, tanks, ect. Pretty easy to figure out with print out and seeing it in front of you. Pete had those nice tank mounts they used on Dumptrucks, it would stack 3-4 tanks like behind the step or fuel tank and they look decent. U only see the small side looking at side of truck, cause they mount side to side. Not front to back like u have

You need a ring and roof support, you can modify the roof support, if thats how you want to do that, but that ring in the back is the cabs back bone. It ties everything together in the back portion of the cab, don't modify it, get the correct one and go about swapping. Id recommend the correct roof support too, but like I said you can modify the one you have now but to each their own.

In its most generic form, air brakes need two tanks; one for front brakes, and one for rear brakes, but it is not uncommon to have a small tank after the water separator, but before the metering / safety device. It is also normal to have a separate air system for suspension use, and one for cab / seat suspension. When you are going to plumb up the truck, find the brake valves on the internet, they are likely BENDIX and they have diagrams for all the connections, on a separate website for each valve they make.

The air coming from the dryer is the “wet tank” it’s mostly to prevent the moisture in the air from reaching the air system. That’s why it should be drained daily. That’s what the pull cables are for. Once the air is free of moisture it goes to the other tanks for the braking system. Not familiar with Peterbilts but the trucks I work on typically have 3 tanks
@brandoncaldwell95

Air system: minimum of two tanks, one primary and one secondary. The reason for 4 tanks is the volume of air needed to supply all the air stuff. Like air ride cab, air suspension on truck and trailer, brakes.... The air tank should have internal check valve in the inlet, so the of flow is important to note. Far as the cab. I would check with the Daycab Company, 4 State Truck, or Vander Haag, for a sleeper ring frame. Just my opinion.

Only the good lookin forces. The badass lookin forces. Never buy the ridiculous American Force rims. The ones on the first gen and the rest of your trucks look awesome. I have similar American Force Rims on my 2018 Dodge Ram 3500 dually... I have one too. Awesome truck love that so much. When it was stock it was amazing. It’s tuned to around 625hp and it’s got a bigger single turbo in it. The turbo is kinda loud which I like a lot and it does roll coal, but it’s a tow rig and my daily driver. I also own a 97 2500 12 valve Cummins. That was my first vehicle I bought when I was a junior back in highschool a couple years back. I bought it for 3000$ in decent condition, it had rust (typical old dodges) and a little bit of other problems and with the engine. Me and my uncle fixed it up and then we built it. Thing is twin turbo, big cam, all the good shit. She’s making a small bit over 900hp. It’s got a nice lift, big tires and rims and all that good stuff that makes it look mean. It’s black, got twin chrome stacks in the bed (love me some old dodges with stacks in the bed looks awesome) it’s quick fast, got a manual transmission. It’s so fun. Love that truck, love old dodge 12 valves. It’s a king bed single cab. It was white before we painted it black. It’s a badass ride. Dodges are awesome. Hell yeah 🤘🏼

I would just cut that overhead console down to where the new roof cap will fit overtop. Then you can decide if you want to go with a new factory panel or use that one or make a custom one. Then you could put the roof cap back on and figure it out as time allows, really wouldn't be any different than how it's tarped up now. All thats up there anyway is the radio and a couple overhead consoles (I'm not sure if the flat tops have the storage pockets or not, I know they are different than that style of cab tho). Since you're building a custom truck anyway it might be cool to do something custom up there the way you want it and then have a new interior panel made up.

Air tanks are both primary and secondary air systems, every tank is required for the braking systems. And those tanks are about $800 each, so don't be dismissive with them. Speak with a dealer, they make a piece to go into the boc when you are changing a sleeper truck to a day cab. If you are going to take the top off, first thing you need to do is get a huck rivet gun. I'd use what you have and order the correct part accordingly to convert to a day cab. Standard part. Opps, just at the end I see you want to convert to a single bunk Get a huck rivet gun.

On 18 wheelers there is a primary and secondary air system. From the compressor, the hot line goes to the air dryer first. From the dryer it goes to the supply tank. The supply tank will most often catch any moisture the air drying does not. In very humid climates the air dryer will not catch all of it. From the supply tank it then goes to the primary and secondary tanks. //Edit - Forgot to add this first time around. You do not need 4 tanks but it would not hurt to leave the 4th one there. In this case, both of the smaller tanks are the supply tanks coming off of the air dryer. Notice they are lower than the big tanks( primary and secondary systems) as a last chance to catch water before it can make it in to the air system. The lines going to the front supplies the front brakes, air supply for the cab and eventually to the trailer. The line going to the ABS Relay, back by the drives, is the high pressure supply feed. When you press on the brake pedal, pressure is applied to the control side of the relay and actuates a diaphragm. As the diaphragm opens, air from the high pressure supply is then sent to the chambers to actuate them.

Hey I couldn't help to notice how you set the gauges on your torches, just figured I'd let you know that your supposed to open the OXYGEN tank all the way and regulate between 35-40 PSI and then ACCETLYN open ONLY 1/4 of a turn and then regulate between 5 -8 ( 7 ideal) PSI

Just an FYI on oxyacetylene: you should never open the acetylene valve more than 1 full turn, recommend about 3/4 turn. And for pressure specs, you should never need more than 5 psi of hose pressure for acetylene. 5psi with only 3/4 turn of the valve is plenty enough to cut over 3/8” thick steel. Oxygen, you should probably run at about 30 psi, and you can open the valve all the way.
