Program Notes:
I love the rain, and I will never tire of writing music about it. The text and music for this piece, however, were conceived during a particularly horrible summer of wildfires in California. It is, on the surface, a description of the beauty and comfort of experiencing a thunderstorm inside one’s own home, but it is also a very real prayer for rain for my home state, which has been in perpetual drought for much of my life.
Grant us petrichor in soft light.
The promise of stolen electrons
fills the air.
Grant us sheets and sheets,
comforters,
hazy, humid sounds.
Press and pull
down from grey-white skyscrapers,
up from gravel ground.
Grant us the flash of counting breaths
through curtained windows
or eyelids
pinpricked by stratospheric chill.
Grant us rain.
Grant us life.
Grant us peace.
