Play is a challenge in therapeutic work because children with autism do not follow the typical development steps of play. They play a game which can often be the use of objects in unusual manner: rotating, aligning, collecting, focusing on parts of objects, or on small objects that they hold in their hands and do not let go
The play is repetitive and not social
Symbolic or intentional pretend play is delayed or not present at all
The play is important: It is not an option, but you have to work with the child
Cognitive, social, affective, physical, emotional development is integrated in the play. It is closely related to language development
When you start playing with the child, you will face rejection, avoidance, but you must not give up. At first it is not very pleasant, it seems like a job with the child. You will help the child play appropriately with toys. You will teach the child how to play
There is no specific curriculum for the play, it varies from one child to another as it depends on his development
We must focus on teaching the child play skills
