Versus Mode (exclusive to console) was a mode I never even knew existed until recently, and it was so cool. You and another person split the lawn, two thirds for plants, one third for zombies. You placed sunflowers and plants to try and destroy three targets guarded by zombies, or, you placed tombstones and zombies to try and invade the house guarded by plants. The other side tried to accomplish their goal before your side accomplished your goal. The mode was horribly unbalanced, but for the casual player, its a lot of fun. The PvZ 2 Arena Mode just isn't the same. You don't interact with your opponent at all, plant levels and exclusive plants make that mode feel very pay-to-win, and no one gets to play as zombies. It's such a huge step-down from PvZ 1 Vs Mode.

I'd say that's the one thing about PvZ1 that stands out a lot for most people: the charm. A lot of the same things that make it seem aged are also the same things that give it its character. While I think PvZ2 is more fun in a lot of aspects, I'd also say it's very un-fun in just as many. 2 has more plant variety and more ways to challenge the player, but in a lot of cases it feels like they go overboard and it makes the game feel bloated and busy, and that can easily kill a person's motivation to play. 1 isn't complex by any means, but it's not meant to be in my opinion. It's a game you go back for the chill vibes and silly atmosphere.

Overall solid points. One note I have bout the "Lock and key" part of the game is that a LOT of the plants actually end up serving one or two purposes most, ending up being nothing more than tools. There are a grand total of 14 tool plants that either serve very specific, niche purposes or are only usable in just 1-2 stages. (You could technically count sun shroom for 15, since it's only really valuable at night) This doesn't sound like much, but having basically 1/4 of the plant pool be nothing but rarely used tools really cuts down on the amount of actually versatile and fun plants in the game, as can be seen for example with the lack of variety in consistent attacking plants, which in turn reduces amounts of variable strategies and cuts down on the replayablitiy of the game.
@dylantoney6971
2 жыл бұрын
Sun shroom being only valuable should not count, and lily pad and flower pot add depth that I think should not be undermined. Something like a sea shroom is used a lot less effectively, and is almost always outclassed for the adventure(asiding challenge runs and speedruns).
@tmtmagicasquirrel3528
2 жыл бұрын
@@dylantoney6971 While I agree with this, the overall point was that having so many niche plants really cuts on the amount of solid strategies that can be used compared to the second game, which, while also having tool plants, has plenty of variety in terms of strategy since the tool plants there barely occupy about 5-10% of the plant pool compared to the near 20% here. And that's just tool plants, not counting plants that can't really be used/are extremely inefficient outside of their designated areas of use, like the before mentioned sea shroom.

PVZ1 has a lot of general shenaniganery with situational plants, almost to a fault, even among the plants that aren't obvious solutions to obvious problems. Some of it is legitimately interesting, as it should be but other parts feel less so. Rooftop seems to mostly just exist to invalidate shooter plants. Mushrooms are dominant at night, but aren't worth using during the day in Adventure mode. (Especially since you don't get Coffee Bean until you're nearly halfway through the last world) You can place ground plants in the pool, but there's no way to plant pool plants outside of the pool. That being said, I don't think this is a hugely terrible thing, especially for adventure mode, because it does continually push you to use better/different plants. And you absolutely should be forced to do that in a game like this. But it definitely adds to the replayability issues you mentioned. It also does enhance the extra modes, since once you have all the tools it's a lot more fun to go back and use the newer stuff to make new strategies for older levels, mostly because the newer levels are more restrictive and as such have less room for unique strategies. But even with all that, it's hard to shake the feeling that even some of the non-tool PVZ1 plants are meant to have a "Lock and key" element to them, as in they're designed to hard counter one specific type of zombie. This isn't great, but it's not bad either, and it's definitely where the plant design of the future starts to take shape.

