@@andreiandrofski9426 It does not really make sense militarily, but his character arc is more of the squire! He represents all the ground crew, the ones who make or break the pilots chances of success but never get any of the Glory. It's a bit representative of Erich Hartmann and his Crew Chief Heinz "Bimmel" Mertens which on one of the occasions that Hartmann had to force land his aircraft actually grabbed a Rifle and went AWOL to find him. On the Eastern Front! Man is a legit Bad Arse Motherfucker that next to no one knows about. I think Hondo's Character was a nod to all the ground crew, which were in germany called "The Black Men" (Die Schwarzen Männer or Die Schwarzen Männer vom Bodenpersonal) both due to their dark, often stained coveralls and the fact that most of them always got overlooked. A lot of the famous aces of WW2, including Hartmann had a good relationship with their Crews, especially the Crew Chiefs and trusted them implicitly. For example no one got to touch Hartmann's Aircraft without Merten's prior approval. Hondo gives a face to them all, and he's being so to speak, the squire to Tom Cruise's Knight. Both could not do their deeds without each other.

@@randylclark4665 I think that Top Gun Maverick encapsulates how much Cruise mature over 30 years of acting. Personally, I think Cruise is a way better actor than he's been given credit for so I thought his acting in this movie was just a cakewalk for him. He's delivered legit Oscar-caliber performances in stuff like Collateral, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Born on the 4th of July, and Interview with a Vampire. I've seen way less win awards than Cruise accomplished in those movies. I'd even throw in the first Mission Impossible from the mid-90s. I felt like the first MI was carried by really stellar acting while the sequels focused a lot more on action and stunts.

@@galveston You do it to. When you have to fire someone, for example. You turn off your emotions. It's business. The military does it the same way, we're just less "pussyfoot" about it. Debreifings aren't what most people think they are. It's a time when you review everything that happened during a mission, and identify a problem, and the "root cause" of the problem MUST always be an internal issue. So you have to look across the table at your best friend, who you're probably going to go to their house this weekend and hug them, hug their spouse, and pick up their toddler as their "uncle", but you have to look across the table and say "This problem happened because of Sergeant X. They were the root cause due to their incompetency and it's their fault." And that person looks back at you and accepts responsibility. The emotions are turned off. Same way when you have to take negative administrative action against a friend. Or issue an order to someone you know they're going to hate, but they just say back "yes sir". The emotion is turned off. Nobody has time for emotion. The mission always comes first. Doesn't matter if you just kissed the forehead of the son two weeks ago, promising you'd get their dad home safe... if they're to be the first person through the door of that house, you give the order without any hesitation. Mission first. Nation Second. God sometimes. Emotion never. You just turn it off at work. You can feel later. People die if you're emotional during a mission. I thought Hangman was flying an F-35 in that final scene. It's been speculated that Mav and Rooster were on the ground for some time before stealing the F-14, so they may have thought the mission was over and gotten everyone out of their planes, only for Rooster to activate his tracker. At that moment, Cyclone probably told Hangman to get into an F-35 and launch in case the two needed backup. As for why no other planes were launched, I'm pretty sure someone else in this comment section has mentioned it, but it takes a lot to get one of those planes in the air, so you don't want to send more than you need, and Maverick is a very capable pilot, as we clearly saw. Cyclone knew only Maverick was crazy enough to try and steal an enemy F-14, so when a member of his crew described the incoming plane, he knew instantly it was Maverick and figured he didn't need to send more than one plane.

That's because that is the trope. A character indicates that they will see another character later and then one of them dies. It happens in A New Hope, Age of Ultron, The Force Awakens, Endgame, and several others, and a version of it occurs in movies like Iron Man (2008) and the original Mission Impossible. Maverick was one of the few movies to not do this, and I like that because not only does it allow some really awesome characters to stay alive, but it keeps these kinds of deaths in other movies unpredictable, which makes them so much more powerful when we first witness them.

Why was Rooster his wingman if Phoenix and Bob were the one's flying with him for?
@BossyGuyMike
Жыл бұрын
Bit of a weird formation......The purpose of the two-team assist is that while Phoenix flies the plane Bob focuses completely on lazing the target for Maverick as the bombs use the lazer-eye to achieve pinpoint accuracy - though worst case scenario [as seen with Rooster] is that the gunner has to take the shot "from the hip" based solely on his targeting system. What Rooster did there isn't impossible per se, but IRL it would take an enormous amount of skill and luck. It's not something you want to leave to chance ala Maverick's test run [which, given the mission parameters, trying to both fly solo and laze the target would be if not impossible than so improbable as to be effectively impossible] which is why the gunner relies on the second plane/lazer-eye. There's an official term for what they did but I can't think of it immediately. Any Naval Aviators, please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I don't think the plane can actually carry both the bombs and the lazer-eye. But I'm not sure on that.

Because with F-35s, you wouldn't have a dramatic scene of a suicide mission. You'd just have an air-to-ground strike from high altitude. And thus, you wouldn't have a movie. Also, with F-18 two-seaters, you can have Mav appear to be flying the jet when in reality, an actual F-18 pilot is flying it. F-35s are single seaters. As for the reason given in the movie - that anti-jamming capabilities would nullify the F-35, the F-35 also has the ability employ laser-guided munitions, like the F-18.
