What an awesome experience! A week ago I pulled the trigger and decided to fly out to Dr. Zaghi to have my tongue tie released. I reached out about 6 weeks ago and had to wait about 2 weeks to do a Zoom consult with Dr. Zaghi. I had sent him a detailed description of my health history and that my major concern was that after watching his 5 DIMENSIONS OF A TONGUE TIE seminar he did on KZitem, I could make the distinction that I couldn't dissociate the floor of my mouth from my tongue.
This is a compensation if you can't separate the two, and oftentimes it creates dysfunctional patterns because the tongue can do the work it's supposed to on its own. I had been doing myofunctional therapy for about 5 months at that point, but still couldn't make the LPS/CAVES movement with my tongue and knew from owning a gym for the last 13 years that something wasn't being addressed.
On the Zoom consult he stated that he would like for me to try to work with one of his therapists online for 1 month, and then what I could do is fly out at that time and he could take a look in person and if it made sense that I could do the procedure right there. He said I wasn't an extreme case where it was like if you have this removed your life will probably change overnight for the better, but he said there was definitely compensation as a result of my tongue not being long enough.
So I started working with Lesley the following week and it was pretty crazy. I had working w Pat my therapist for 5 months in AZ and thought I had done a 100 or so exercises, what that hell would be so different with this therapist. The crazy thing is we didn't do one of the same exercises for the first 4 weeks. They just had a different approach as it related to the exercises I did to start to prepare for the tongue tie which had a lot to do with relaxing the muscles of the face and many exercises where I couldn't move any face muscles, but was moving my tongue. This ability to dissociate the tongue from the floor of the mouth would allow my mandible to no longer go everywhere my tongue went which would be huge in letting my muscles of my face relax some and allow for my oral posture to get cleaned up.
The day I flew out there felt surreal. I woke up and was excited but also didn't know if it would be really painful for a few days and hard to talk or no big deal. It's not too often you get on a plane to go get surgery somewhere by yourself and then hop back on a plane later that day to come home. I remember I flew out at 8 my time and got in to LA at 8:50. My appointment was for 10:40 and I had always heard nightmarish stories about LA traffic, so I was like am I going to make it even though it was only 15 miles away from LAX. I ended up getting there about 30 mins early and met a mother and son from North Carolina who had flow all that way to get his tongue tie removed as well.
The nurse finally took me back and had me sit and do a 3DCTSCAN and then Dr. Zaghi came over and talked about what he saw image wise for my airway in the back, my tongue, and my intermolar width and then we went into one of the rooms and he evaluated things. He determined that I had a posterior tie that I would benefit from getting snipped and when I gave him the thumbs up we proceeded right then and there to start the procedure. It took roughly 10 minutes start to finish once I said lets do it.
He spent a minute or two targeting the area with Lidocaine, and then pulled out the lazer and went to work. Once he created the opening he was able to just touch the edges of the opening to keep getting it to expand to where he felt comfortable sewing me up. He said that my tongue was about 1cm longer and showed me the pre/post improvement in tongue mobility which was pretty crazy. Talked for a few minutes after and I was on my way.
My myofunctional therpaist Lesley had recommended I go see a craniosacral therapist she liked to work with on my way back to the airport and so I was able to fit that in to help with the healing. Most people don't think of their head/face like the top of a puppet controlling the entire body underneath, and that much of how we move as humans comes from up top. She worked on me for about 75 mins and then I hopped in an Uber and was back in AZ by 6:30.
I was starving from not really eating all day and I had some bone broth and some ground beef and beans and was off to sleep. As I write this now I'm 8 days out from the procedure and it's crazy since the first night I have dreamed every single night. Some nights I remember upon waking, but the fact that I know I dreamed and it's every night is definitely a change for me. I did a 3 virtual check up for the procedure with my myofunctional therapists and then I have a 2 week zoom follow up next week with one of Dr. Zaghi's nurses and a 2 month Zoom followup w Dr. Z himself!
What a great experience. I just want to thank Dr. Zaghi and his staff for all that they do🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
