What is wrong with your soil, it looks good to me? Good idea about putting gravel around the irrigation tube but how long will it take for dirt to get into gravel and clog the hose. I'm planting a small fig orchard near Presidio,Texas, it is very hot desert so I'm still experimenting with different ideas, I would like the plant the main "biblical" plants like pomegranates, figs, dates, olives, grapes and pistachios. Hello! Thanks for your interest in my channel! Perhaps the soil is not bad, but I do not like it, although I did not do the analysis. I plant all my trees and bushes in my homemade mix to be sure of success. The holes in the tube do not clog for a long time - I have been using this method for the third year now, but so far I have not seen water stagnate in a tube fixed above the surface of the pit. I hope this method can be useful in your arid region as well. Sincerely, Figs in Israel

Do you find this encouraging the roots to grow deep instead of spreading out shallow?
@figsinisrael1043

Hello! I have not yet dug up figs planted in this way, and I cannot say with accuracy about the distribution of fig roots in different depth horizons. But it is obvious that supplying water from above and below gives a better chance for uniform absorption of moisture by the roots. In addition, this reduces the risk of roots searching for water in sewer pipes laid deep in the area, penetrating them and clogging them. Sincerely, Figs in Israel

Most interesting. I live in South Australia and so I am interested in water conservation. I have not seen the ‘spiders’ here - they look really useful so I will see if I can track them down. We have drippers and use mulches but I can see that your system for getting water under the surface would further reduce evaporation and make water use more efficient. We generally have low humidity and many months of evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation. We use wicking beds for vegetables to avoid tree root competition and to reduce water use. I prefer to grow things in the ground but have to adapt to a changing garden! One question. Have you found that your figs roots grow out into the surrounding soil with this system or do they circle around to stay in your fertile potting mix? We have clay where I live so I would worry that it would be too great a difference btw the soil mix and surrounding soil for the roots to spread well. I have not grown figs and maybe not an issue as I gather they are robust.

Hello! I think it is not so important how water is supplied to the surface of the soil - through a spider or from a dropper on a tube. Evaporation from the surface can be reduced by mulching the soil with a special material. It's great that your wick growing method allows you to reduce water consumption and competition for it! I can't confidently answer your question - I haven't transplanted my figs from the watered planting hole shown in the video, and I can't tell how much of the roots go beyond it. Figs are a tree with a powerful root system that grows even on rocks. And I think the roots can spread beyond fertile soil without suffering from it. The main thing for fig roots is the presence of water. And to the source of water, fig roots can actively grow underground meter by meter. Sincerely, Figs in Israel

Your graft is a bit low. There is danger that the scion will grow roots and bypass the rootstock. As far as your irrigation method... Wow. Israelis are masters of water management. Best regards from neighboring Cyprus.

Hello! Thanks for your interest in my channel! Yes, there is such a possibility, but it's not scary - the plant will be supplied with two root systems at the same time, having received a quick initial start from the powerful roots of the rootstock.

Interesting method! I live in a similar climate in Southern California, in the U.S. I have rodent problems too; they frequently chew through my 1/4” drip tubing, AND they eat right through the organza bags that protect my fig fruits from ants and birds. Do you have similar problems? Any suggestions?

Hello! Thank you for your interest in my channel! Luckily, the rodents in my garden do not harm my watering system and the ripening figs. Perhaps the fruits of olives, cherry plums and pears that have fallen to the ground in the gardens of my neighbors are enough for them. Therefore, unfortunately, I have no experience in rodent control that I can advise. Sincerely, Figs in Israel

שלום לך. יש לי שאלה:מדוע אתה קורא לעץ ששתלת שתילון? I want to ask a question: why do you call the tree you planted in the video a seedling?
@figsinisrael1043
Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for your interest in my videos! Perhaps seedling is not the best term for a young plant grown from a cutting, but I think it's not so important. The main thing is that you did not have any questions on the main topic, which means that everything is quite clear there!)) Best wishes, Figs in Israel

Hello! In fact, there is nothing difficult here. Making an underground tube takes 15 minutes, and we plant a fig tree for many years, or for life. Gardeners in hot regions have been doing drip irrigation from above for a long time and for many plants - this is also not a problem. Try it! Sincerely, Figs in israel
