Where we are we have three or four numbers, the first one or two depending what base (station/department) since most departments out here only have one station, is the department/station/base, the second or third is the apparatus type and the final one is the number of that apparatus. 107-1 would be the first ambulance

@WestPlainsFD wanted to make this public knowledge.. departments which only have paid on call or non-live-in volunteers,it is generally the first whom gets there rolls out,on a minor call the ones that get late just go home,on bigger stuff(say a 2nd alarm is put out later) then the rest meet on scene.

i sure wish we here could have sirens on our POV's we cant. some do tho illegally, i had a structure fire yest and had to come from across the county on a mostly 2 lane during 530pm traffic and very few moved to the side for my Emergency light and even flashing headlights. yet if i had a siren more ppl would notice u coming and move over. some are so oblivious. good driving and safe response.

i have to agree. i am allowed blue lights and air horn but no siren ive seen the difference between responding with lights and sirens and just lights. it would be nice if my state allowed us sirens. we only recently were allowed to have air horns. i do have to say im thankful for emergency vehicles that do have sirens and are willing to assist me while responding when civilians fail to yield even knowing that there is a law stating the must yield to us

My state bans any vehicle from breaking any traffic rules even when the vehicle is equipped with lights and sirens. If a person is going to equip their POV with lights and sirens and is going to break traffic laws on the way to an incident, then that person better be damned sure their insurance company is okay with that. If they're not and the person causes an accident they will be without coverage.

Robb Hodges if your lenses are clear, shouldn't have a problem. Most say just don't use them and you won't have a problem (official identification, markings or license plates help). Never had a problem just having them (I don't even know where to get a cover for them anyways, one of those 'out of service' covers)

Many years ago in Johnson County Ks, I would go down to visit an uncle from my home state of MN and I swear to you that the vols. had entire length red/white full lightbars on their personal cars, pickups, and vans complete w/sirens. I found it so strange to see an old ford pu or a chevy malibu with all these very expensive and authentic bars/sirens on them. A simple trash fire with all the vollies and then the Shawnee-Mission real fire trucks with all their sirens and horns would make the most mundane fire sound as if an entire neighborhood or a fire of epic conditions were happening when actually it wasn't. I'm sure this practice isn't allowed anymore after all these years, but it sure made a new meaning to a structure or vandalism fire! I'm sure liability ins. forced them to quit this practice. In fact I can remember a chevy malibu with the golden KS personalized plates which read "not a cop" all the while having a Federal Aerodyne lightbar with all the fixins! I do believe that vol's should be able to have some sort of emergency lighting/w/training to get them to the fire or firehouse much quicker, it only makes sense!

@gchsbus kansas you are only allowed 10 over the speed limit and that is only away from built up congested areas. school zone you better be doing the speed limit. you have to consider that states have different requirements for their responders in pov. speeding will not get to you the scene in a safe manner if you cause accidents or loose control of your vehicle. speed is determined for the road conditions, and congestibility and not because of the incident.
