This is the BEST video on this subject. I have long believed addiction must play into the ancient survival system. It takes a lot of strength for hunter/gatherers living on the edge of starvation, to get up and go hunting, fishing or gathering. For thousands of years life was tough for people. Understanding the biology of learning can show us a lot about addictive states, I think.

Th perpetual irony is that when work is one of your additions, you come home and supplant that addiction with a whole gamut of addictions: e.g. alcohol, junk food, watching news reports on TV, electronic devices, gossiping about people with your loser mates, watching sport, complaining about stuff, Netflix, and so on.

Concerning underage drinking and risk for future addiction, some believe that the legal drinking age contributes to future problems. By making alcohol illegal for underage, when the under-aged get alcohol, they binge. This was very true in my teen years in the 60s & 70s and today there is a problem with college age binge drinking. Perhaps if alcohol use was normalized at a younger age such as it is in some European countries, then first time young drinkers would not link alcohol consumption with sneaking, law breaking and guzzling until drunk. Lots of teens who drink see alcohol this way. Even when the legal age is attained there is a strong feeling for many that now is the time to cut loose and drink as much as possible. I think the late drinking age does more harm than good.

Of course the grandmas wanted the press release blaming drugs for the death of their granddaughter- that gives them the easy out; they maintain their "virtue". The REAL cause of their granddaughter's addiction : - the paradigm of familiar abuse and neglect of which they are wholly responsible for!

Agree with you. I’ve said that about diabetes. Why don’t we blame them for eating high glycemic diet?

I think her point is that we need to stop blaming people and start helping them instead.

I find it interesting that a single case study of 38 people took the forefront over centuries of knowledge that derivatives from opium could be addictive. I have heard this argument before and it seems to be a fallacy, diverting the blame from the doctors that prescribed addictive chemicals, to one case study.

Something that I have difficulty accepting is the idea that alcohol use in teens leads to problems. Historically, say the dark to middle ages in Europe, everyone, including children, drank ale or other fermented beverages. It was part of the dietary calorie intake. The water was not safe to drink. Some have suggested these were low alcohol brews perhaps comparable to Russian kvas but historians now believe these drinks probably contained at least 3% and maybe more alcohol. Even so, these young people grew up and were successful members of society.

Anna Morris These dark ages alcohol consumptions were not in excess. Maybe one drink of (up to 3% at a time). Dr. Potee is talking more about “binge drinking” over a period of time.

NOT A DISEASE! anyone who states any addiction is a disease has never INVESTIGATED the root cause of addiction. it is a necessary piece of genetic programming which forms RECOGNITION.
