Thanks for your video. I've had the same issue. They sent the control board but it still didn't work. They sent me the temperature probe. Now I have to take the unit apart AGAIN to replace that piece. Wouldn't it be great if they sent both parts at the same time? Yes, it would - Pitboss ... Listen to your customers and just do this. It's saves so much frustration. So for those of you watching this great video, order both parts and don't take not for an answer. Replace both while you have the unit taken apart. Women, you can do this. Because of this video and another for the temp probe, I did this on my own and so can you. When this unit works, it's so great!!

THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING PIT BOSS. Thanks for this well done video. Another video of yours saved me hours of work and a great deal of frustration. First issue I had was having to replace the internal heat probe. Now the control panel. Buying my Pit Boss Copperhead smoker was one of the worst purchasing decision in several years. Yes there is a 5 year warrantee but Pit Boss won’t repair or replace the unit. Instead they ship the replacement parts to swap out with the original faulty parts, and then leave it to the owners to figure out how to remove and replace these parts. I bought my Copperhead in August, used it first the end of September. Third time I used it I started getting the ER1 code displayed. Recently the smoker shut down in the middle of an overnight smoke. I lost $80.00 worth of porch shoulders.

I agree, mine messed up within the first month of use. which is why i ended up replacing these parts. I don't like that they don't send any instructions with the parts either. I guess they expect everyone to know how to do this...That is exactly why I made these videos! I'm glad they helped you out, but I hate that its this common to replace these parts..

This was a lifesaver, tt took over a month to get my panel from PitBoss and I totally forgot how to reassemble everything! I replaced the probe first but still got the error. To put everyone's mind at ease, the grounding wire for the new replacement panels do not require and modifications.

Dude, this is an excellent video. I'm sure I could have figured out how to do this on my own - but I trust your skills, and wanted to be sure there weren't any surprises. BTW, the four zip ties are necessary to keep the wires as far away from the heat as possible , so they shouldn't be skipped. Thank you for your time. I have definitely subscribed.

Also, butt connectors are the best way to make a splice, but with 18 Gauge wire, a good tight twist with a bit of electrical tape will suffice, especially since it will be covered with the heat guard wire sock.

Really top video. It shows how badly designed this unit is. Control panels have to be replaced sometimes. It should be a five minute job. This was put together like the control would never going to be replaced, using connectors that invite blowing up the electronics. Crap product Pit Boss. This was enough to turn me off buying one. Thanks for the heads-up.

It wasn't too difficult to change it, my main concern was that it didn't come with instructions. So I wanted to help people by showing how to change it out. @Catshart34

@ 18:27 you mention you using an extension cord. Using an extension cord is reducing the potential maximum current the ignitor needs to work properly, especially if it's a small gauge cord. This could potentially cause temperature swings because the sensitive electronics in the controller need a constant amperage. I'm sure there is a built in voltage regulator in the board, but it won't work properly without the proper minimum current. Also, you're risking a potential fire if the extension cord isn't rated for the draw. If you're using an extension cord, feel the plug at the outlet; if it's hot, you're drawing too much current from that outlet. I always move my smoker close enough to the outlet so a cord isn't necessary, or I'll run a new outlet from the nearest GFCI with 12/2 Romex to make a dedicated outlet. Love the video up to this point though.

My smoker heated up to 547 and I think melted elements in the control board. I saw melted plastic coming out and it smells like melted plastic. And the unit won't turn on. Sound about right?Will be using this video to replace. What control board unit did you purchase? I see the official one on PB.com (currently out of stock) and some knock-offs on Amazon. Can you share the link you used?

Yea mine went way too high also, I had it set on 250 and it got up to 450 before shutting down. I can send you a link to one on amazon, but I called the pitboss help line and they sent me a new control panel and an rtd sensor (temperature probe). He said it could be either one. So I made a video for both in case it's not the control panel.

Great video for the diy people. Have you had any issues with the smoker spiking in temperature? Mine, (copperhead series) will cook fine and then after a few hours or so, flames will shoot out of the sides of the box that’s over the pot and the temp will shoot up to 350 and then drop to 170. Thick white smoke will fill up inside and then shoot back up to 350ish. I try cooking at 225 or 250. Pit boss sent me a new probe and a controller, but the controller is on back order. Just curious if you or anyone is experiencing the same issue
@BuildStuffwithAJ

I've been experiencing several problems with mine. I think it's the style smoker it is. They sent me the control board. And the thermostat to replace. Now its giving a different code and the heat is spiking way high and shutting off. On the other hand my dad has the grill style smoker from pit boss and hasn't had a single problem and he's had it going on 4 years now. I think it's a design flaw with the cabinet style smokers.

That's what I thought at first too. Unfortunately that's not always the case. When I called pit boss support they asked if I cleaned the auger, I told them I did.
