I've always said that the PSP was truly ahead of its time! In a pre-smartphone era, the only other major portable multi-media devices at the time were basically iPods and Zune's. For the PSP to be an entire portable gaming console, as well as being able to serve as a MP3 player, movie and video player, web browsing, and even backwards compat with PS1 titles was just amazing at the time.

I remember trying remote play with the PSP and PS3, as well as doing it with the Vita and PS4. The PSP didn't work very well, like you said, and it was more novel then anything. I do remember things being better on the Vita, but I really haven't tried it recently to know how it is now. Honestly, this is one of the things that makes me excited about the Steam Deck, I am going to use that with Chiaki to remote play my PS4 with full controls and no janky back touch pad for L2/R2. I know you could set it elsewhere on the Vita, but using the back touch or touchscreen weren't great options any way it went. I don't have many games on my PS4, but I am looking forward to replaying the Uncharted series and Infamous: Second Son. The other games that I have on PS4, I also have on PC, so that's not a big draw for me otherwise, I just want to play a few exclusives that I don't want to take over the TV to play.

If I had to take a guess why some videos get blocked when you remote play, Sony and the rights holder of the video content might be hitting legal territory of "streaming" instead of a video download purchase. The license to Sony to sell it probabaly had language strictly saying it must be for download and playback, but streaming rights weren't sold with it.

Remote play was one of the factors that got me to pick up a PS3. But so few games ultimately supported it. I guess because of the slow 802.11b WiFi, and that the PSP only has a six button controller and a single analogue nub. The Vita kind of addressed this with its dual analogues, but having the L2/R2 and L3/R3 buttons mapped virtually to the touch pads just never felt right. I'm surprised it took as long as the Switch to get a major handheld with a full 10-button layout.
