In this Video Lecture, Professor Fink describes the 3 classes of "Corticosteroids" (Mineralocorticoids, Adrenal Androgens & Glucocorticosteroids). Emphasis is placed on the physiological actions of the endogenous Glucocorticosteroids (such as Cortisol) and the pharmacological uses of synthetic Glucocorticosteroids (such as prednisone, triamcinolone, fluticasone, etc). The principal adverse effects are described (including hyperglucocorticosteroidism: Cushing's Disease & Cushing's Syndrome). Reference is made to gluconeogenesis, lymphocytopenia, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressant, ACTH, stress, Addison's Disease, moon face, adrenocortical suppression, adrenal insufficiency syndrome, and non-infectious oral lesions.