Not sure if anyone’s already posted on this issue, but the reason the game appears crusty on full screen is the same reason gambit emulated screens appear somewhat crusty when expanded to a different resolution. i watched this video, and i 100% respect your views and opinions, but i personally think plants vs zombies has aged perfectly. im not saying any of this from a nostalgia blinded perspective, but i think the lock and key mechanic works well for being a casual game, plus it becomes so much more of a challenge in survival endless, where your planting space becomes much more limited. i also think that judging a game by difficulty pretty much comes down to personal preference, and i find my self to be a sucker for relaxed yet fun games. about the zombie uniqueness problem you had, i definitely see where you are coming from, but i personally never noticed this issue while playing the game. And on a last note, yeah i think zombies on your lawn is a masterpiece due to nostalgia that i feel while listening to it, but i also think it’s a perfect and sweet way to end off a simple and fun adventure ;). plants vs zombies is and will continue to be my personal favorite game of all time for various reasons. I prefer PvZ1 to its sequel because it’s a complete experience with its own sense of style that fulfills the objectives it set out to do. While it’s excessively easy, it has a campaign that was made with a sense of progression in mind and a simple but effective plot. There’s a reason Zomboss’ battle in this game is still the most memorable in the series. Crazy Dave is also emblematic of the game’s sense of humour and his appearance in this game is the reason he’s so beloved by fans, since he was flanderised into an idiot that causes the main plot to happen in PvZ2. The side content is clearly the highlight of the game as it helps bring variety to the gameplay and offers a good challenge sometimes. While PvZ2 refined the gameplay substantially, it’s hard to shake off the feeling that the series suffered from lack of direction after the first game

I will start first with this. I really enjoyed your perspective. You really approached the retrospective review with a critical mindset evaluating the game by its merits in terms of engagement and how it measures to the direction the franchise has taken, albeit unofficially. Many simply gloss over the gameplay and focus on the personality and the nostalgia it brings. But I have to say there are some merits that you missed and some of your comments about the "lock and key" game design need to be further contextualized. It is true that PvZ 1 is romanticized due to PvZ 2 being restricted to a mobile platform and falling to the usual trappings of mobile games such as being overly grindy, filled with filler levels and pushing pay to win microtransactions. Placing a monetary barrier over premium plants is a criminal offense and is part of the reason why the PvZ 2 modding scene is so prominent. But I do feel like some of your criticism is unwarranted. The "lock and key" design philosophy may feel passive and uninteresting but it does hinder you. The umbrella does use up space. The balloon zombie does require you to either use up space for a cattail plant or to sap some of your sun constantly for blover. These on their own don't ammount to much given how easy Adventure mode is. But I'd compare it to a long drawn out tutorial for Endless mode where most gimmiks do play a significant role and hinder you heavily in organizing your perfect defense. The umbrella occupies a crucial space that could be used for another plant and Endless is actually difficult so it actually matters. And it's impressive how tight and compact the game is. Quite well designed. I'm not familiar with PvZ 2 well enough so don't quote me on this, but with the scale it has, I can't imagine it has an endless mode that features every type of zombie featured in the game. Given how reliant PvZ 1 is on gimmiks, it's even more impressive. Though the Jack-in-the-Box zombie adds an annoying RNG element and can fuck off. The Magnet Shroom is unfortunately too weak in PvZ 1 without the plant food. Another very significant thing you failed to mention is that in the case of PvZ, less is more. It has less levels than PvZ 2, less zombies than PvZ 2, less plants than PvZ 2 which should be to its detriment but instead it works to its benefit. It makes everything more memorable. It does help that they are all very well designed and distinct. But fact of the matter is you get so overwhelmed with content in PvZ 2(a lot of it inconsistent) that nothing really sticks. Now there is less content, but the game is explicitly designed for it to hold more weight. I can't believe you didn't mention the incrible sound design and catchy music. Not only do the sound effects make the act of planting and hearing your defense in action really satisfying, but the music makes the slow monotonous levels actually feel very relaxing and chill. It's kind of unfair to fault a casual game for being casual instead of a mod meant to challenge the player. But the slow pace does make building the defense feel more satisfying. In PvZ 2 the levels often feel too short for you to really build a satisfactory defense and revel in it. Eclise amended that. Also an unexpected advantage of the overuse of basic enemies is that when unique zombies do show up in adventure mode they truly feel special and like a momentous occasion. This might not help engagement but it does provide an impactful experience. The game might be too casual but it made it incredibly accessible to a very large audience as a result. Kids get into PvZ and grow really attached as a result. And veterans get to enjoy endless mode which provides more of a challenge. But I will say that 'the lack of variety' during adventure mode because the game pushes you to use certain plants is unfair. For one, the game continuously introduces new plants and provides environments that encourage you to use them. Shroom plants aren't useable on day time levels because they are designed to be cheap so they are useable in an environment where there is no natural sunlight. It's similar to Doom Eternal as restriction actually encourage you to use more plant. Sure some plants aren't very exciting like cabbage pult, but the restriction really do help give each area you play personality. The game is quirky and goofy and it does stretch its concept to cover wild shit like zombotani, zombie aquarium, Izombie etc. but it's still quite grounded. You are still just a normal person who is fighting for his life against a horde of zombies out for his brain only using some mutated plants his crazy neighbour. There is an underplayed horror element that makes the experience have a level of immersion. It's helped by the overthetop hand that burts from the soil in front of the grave and the exaggerated scream and large gooey letters of doom you receive after losing telling you they've eaten your brain. It might be very goofy but it used to scare me as a kid. Such details are very underplayed in PvZ 2 which is a shame since these details are what let to PvZs unquantifiable charm. Not to mention how victorious and momentous it felt every time you earned a new plant. PvZ 2 just doesn't have that. Sometimes the devil really is in the details and how things are portrayed. The zombies were also given a lot of personaity in the letters they'd send you and the endgame music video. Another thing lost in PvZ 2. PvZ really does feel like a parody of the zombie genre. While PvZ 2 was very wacky and crazy for the sake of content and gameplay to the point it neglected what made PvZ special. It's charm and endless personalty coupled with the relaxing experience it provides. I know i mentioned that casual reviewers do overplay the personaity card when reviewing but it is really what made PvZ special. And I must say, for a good reason. PvZ really was a lighting in a bottle and already perfect in its imperfections that it didn't need a sequel. But the sequel we got is good in its own right and the mods it spawned are joyous to play. But i prefer to treat it less as a sequel and more as a reboot since it didn't expand on what made PvZ special instead opting to take the series in an entirely different direction. At least it has an identity and had effort put into it unlike PvZ 3 which is a lazy mess which doesn't know what it wants to be

