Yaupon holly 🍵, although coming across verticillata or decidua in full fruit is awesome 🙌✌️

@@austintrousdale2397 Yaupon is awesome - berries plus evergreen foliage in winter, and it makes good tea. Not native where I am at though, not many hollies are, mainly opaca and verticillata.

very awesome, to see such varieties in Holly. i don't have a garden, but i do have a Holly bush that is pretty darn tall!!! all the birds come to it, then have the berries and come to my window feeders. its one thing i loved about my place when i moved in, but i always fear it will get taken down, as a lot of people round here seem to be getting rid of evergreens and hedges so we have less than when i moved in some years ago, but thankfully "my" wonderful Holly has remained, to give me a bit of privacy from the road, and a place for the birds to rest up.

Evergreen holly species are wonderful for blocking the road from view and help to cut down some of the noise also. Hopefully they will leave yours alone!

Ah so looks like glabra (sp) probably isn’t naturally found in my area which is one I was considering (middle TN). Thanks for the informative video. I have some sort of Holly on the side of my house, an evergreen. I’ll Id it one day lol. Plenty of other stuff in the yard consuming my time right now tho

The native holly choices in middle TN and KY are more limited than they are at either end of those states. The soils have a lot to do with it.

All the Ilex glabra available at nurseries seem to be female cultivars. I can’t find a male plant in this species, so I have no berries on my ‘Strongbox’ cultivars. Any leads on finding males?

The only male cultivar I have been able to find is Ilex glabra "Pretty Boy," but no one seems to actually sell it! Your best bet is to find a native plant nursery that has sexed wild type Ilex glabra and use a wild type male. If a nursery has wild Ilex glabra but they are not sold as sexed they can be easily sexed if flowering. Crazy that there are so many Ilex glabra female cultivars being sold with no male cultivar options to pollinate them!

@@BackyardEcology Thanks. I didn't realized I was logged in with my Wild Ones account when I posted my question. And I should have started my post with a big Thank You for the holly video! Your video reminded me of my Ilex glabra issue which is just mind-boggling to me!

@@lrhitt It does seem odd that female cultivars are offered with no male counterpart. I'm not sure what is going on with "Pretty Boy" but I searched for a bit and could never find a nursery actually selling it. Maybe in the spring places will start showing it as in stock. Glad you enjoyed the video!
