The side panels are MUCH easier to remove if once you get them out you simply straighten out the end of the top nubbin that goes into the clip on the console. Once that's done it pulls out easily. And you really only need one screw in the back to hold it in. Mine went missing while the car was apart and I didn't bother replacing them. The console side panels have held in place just fine. The default main cable to it has two connectors on it - for two different style connectors on the car. Only one of them is used. The one you ID as a "steering wheel control" is actually what plugs into the harness for a car with a PCM3. Anyway - no damage is done if you snip out the unused connector - it saves some of the precious space behind the unit. What you thought was a flaw in the faceplate/surround is the tab for the plastic cover over the screen that is intended to be removed by the owner when they finish installing the unit. There is no power to it without the key in the ignition. The orange Faraka connector is the GPS antenna connector from the factory PCM. Happily, you can use the original GPS factory antenna you need a male Orange Faraka connector to SMA adaptor cable. Available for about $7 on Amazon, overnight delivery. (www.amazon.com/dp/B07MCL8R3G) The MOST adaptor box (the BLACK box) needs power and input and output. The inputs are the line-level left and right outputs. The output is the orange fiber cable that goes to your Bose amplifier. Besides tapping into the power lead to the unit you could have used the switched power output from the unit - which is why it was there. I believe it's the blue wire labeled "ANT" - it really should be labeled ASSC (Accessory). I'll be attacking that shortly since I''m adding another amplifier for speakers I installed in the storage cubby on my Boxster. I'm curious if you've tried removing it since you clipped it in with the straightened clips - are they easy to push in to unlock the unit from the dash. I know a number of people who've done this, but none have actually tried removing it. I'm trying to get the exact dimensions between the screw holes for the slider clips on the side. It should be easy to create some print-on-demand 3D printer for full-length sliders which would hold it quite securely in the slots in the side of the cage. These units seem to differ in both specifications and the firmware installed at the factory. I've seen at least 3 different firmware packages on the units. In communicating with the factory - the firmware is burned into the motherboard of the unit by the company that makes the board. They claim it can't be updated, but I continue to press them on this. Some of the default software (in particular the phone, radio, and music player) look like they were designed by a color-blind 10-year-old (actually a 10-year-old would probably do a better job) with an obsession with icons rather than text labels. It's certainly possible to have labels on different language versions of software - since they do that on one of the built-in launchers. Most users have migrated to the Agrama launcher - it's flexible and able to be configured. It has a few bugs, but in general, it's quite usable. I have succeeded in getting it to connect wirelessly fairly reliably with Android-Auto features on my Motorola phone. It usually attaches automatically - but the settings I'm using are different from what might think should be used.. there is more on that at: www.planet-9.com/threads/diy-on-installing-an-inexpensive-android-radio-headunit-to-replace-the-standard-cd30-radio-and-probably-the-pcm3.253949/ That's an ongoing DIY on installation, configuration, use-of, and what software is worth having on the unit. If you only want to use it with an iPhone - that seems to work quite nicely.

Small correction - the orange antenna (Faraka) cable is one of the antenna cables. Apparently the 2.(#) PCM used a diversity antenna system built into the radio instead of one with the diversity function in an antenna amplifier. That means the unit that was in the vehicle originally didn't seem to have GPS. GPS Faraka connectors are always blue.

Just installed mine on a 997.1 4S. All works well, but there are a few issues. The RDS radio info is tiny, it only shows the frequency. Have you managed to upgrade the software to a better version? I can't transfer music from the usb stick to the hard drive, again d/t the poor user interface. All my BOSE speakers work, but I can't isolate the rear ones. The quality of phone calls is really bad and when I'm on a call it stops displaying Google Maps.

Try the codes 3368 or 5678 which opens up more settings maybe something in that you can change. I don't really use the radio at all I always just use Amazon music and so on so not really spent any time messing with the radio side sorry. You can load on new software to it I have seen some others that have done that which may improve it I just haven't myself. Those codes should allow you to change more settings and update the UI to a new one.

I think your unit has been out before as there's 4 plastic allen key clip retainers that have to be turned half a turn so you can push the clips down, plus an additional 7mm hex head screw on the passenger side that has to be removed (well, at least unscrewed halfway).

Thanks Jason. The graphics are easy to add you just put whatever image you want on a USB and then add it in the settings as home screen or background it's very easy to do. The built in GPS is on a navigation app and it has a GPS receiver cable and antenna you just need to route it and stick it to the dash. I only use the CarPlay/Android auto part for maps as I like to use the Waze app which is just wireless from your phone with the wireless CarPlay/android auto function the unit has. As for the antennas, I just stuck them all inside the cavity the old unit came out on some of the plastic dash mouldings and they all seem to work still. I routed the mic to the top of my steering column covers just in front of the speedo cluster and the USBs to the glove box.

Hi Jonny, Just a heads up if you're doing it using my video as a guide on the part that I removed the unit from the dash I mention pushing the clips in, apparently my unit was a warranty replacement and had been out before so the clips I pushed in were already free if they don't push in you need to unlock them with the allen key locks you can see t 6:53 in my video beside the clips. Microphone should of been with the unit I would have thought as thats for phone calls, if you didn't get one any generic one should do as its just the small jack type and as long as your unit has the female part you should just manage to plug it straight in. The long antenna bar thing is the Wifi antenna.

Awesome, super helpful video mate! I'd be thankful if you could help me out with the following: Just installed the unit on my sound package Boxster, however, the big speakers in the doors aren't working. The manufacturer sent me forum posts in which people connect the green wire to the black/red ones. However, I don't understand how that would help as I had nowhere to plug the fiber optic plug into (as i had no module). I guess i need the module also? After getting the optic module the questions are: - Is there a way to connect the power supply on the unit side? - Is a replacement of the Amp for a Sony Amp a better idea as it would eliminate the need for the optic box if I understood your comment correctly? Thank you in advance!

If you have the orange wires you need the module. You can do away with it if you just change the Amp for a Sony Xplod or similar as you then don't need fibre optic for the amp at all then, but you would need to run a wire for Amp on 12v from the back of the new head unit.

@@filipmitf Check you have the AV jack type cables correct. From head unit you should have the two Aux jacks, one red, one white they go to the R IN Red and the L IN white that plugs into the mini harness for the optical box. Obviously just match the colours red to red, white to white. Failing that you will need to test the outputs at the Amp itself to see if the Amp is working. @@leecolton8380 No sorry its a 12v out from the head unit to the amp which tells the amp to remotely switch on when the head unit is on. All amps have inputs for a permanent 12v+ connection, Earth/GND, and finally the REM/12V+ headhunt signal which is the instruction from the head unit to remote on the amp. Without the remote (REM) on 12v from the head unit it won't turn on the amp. Its worth checking your amp with a multimeter that it has a 12v+ and Earth then when the head unit turns on you also have a remote (REM) 12v on appearing, if not you will likely need to wire that blue wire (may be blue and white) that has the remote on sticker on it coming out the back of the head unit.

While they try to help out people by identifying what unit they have - if you have Bose you absolutely need the box. If you have Sound Plus - you may, or may not need the box - the only way to tell is to pull the unit out of the console and look for the orange fibers. Orange fibers = need box. If you have the basic audio (actually rather rare) no box is needed. The Sound plus sometimes used the fibers, sometimes it simply sent the signal from the speaker connections to the amplifier under the passenger's seat (in the US.)
