Very interesting project. My arch showed a 'continuous footing' which I think is OVER engineered. I wanted to do piers as you have. What area of the country are you located in?

Hi Scott - I think soil conditions are the main factor. I'm in northern Virginia and building mostly on undisturbed clay, so piers with 9" thick footings were more than sufficient for this porch. Frost line here is 24".

Did you pour any concrete under the blocks?

Yes, the piers sit on concrete footers - there's a playlist for the entire process of building the porch. --Cheers

I’m looking to build square concrete piers for my fence posts. Your design is similar to what I would like to build. I wish that the big box stores sold affordable 12”X12” square cardboard concrete forms instead of the round ones. I’ve used the round forms but I don’t like the look especially when I have a square post sitting on a round pier. The square post footings are only about 12” in depth and I would purchase if they were a minimum of 24” in depth. Hopefully someone will sell them or I’ll make a pier similar to yours. Thanks

I made a bunch of square forms for some crawlspace footings a while back - as I recall is was pretty quick to bang them together. Anyway - thanks for your comment and best of luck with your project. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mH6oyIGEm6WdbH4

Why didn't you use solid concrete blocks instead of filling hollows with concrete?
@TheLittleHouse

Never heard of using solid blocks. Filling the cores locks the pier to the footing due to the rebar.

around here the inspector would want the footings abut a foot wider all around..

Would this be doable under a house foundation

Depends on your situation - I did something similar to raise the floors (and eventually the roof) of a concrete-block house. kzitem.info/door/PLZmM3m2-oRTmPQACwRslbnjHbjGIG3sZB

Are the blocks filled with concrete or mortar ?

They are filled with concrete

Rebar absorbs water from concrete, rusts and expands and will eventually crack the cement and the blocks.

So ... what do you suggest using instead?

Use rebar but don’t put it directly in the soil- Fill the blocks with concrete then stick the rebar in and push it down below the surface, but not into the ground
