I’ve got another great question from my Patreon Pottery Club, this one comes from member Philippa.
Phillippa asked:
‘Hi Kara, I just wondered if there's a tip for not ending up with weight around the bottom? to clarify Phillippa means weight around the bottom of your pot!’ Ha ha!
Thank you so much for your question, Phillippa.
This is such a common problem encountered by most new potters. Even potters who have been doing this a while still struggle with this sometimes. Lots of folks seem to be great at getting nice even thin walls up here but really struggle down at the shoulder area. In my lessons here in my studio I notice a lot of students kinda skip over this area.
Maybe it’s because it’s hard. Or maybe because you have to exert a little more force which can feel scary, as you’re not sure how much force you need. Maybe because we need to change direction slightly as we push the clay in from off the horizontal wheel head into the vertical walls.
This basic issue is getting the clay from here - where you don’t want it - to up into the walls here - where you do want it. You might say ‘but Kara, can’t I just cut this part off when I’m done throwing or even during the trimming stages’ Yes, yes you can do that but that’s not very efficient. And might mean you’re not in control of the clay the clay is in control of you.
In order to throw taller and bigger shapes you need to be able to get that clay where you want it to be. Not to mention, you’re gonna end up with more reclaim and you’ll also get through your clay quicker.
In this video I share some tips to help you avoid a chunky shoulder on your pot.
