Well, howdy, it's Wendy. And on today's episode, I'm exploring how to pick your line.
You know, in the 80s, that was a completely different thing. I knew that you were going to have some comeback with that. I was like, "How could I word it so it's not?" Now I forget it. Nobody's ever... It's really how it needs to be. Nobody's ever safe here. You know this. No, I know that. That's right. All right. So let's get started with this. "When were you new?" And I was thinking about this today. This is something that I think every Jeep, or really even any off-road show, should think about sometimes. For the people that are brand new to the whole jeeping thing, we need to be able to make those people feel a little more comfortable about their Jeep. And not necessarily going off road, but just about their Jeep. I mean, there's stuff about the Jeep that you don't know, and they don't teach you. They don't have a class anywhere that you can take. I mean, there's the owner's manual. Fortunately, there's KZitem and online stuff, but it can be very confusing. I mean, there's an extra lever there that you can work, and you don't want to break anything. And you literally can break something by using that lever incorrectly. I mean, the other things that can break things too, but this isn't something that you watch your parents drive and use in most cases. In most cases. And so there's this lever. And what do you do with this lever? At the same time, we had the Jeep talk show. We also had the newbie nugget section. So they are learning things. Oh yeah, absolutely. But I guess what I'm saying here is what is the best thing to teach these people and how often do you do you repeat it? Because there's new people listening to the show all the time. All the time. Yeah. So if I go back in time, when I was new to Jeeps or really any four-wheel drive, what didn't I know and how do I find out? And this is this, they started for me before there was the internet. So it wasn't even as easy to just kind of trying to come up with the right search term to find this stuff on the internet. Yeah. You had to ask friends or see what they were doing. Yeah. I had no friends with four-wheel drives. So yeah, I mean, I was the first one. So yeah, it was up to me. So I started with a four by four 1983 Chevrolet pickup truck, short-wheel base. Doesn't matter, but I just like seeing that because I think the short-wheel bases look better. I bought it new and I still don't remember how I found out when you win and when you don't lock the front hubs and put the transfer case in four-wheel drive. Well, first off, you lock the hubs. If you're going to use four-wheel drive, because it's kind of pointless. Otherwise, I know I'm telling people here that don't know what I'm talking about.
And anyway, I was, and then I don't know how I found out that you're not supposed to drive around in four-wheel drive on pavement. Yeah. On regular stuff. Yeah. Sidewalks included. So, you know, you could damage the drive train. More than likely, you'd pop a U-joint on the axle shaft, but several things could happen by doing that.
I'm not even going to talk about the, you know, there was a new technology in 1983, Wendy. It was automatic locking hubs. Oh, yay. You did not have to get out to... To lock them. To turn little thing on the end of the axle. And you guys may have seen some of these things because this was the way you did it back before 1983. And then there were other vehicles out there that did it even after that. And you can still do that if you want to put a kit in. But anyway, I didn't have to get out to lock the hubs. And for the life of me, I can't remember. It seems like what I had to do was put it in four-wheel drive and drive... Yeah, this is right. And drive forward. And I had to roll the windows down both sides because you had to listen for two clicks. The quick click.
And if you didn't hear two clicks, you know, that means one was locked and the other side wasn't, and damage could occur. So then you'd have to take it out of four-wheel drive and back up and wait to hear one or two clicks. This is like engaging or disengaging. So there was several times. And so it wasn't just a pull it and go or slow down, put your shifter in your automatic or standard, in neutral and put it in four-wheel-low and go. It was something that you had to work at to make it happen. But anyway, I thought the automatic thing was really cool, but frankly, I would have just rather gotten out and twisted the hubs and locked it. Make it easier. And know it was locked.