Interesting even if I basically disagree on you points on pvz 2 (removing monetization imo is the bare minimum a mod needs to do so it's not impressive, the bigger issue was leveling imo and why pre leveling is great). I also think that pvz 2 levels are really memorable because of the world gimmicks and set conditions that help the game a lot. I also don't think pvz 2 went in a different direction more that it went in the same direction but it evolved personally. There is also stuff like the difficulty that make pvz 2 a more enjoyable game. PVZ 1 probably is better especially after leveling but I would say pre leveling was great and beats pvz 1

After finally beating both PvZ 1 and 2, I honestly much preffer the first one. 2 is way faster, zombies are more agressive, and overall you have to be more active; none of these are bad of course, I just much preffer the slower pace of the first one, building a defense that after the first half of a level can mostly do the job for you.

I agree, because when you beat an endless level in PVZ1, it saves the progress of that level, allowing you to continue it with fresh new plants to spruce up the lawn defense. Unlike PVZ2’s, where it just resets and you’d have to start from square one. (Quite a shame, because it has ALL those unique plants)

I've been playing on and off (mainly off) for around seven years, and I really like both pvz1 and pvz2, however pvz1 levels just drag out and feel unnecessarily long. Still, it's a very good game and way ahead of its time mechanically. I replayed it recently and I only died once: To Dr. Edgar Zomboss near the end because of a zombie rush in a lane that conveniently had just been destroyed by zombies.

