Everybody thinks their class had the last "real" plebe summer/plebe year but even with more restrictions they find a way to keep it hard. My dad was '72, I am '01 and my brother is '04. We swapped a lot of stories over the years and it has not changed that much. However no classes after 2005 or so will ever know the suffering of a Plebe summer without air conditioning in Bancroft Hall. You step out of a cold shower and are sweating again by the time you are dressed.

@@myownspiritlevel There's two aspects of "hard" one is the learning/intensity curve which makes USMC bootcamp hard. Then there is that level of hard which only those who are both very fit and have extremely high aptitude can handle -- that's Naval Academy hard. Any of the latter would likely do well in any bootcamp, but Plebe Summer is just the start after which it does NOT necessarily get easier. If I had a choice between doing bootcamp ten times or four years at the Academy, I would choose the Academy but not because it would be the easier of the two. In my experience it wasn't. Btw, while I did only go through bootcamp once, I did graduate as platoon honor man, so my comparison is not entirely hypothetical.

I've become Admiral Rickover in my old age, if I wasn't already... The greatest challenge all prospective US Navy officers will face is dealing with the enormous complexity of the fleet's infrastructure. The fleet is old, real old. Theory and skills to manage and maintain the fleet can be most effectively taught at the Academy and eyes-on during summer cruise. If mids do not learn these skils during summer cruise, its harder for them to learn it on the front-line in the fleet. Also, 98% of leadership skills are learned on the job, in the fleet. Can never teach leadership - or at least it will never be absorbed in a classroom or on a field trip to Tibet. Any attempt (in my day and today) to teach leadership to 18-22 year old kids in a classroom is effectively ineffective. So, its now after graduation and at sea as an Ensign, 26 hours into your day and one of your guys comes to you for signatures on a tagout request for a set of high-voltage electrical circuits' corrective maintenance. LREC "skills" are not applicable. Analytical theory and practical experience is called for - but the officer lost the opportunity to learn these skills when they traded eight weeks on an LCS as a mid for a summer "grand tour" of Tibet. Electrocution, fire and ship out of service ensues. But the officer remains culturally aware? Sheesh!

@@davecorley5514 if you have to ask that you are busted! The Navy hasn't had diesel boats since the late 80s...see USS barbel for an example...I think it was a mistake to not keep one or two as training targets as most of our potential adversaries have either all diesel electric subs or Russia and China having both...

fried rice Bootcamp is for enlisted personnel, it’s 8 weeks long. Naval Academy is for officers and is 4 years long. The academy trains you how to be an officer but also makes you earn your degree.

Boot Camp teaches you how to be a sheep. The academy teaches you how to be a shepherd.
