GPs and their practice teams are being asked to help ensure that patients who have a serious mental illness are encouraged to take up their annual physical health check.
People who have:
• schizophrenia
• bipolar disorder
• psychotic disorder
• severe depression
are at a higher risk of developing physical health issues, compared to everyone else.
The physical health covers:
• blood pressure
• height & weight
• blood sugar
• blood cholesterol
• smoking consumption
• alcohol consumption
It is an important opportunity to identify the potential risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory or liver disorders.
Where necessary the GP can then intervene, for example by offering advice, or making a referral to other services.