One of my biggest nitpicks with Plants Vs Zombies, and the reason why I see PVZ2 as good as or better than PVZ1, is how optimized the sequel is and the first isn't. For example: In PVZ1, a zombies corpse acts as a hitbox and can block shots. This isn't bad for plants like Melon Pult, Pea plants shooting through Torchwood, and instants. But others like Kernel Pult suffer. On the topic of hitboxes, a zombie's hitbox is too small. This is especially obvious with Starfruit and Spikeweed. Each can only hit 2 to 4 times when in their range. Finally is the plant balancing, while not done perfect in PVZ2, some of that can be chalked up to the higher difficulty and the amount of plants. However, PVZ1 has no excuse. So many plants are too weak or too powerful, here is a list of all of them; D1. Peashooter is fine D2. Sunflower is fine D3. Cherry Bomb is fine D4. Wall-nut is fine D5. Potato mine is fine D6. Snow Pea is fine D7. Chomper is too weak and is only useful in levels with few zombies D8. Repeater is fine N1. Puff Shroom is too overpowered, you can literally beat all of the night and fog stages with out Sun producers N2. Sun shroom is fine in night, but weak otherwise N3. Fume Shroom is fine N4. Grave Buster is Grave buster N5. Scaredy Shroom is fine N6. Hypno Shroom is niche at best N7. Ice Shroom is fine N8. Doom Shroom is fine P1. Lily Pad is Lily Pad P2. Threepeater is fine, but needs to always cost the same as 3 Peashooters P3. Tangle Kelp is Tangle Kelp P4. Squash is fine P5. Spikeweed is weak due to the hitbox problem P6. Jalapeno is fine P7. Tall-nut is fine P8. Torchwood is really strong, mainly due to the splash damage F1. Sea Shroom is too weak due to it's very long recharge F2. Plantern is Plantern F3. Cactus is terrible, a more expensive Peashooter with no upside F4. Blover is Blover F5. Split Pea is fine, but needs more zombies to be used against F6. Pumpkin is fine F7. Starfruit is weak by itself, but strong when spammed F8. Magnet Shroom is fine R1. Cabbage Pult is fine, but the hitbox problem weakens it R2. Flower Pot is Flower Pot R3. Kernel Pult is fine, but the butter is too rare and suffers from hitbox problems R4. Coffee Bean is fine, but it's prices reduces the effectiveness of Scaredy Shroom and Fume Shroom R5. Umbrella Leaf is fine, but needs more uses R6. Garlic is fine, only because of the Gloom Walk R7. Marigold is Marigold R8. Melon Pult is fine U1. Twin Sunflower doesn't have a good sun cost to sun production ratio, but is ok U2. Gatling Pea is fine U3. Gloom Shroom is Fine U4. Cattail is great U5. Spikerock is fine, but suffers from the hitbox problem U6. Gold Magnet is useless U7. Cob Cannon is weak normally, but good in survival U8. Winter Melon is great U9. Imitater is Imitater
@cloudynguyen6527
2 жыл бұрын
2 points - Threepeaters having extra 25 sun costs is due to the fact that it is 3 Peashooters compacted within 1 space - Same to Twinsunflowers. They are supposed to be costly at first to pay off in long run Other than that, I agree with your points. However, niche plants in PvZ2 does exist. I feel sad to say that Magnet shroom in PvZ1 becomes niche in PvZ2 because of how many zombies it counters. Plants like EMPeach and Gravebuster also only work on few levels.
@terraria_ranger4887
2 жыл бұрын
You think Doom Shroom is fine?
@iangillingham8166
2 жыл бұрын
@@cloudynguyen6527 Threepeater and Twin Sunflower costing more in PVZ 1 is fine. The levels are slower and survival mode let's Twin Sunflower make back the sun you spent on it. It's sun cost to sun production ratio is the worst in the series, costing 200 and only making 50 sun every 30 seconds or so. The real problem is that they carried that into PVZ2, as Twin Sunflower is the only main Sun producer that doesn't make back it's cost in one burst. As for Threepeater, it costing 325 is because it is unlocked in the pool stages, where it would take three Peashooters and one Lily Pad to get the same affect. This was fixed in PVZ2 because it is unlocked in Pirate Seas, so there is no Lily Pad to make it cost more. I never said that PVZ2 doesn't have niche plants, in fact there are too many to name. But PVZ plants and PVZ2 plants are niche for different reasons, most of the time. Cactus is niche in PVZ1 because it counter one zombie and has no use outside that. Magnet-Shroom in both games counter more than one zombie, but PVZ2 has less unique ones. Take away Balloon Zombie and Cactus becomes useless. Take away King Zombie and Magnet-Shroom becomes more niche, but still usable.
@iangillingham8166
2 жыл бұрын
@@terraria_ranger4887 I think it could be nerfed more, like having a longer recharge or costing more. But it isn't too Overpowered. It makes you lose one tile for a long time and it costs more during the day, due to Coffee Bean. Me saying a plant is fine doesn't mean that it is perfect, it just means that it works well enough. Not too Overpowered to the point you can beat 2/5 of the game using only one plant. But also not too weak to the point that the plant is useless if you get rid of one zombie
@terraria_ranger4887
2 жыл бұрын
@@iangillingham8166 thing is, the lost tile doesn't even make a difference, since you're going to be planting it near the right half of the field anyway, plus it actually wears off after a while. It clears out an entire flag wave (save for gargs, which it leaves at about half health anyway), and the requirement of coffee bean on day levels has the silver lining of being able to "save up" Doom Shrooms and set them off in relatively rapid succession. It can fend off a practically infinite wave of zombies in a way that no other single plant (except for a group of cob cannons) can. And in night levels, it only costs 125 sun. That is NOT okay. Even on day levels it's only 200 sun, compared to, for example, Cherry Bomb's 150. The only actual downside of it is that you'll need to sacrifice a seed slot for Coffee Bean if you're using it on a day level. The sun cost isn't even that big a deal, just the seed slot. Edit: tho yeah I agree that puff-shroom is probably the best plant in the situations where it can be used

I'm confused about why uniqueness and not polished are considered a flaw from a prequel compare to a (modded) sequel. I can understand that you feel the game was too easy. The game was never intended to be hardcore. As side note, I remember Umbrella Leaf also counter the zombies that drop from above on the final waves of roof.
